APi Group (NYSE:APG) shareholder returns have been strong, earning 252% in 5 years

When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. One great example is APi Group Corporation (NYSE:APG) which saw its share price drive 252% higher over five years. In the last week the share price is up 7.4%. On the back of a solid 7-day performance, let's check what role the company's fundamentals have played in driving long term shareholder returns. View our latest analysis for APi Group While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement. APi Group became profitable within the last five years. On the other hand, it reported a trailing twelve months loss, suggesting it isn't reliably profitable. So it might be better to look at other metrics to try to understand the share price. In contrast revenue growth of 17% per year is probably viewed as evidence that APi Group is growing, a real positive. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth. The graphic below depicts how earnings and revenue have changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image). This free interactive report on APi Group's balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further. APi Group shareholders are up 17% for the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 29% a year, over half a decade) look better. Maybe the share price is just taking a breather while the business executes on its growth strategy. You might want to assess this data-rich visualization of its earnings, revenue and cash flow. Of course APi Group may not be the best stock to buy. So you may wish to see this free collection of growth stocks.
