Leaders' Breakfast in Malabo: Africa discusses its economic integration and regional mobility
Yara Sameh The African continent turns its attention to Equatorial Guinea. On Sunday, July 13, under the patronage of H.E. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, the Malabo Leaders' Breakfast will be held, a high-level meeting also organised by the Africa Prosperity Network (APN) and Invest Equatorial Guinea, in collaboration with the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The event, which precedes the 7th African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, will bring together Heads of State, AU Commissioners, leaders of the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), global financial leaders, and strategic stakeholders from the continent, with a common goal: to break down the barriers that impede the free movement of people, goods, and services in Africa. A clear agenda: connecting Africa from Africa The main theme of the breakfast will be "Financing and facilitating the movement of people, goods, and services in Africa," seeking to generate real proposals to accelerate continental integration. Under the theme "Financing and Facilitating the Movement of People, Goods, and Services Across Africa," the event will address the challenges that still hinder continental integration, such as insufficient cross-border infrastructure and regulatory restrictions affecting the mobility of people and goods. "Malabo takes us from diagnosis to practice. We will translate commitments into concrete financing and implementation of policies for free movement, starting with the Dollar a Day Fund," said Sidig El Toum, executive director of APN. A simple idea, a continental impact One of the key highlights will be the launch of the Integrated Infrastructure Growth Fund for Africa, an initiative championed by H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma during the Africa Prosperity Dialogues 2025, whose leadership of the AU Commission launched Agenda 2063. The proposal invites the African middle class to contribute as little as $1 a day, with the goal of generating more than $20 billion annually to finance roads, digital networks, airports, bridges, and other strategic projects that connect people and markets. ASEAN Law Forum 2025 this August set to enhance regional cooperation
BANGI: Malaysia will host the ASEAN Law Forum 2025 from Aug 19 to 21 as part of its ASEAN Chairmanship this year, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. She said the forum is one of several important meetings and conferences involving the legal sector at the ASEAN level. 'The forum provides ASEAN member states an opportunity to coordinate efforts in building strong and resilient legal institutions and mechanisms, especially in navigating today's uncertain global economic challenges. 'As Chair, Malaysia will take the lead in shaping effective strategies to advance international commercial arbitration and mediation, to position ASEAN as a preferred hub for alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and strengthening cross-border insolvency mechanisms,' she said. She was speaking at the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) monthly assembly and the rebranding of the Judicial and Legal Training Institute (ILKAP) as the National Legal Academy (APN) here today. Azalina said countries she had recently visited, including Japan, Uzbekistan and several ASEAN dialogue partners, have shown interest and enthusiasm in participating in the upcoming forum. She also said that the pursuit of justice must not be rushed, as it demands diligence and fairness in its process. 'Although the government has increased the number of courts and appointed more officers, including Chief Registrars, the existing system still faces constraints in terms of time and resources. 'The road to justice is a long process, but with ADR platforms, we can offer more accessible and practical interpretation of justice,' she said. Meanwhile, Azalina said the Cabinet had agreed to the rebranding of APN on April 9, reflecting the establishment of two separate training institutions in the judiciary and legal fields, namely the Malaysian Judicial Academy (AKM) and APN, each with distinct functions. In line with the MADANI Government's legal and institutional reform agenda, Azalina said the APN plays a crucial role in training government officers on existing and newly amended laws to ensure effective implementation. 'Ensuring national laws remain relevant is not an easy task, given the range of issues that must be considered and the extensive research required, especially with the rapid advancement of AI-based technologies. 'Therefore, once a law is passed, it must be promoted and implemented without delay, and more importantly, officers in the legal institutions must be equipped with the necessary skills to enforce it,' she said.

Previously known as ILKAP, the Academy has been renamed and restructured to support institutional reform and promote legal literacy across all government agencies. 'New laws must come with understanding. That's why APN will lead legal training and capacity-building efforts,' said Azalina. One of the Academy's key priorities moving forward is the promotion of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), which offers more affordable and accessible avenues for resolving conflicts outside of traditional courts. 'Justice should be affordable and accessible — not every case needs to end up in court,' she said. 'ADR can ease the burden on the judiciary and provide fair solutions, especially for community and family-related disputes.' Azalina acknowledged that while the government could appoint more judges and establish more courts, the legal process still demands time and careful handling. 'You cannot rush justice. But with ADR — through mediation and arbitration — we can deliver justice that is quicker and easier to access.' She also outlined plans for collaboration with international organizations such as the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the strengthening of local mediation institutions like Pusat Mediasi Madani. 'Access to justice means giving Malaysians fair platforms to assert their rights — not just in courtrooms,' she said. Looking ahead, Azalina expressed hope that significant reforms led by the Legal Affairs, Institutional Reform and Policy Development Division will be implemented before the upcoming 16th General Election, with the aim of ensuring greater legal protection for the public.

NTT Achieves World's First Real-Time, International Co-Production Using IOWN All-Photonics Network
TOKYO & OSAKA, Japan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 27, 2025-- At Expo 2025, NTT Corporation (NTT) debuted 'CHO KABUKI Powered by IOWN,' a theater performance synchronizing live and virtual performers in Osaka, Japan and Taipei City, Taiwan using the NTT Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) All-Photonics Network (APN). The performances occurred on May 24 and May 25 utilizing the world's first International IOWN APN, activated by NTT and Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. (Chunghwa Telecom) in August 2024. 'CHO KABUKI Powered by IOWN' tells the story of Princess Miku (performed by Hatsune Miku) and Tadanobu (performed by Shidō Nakamura), who battle the Azure Dragon while traveling through the legendary Thousand Cherry Blossoms that span from the Age of Gods to the present day. Through the IOWN APN, the movements of performers in Taiwan were transmitted in real time to Japan, where they were synchronized with performers at the Osaka Expo site to create a unified production—as if the distant performers were sharing the same stage in-person. In addition, the performance enabled audience participation through the detection of penlights using cross-modal search technology. By analyzing and quantifying the swing of audience members' penlights in real-time, the performance integrated spectators into the efforts to save Princess Miku. Prior to the performances, NTT utilized its digital twin technology (AnotherMe®), AI and its proprietary cross-lingual speech synthesis technology to create a virtual copy of Kabuki actor Shidō Nakamura. This multilingual 'Shidō Twin,' capable of speaking in languages including Japanese, English and Chinese, guided visitors to the venue and provided an overview of how to use designated earphones to enjoy the Kabuki performance.
