Lil Wayne's ‘Tha Carter VI' First Week Sales Projections Paint A Telling Picture

Lil Wayne's long-anticipated studio album Tha Carter VI made a solid, though not spectacular, commercial impact in its first week of release. The album is projected to open with 110,000 album-equivalent units sold, according to Hits Daily Double, placing it at No. 2 on the Billboard 200—just behind country music juggernaut Morgan Wallen's chart-topping album I'm the Problem. Of those 110,000 units, 35,000 were physical copies, demonstrating continued fan interest in tangible editions of Weezy's music. Despite this respectable debut, Tha Carter VI marks a decline in first-week sales compared to Wayne's previous efforts. His 2020 release Funeral debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 139,000 units. Even more notably, Tha Carter V sold a massive 480,000 units in its debut week back in 2018, underscoring a noticeable slide in first-week performance over the years. While some fans celebrated the return of the iconic Carter series, others were less enthused. Critics and longtime listeners alike have voiced disappointment over the project's consistency and innovation. At the 2025 BET Awards, Lil Wayne delivered a fiery performance, reigniting nostalgia with his classic single 'A Milli' and his more recent cut, 'Welcome to the Carter.' The performance reminded audiences of the lyrical powerhouse he once was, even as Tha Carter VI sparked mixed reactions. While loyal fans welcomed the album as a continuation of a legendary legacy, many deemed it a lackluster effort from an artist once considered untouchable in Hip-Hop. In short, Tha Carter VI achieved solid first-week numbers, but its muted reception and declining sales reflect the evolving landscape of Wayne's career—and the high expectations that still surround his name. Lil Wayne Brings ‘Tha Carter' Album Series Full-Circle With ‘A Milli' Performance at 2025 BET Awards

Lil Wayne was in the house at Monday night's (June 9) 2025 BET Awards, with the rap icon taking the stage to perform both a new song and a classic track on the heels of the release of his new album Tha Carter VI. Weezy's performance came a little over an hour into the show, with the star making a dramatic entrance as a gospel choir in red robes sang and fog clouded the Peacock Theater stage in Los Angeles. As the audience greeted him with raucous applause, Wayne fittingly opened with 'Welcome to Tha Carter,' which is the second track from his latest LP. 'Respect, I don't demand, I deserve, my standards superb/ Family first, family second, family third.' Tunechi then rolled seamlessly into his next selection for the night, giving fans a blast from the past by dusting off his 2008 hit 'A Milli.' As he recited the iconic bars with a big smile on his face, fans in the crowd rapped along to the lines 'A million here, a million there.' Peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, 'A Milli' was one of several hits on Wayne's critically acclaimed Billboard 200-topper Tha Carter III, aka the third installment in his yearslong Tha Carter album series. The rapper recently added to the series with the long-awaited June 6 release of Tha Carter VI, a sprawling 19-track effort featuring collaborations with Wyclef Jean, BigXthaPlug, Jelly Roll, MGK and more co-stars. The same day he dropped Tha Carter VI, Wayne kicked off his tour in support of the album with a performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Weezy is up for a few prizes at the 25th-anniversary BET Awards — hosted this year by Kevin Hart — including best male hip hop artist against BigXthaPlug, Bossman DLow, Burna Boy, Drake, Future, Kendrick Lamar, Key Glock and Tyler, The Creator. Wayne is also nominated twice in the best collaboration category, with both his work on Bless with Wheezy and Young Thug and 'Sticky' with Tyler, GloRilla and Sexyy Red picking up nods. Jamie Foxx Honored by Stevie Wonder & Reflects on Health Scare at BET Awards: ‘You Can't Go Through Something Like That & Not Testify'

Stevie Wonder surprised everyone at the 2025 BET Awards when he stepped out to honor his longtime friend Jamie Foxx. During the 2025 BET Awards on Monday (June 9), Jamie Foxx was set to be honored with the Ultimate Icon Award. Throughout the night, it was teased that a 'special guest' would appear onstage to give Foxx his award. That guest was none other than Stevie Wonder. Foxx famously portrayed Charles in the 2004 film Ray, for which he won the best actor Oscar. Jennifer Hudson then took the helm and bodied a soulful cover of 'Gold Digger,' a 10-week Hot 100 No. 1 for Ye (formerly Kanye West) and Foxx back in 2005. T-Pain and Doug E. Fresh then popped out to close out the celebration with a rockin' cover of the 2009 No. 2 Hot 100 hit 'Blame It.' Through it all, Foxx could be seen laughing, nodding along and having a great time. 'Jamie, look at me!' Stevie joked at the end of the show before inviting Jamie to speak. 'I remember seeing you the first time at a club, playing piano and singing, but I knew from the moment I heard you sing that you had so much more. I admire and celebrate your talent and your love — for blind people. I'm very happy to be here tonight to see you honored as you so very well deserve.' During his acceptance speech, Foxx thanked all his friends and loved ones for showing up for him while he went through life-threatening medical complications back in 2023. He added that when he saw the 'In Memorium' segment, it made him reflect on his own health scare. 'You can't go through something like that and not testify,' Foxx concluded to a roar of applause. 'A career that I could only thank God for.' Lil Wayne Wows the BET Awards With ‘A Milli' Performance

Tha Carter VI season is in full effect, as attendees of the BET Awards learned during Lil Wayne's performance at 'Culture's Biggest Night.' Wayne, who just dropped his Tha Carter VI album, invigorated the crowd with his rendition of 'A Milli,' preceded by his new track 'Welcome to The Carter.' Wayne was backed by a choir in in red Young Money robes who kicked off the gospel-esque hook of 'Welcome to Tha Carter,' the second song on Tha Carter VI. The smoke-shrouded stage then went lava red with frentic lights as Wayne broke into his Tha Carter III hit 'A Milli.' The audience could be heard thunderously rapping along. Teyana Taylor Makes the BET Awards Her ‘Escape Room' in Fiery Performance

After ending her five-year hiatus from music this month, Teyana Taylor took the stage at the BET Awards to perform her latest single 'Long Time' and a seemingly unreleased track on an artful and complex set. Her performance began in front of a backdrop of skyscrapers in flames. Wore red from head to toe as she glided across the stage to a new track where she sings, 'It's cold outside, but inside I'm on fire.' Then, actor Taraji P. Henson made a surprise appearance as a narrator, floating from near the ceiling in a floor-length white gown. Alluding to Taylor's forthcoming concept album Escape Room, Henson warned, 'Even love is something you must escape.' Next, Taylor performed 'Long Time' while floating herself, wearing a silver, robotic getup surrounded by long, loose cables. She commanded a troupe of over a dozen dancers on the ground while she danced in the air, and sparks flew from the ceiling. Of course, Taylor has had a long and sweeping career, from choreographing Beyoncé's 'Ring the Alarm' music video at just 16 years old, to signing with Pharrell's Star Trak imprint before a stint with Kanye West's G.O.O.D. music, too. She also has had a celebrated career as an actor, starring in the critically acclaimed film A Thousand and One in 2023 and with a turn next to Leonardo DiCaprio in One Battle After Another, coming soon. Last week, Taylor announced her fourth album, Escape Room, which is due out in August. It marks her first album in five years, following The Album from June 2020. Actors Aaron Pierre and Lakeith Stanfield star in the music video for the Escape Room single 'Long Time' that Taylor released last week.
