Nintendo Switch 2's 3.5 million opening weekend sales smashes brand's console record — beats Switch 1's opening month by almost a million in four days

Nintendo has announced that the company's new Nintendo Switch 2 has soundly beaten its console sales record, selling 3.5 million units worldwide in just four days since its release on June 5, the company announced on Wednesday. By way of comparison, that's 760,000 more units than the original Switch sold in its first month, March 2017. "This is the highest global sales level for any Nintendo hardware within the first four days," the company announced. It means the company is more than one-fifth of the way towards its stated goal of selling 15 million units by the end of its next financial year, March 2026. Despite a few horror stories, the launch generally seems to have gone smoothly. GameStop customers at a store in New York were horrified to find the staples used to attach receipts to the front of the console's box had actually punctured the screen, with all of the affected customers given replacements. Across the pond, UK customers at a multitude of retailers noted their units arrived unsealed, with the tape used to secure the box closed appearing to have been broken, possibly due to a flaw in the tape which was too weak for purpose. At the cost of some battery life, the Switch 2 boasts several improvements over its predecessor, with new Joy-Con 2 controllers featuring optical sensors that mean you can use the controllers like a mouse for aiming and scrolling. The screen is a larger 7.9-inch offering with 1080p and a 120Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, official Nintendo Switch 2 specs reveal eight ARM Cortex A78C cores featuring the ARMv8 64-bit instruction set, and a custom Nvidia Ampere GPU. The console also features 12GB of LPDDR5X memory and 256GB of internal storage, upgradeable to up to 2TB thanks to its microSD Express card slot. Turns out that slot also paves the way for a novel DIY hack, support for M2 NVMe SSDs, at least theoretically speaking. Despite the early success, if you were wondering where to buy the Nintendo Switch 2, it remains in stock at a couple of retailers, notably GameStop and Best Buy, as well as plenty of retailers in the UK. The Nintendo Switch 2 is in stock now - where shoppers can buy before it's too late
The Nintendo Switch 2 will be released on June 5, and it has been sold out at many retailers for weeks The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to hit UK shelves on June 5, offering a glimmer of hope for gamers who have been struggling with recent stock shortages. The Nintendo Switch 2 is currently available in many locations, although it can be somewhat elusive. Stock has been gradually arriving at retailers, who are easing purchase restrictions. Even Nintendo, which has been extending invites to its most loyal customers, now permits anyone with a Nintendo account to log in and purchase one. This is ideal for those who have been waiting for the best place to buy the device. Retailers such as Amazon, Very, and Currys have added it to their inventory, alongside the brand's own site. We've got all the details Nintendo enthusiasts need to know about the device. It does vary depending on the retailer, reports the Mirror. For example, Currys is offering it as part of its bundles. Below, we've compiled everything we know so far about the console and where it can be purchased. What do we know about the Nintendo Switch 2 just weeks before its release? The console will launch on June 5 2025, and we have finally discovered its technical specifications. According to Eurogamer, the Switch 2 will boast a larger and more powerful CPU and GPU architecture, including an Ampere GPU, an ARM Cortex A78C CPU with clock speeds of 1101MHz when docked, and 12GB of LPDDR5X memory. All these factors suggest a much more proficient console capable of running contemporary games without fretting over frame rates or resolution. This should also pave the way for more third-party ports being launched on the console in the future, with more announcements expected in the coming weeks. Nintendo also revealed during the Direct that the device would feature a 1080p 120Hz 7.9-inch LCD screen, the ability to output 4K, and the ability to transform the Joy-Cons into mice. However, its hefty price tag is impossible to overlook. The most significant drawback to the new console is undoubtedly its cost. At nearly £400, it's a pricey investment for most gamers considering it solely for running newer games and an enhanced screen. Meanwhile, if shoppers want some alternatives, shoppers can grab the older Switch from Amazon for £233. Or for Playstation fans, the PS5 Pro from Argos for £699. Where can shoppers purchase the Nintendo Switch 2 console now? Nintendo is the best option for gamers eager to get their hands on the Nintendo Switch 2 console immediately. They can secure one here for £394.99 or £429.99 directly from Nintendo. Bear in mind that it's limited to one per account, so if shoppers order and cancel or desire another, they won't be able to purchase one. However, at the time of writing, it's the best place to buy it. The silver lining is that other third-party websites also have the console in stock. Very has the console in stock at the time of writing - however, it has been dropping in and out of stock. Retailers like Amazon and Currys are also worth considering as they still have bundles available for purchase.

Nintendo Switch 2 specs revealed: What's powering the next gen gaming handheld?
Last month, Nintendo announced the Switch 2, its newest handheld gaming console. Set to hit shelves on June 5 this year, the upcoming console packs in a much more powerful chipset, has a bigger screen and an extra USB-C port. Recently, Nintendo unveiled the technical specifications for the Switch 2, but the official details are a bit vague. However, a new report by Eurogamer gives us a deeper look into what's powering Nintendo's new console. According to the Switch 2's official page, the upcoming console is said to be powered by a 'custom processor made by NVIDIA', but the publication suggests that Nintendo is going with an octa-core ARM Cortex A78C that has a max clock speed of 1.7GHz. Two of the eight cores are reserved for the system, which means developers will have access to only six cores. As for the GPU, Nintendo seems to be using an Nvidia GPU based on the Maxwell architecture, which powers the RTX 30 series cards. Like the CPU, some of the GPU resources are also reserved by the system. Nintendo has already confirmed Switch 2 also supports hardware backed ray tracing as well as DLSS, Nvidia's AI powered upscaling algorithm. On the memory front, the handheld sports 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of storage. All of this is powered by a 5,220mAh battery which the company says will last up to 6.5 hours. To give you a quick recap, Nintendo revealed last month that the Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch LCD screen with 120Hz refresh rate and HDR support and comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSD card slot that lets you expand the storage up to 2TB. The Nintendo Switch 2 is priced at $449.99 and comes with grip and straps for the new controller, a high speed HDMI cable, charging adapter and a USB-C cable.

Full Nintendo Switch 2 specs detailed in new report – here's what you need to know
The SoC is reportedly extensively customized, in contrast to the more stock Nvidia Tegra X1 found in the original Nintendo Switch. Digital Foundry claims it features an eight-core ARM Cortex A78C CPU, with a clock speed of 998MHz while docked or 1101MHz in handheld mode. It's also capable of a max 1.7GHz clock speed, though it's unclear whether this would be reached in use. The fact that the CPU seemingly runs at a higher clock speed in handheld mode is also quite unusual. Traditionally, CPU performance is throttled in mobile systems when they're running off battery power, in order to reduce power consumption. Digital Foundry speculates that it may be designed to make up for the memory bandwidth, which drops from a docked 102GB/s to just 68GB/s in handheld mode. Two of the CPU cores are reportedly reserved for system features, with six available for developers to use. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. The GPU then features Nvidia's Ampere microarchitecture, which is also used in RTX 30 Series cards. The microarchitecture just turned four years old today, so is slightly older than the 2014 Nvidia Maxwell architecture used in the Tegra X1 was when the original Switch released in 2017. The GPU offers 1,546 CUDE cores, a massive increase on the 256 of the Tegra X1. Its clock speed is also boosted, at 1,007Mhz docked or 516MHz in handheld mode, with a maximum speed of 1.4GHz. Throw in the confirmed Nvidia DLSS support, and this SoC should be able to deliver a significant increase in graphical power. In terms of RAM, the console has 12GB of LDPPDR5X memory in the form of two 6GB modules. 3GB is reserved for the system, while 9GB is available for developers. Digital Foundry also states that there is no support for VRR over HDMI, which is a little weird given that it is supported by the system's built-in 7.9 inch, 120Hz and 1080p screen. The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch globally on June 5, 2025. UK pre-orders and US pre-orders are now live, with the console coming in at $449.99 / £395.99 or $499.99 / £429.99 for a bundle that includes a digital copy of Mario Kart World . You might also like…
