Generative AI spending to hit $202bln by 2028: SDAIA

RIYADH — The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) has released a new report titled "Generative Artificial Intelligence: Promising Prospects for a Better Future," shedding light on the transformative impact of generative AI technologies and the substantial economic opportunities they present. The report emphasizes the acceleration of global investment and adoption of generative AI, a technology that enables machines to create content such as text, images, code, and simulations by learning patterns from vast datasets. Unlike traditional AI — which is generally limited to classification, prediction, and recommendations — generative AI is capable of complex and creative output across industries. Citing research from Deloitte, SDAIA notes that generative AI can reduce operational costs by 30% or more through task automation and productivity enhancement. A McKinsey survey of over 1,300 companies showed that human resources departments saw cost reductions between 10% and 37%, while supply chain functions recorded profit increases of over 6% in some cases. The report also references 2024 projections from IDC, which forecast that global spending on generative AI will surge to $202 billion (SR758.7 billion) by 2028. That figure is expected to represent 32% of total global AI spending, which is projected to reach $632 billion (SR2.4 trillion). In the Gulf region, SDAIA highlights the findings of a 2024 McKinsey study that surveyed 140 public and private sector organizations. The study found that 75% of participants were using generative AI in at least one area — notably sales, marketing, and software engineering — reflecting the high value generated in these sectors. Moreover, 57% of respondents allocate 5% of their digital budgets to generative AI, and half have developed implementation roadmaps for key use cases. The report also points to the rapid pace of global adoption, with 80% of organizations expected to implement generative AI solutions by 2026. By 2027, 50% are projected to use specialized models, and more than 100 million people globally are expected to rely on robots as digital assistants. © Copyright 2022 The Saudi Gazette. Amazon is reportedly training humanoid robots to deliver packages

Future Amazon orders may be delivered to your door by a humanoid robot workforce. The Information reports that Amazon is developing AI software that will enable robots to operate as package delivery workers that are ferried around in Rivian electric vans, and will soon be ready to start real-world testing at a new facility. Citing an anonymous source 'involved in the effort,' The Information says that Amazon has almost finished constructing an indoor 'humanoid park' at one of the retail giant's San Francisco offices that's roughly the size of a coffee shop. The obstacle course reportedly contains one Rivian van for training purposes, with Amazon aiming to have humanoid robots 'hitch a ride in the back of Amazon's electric Rivian vans and spring out to deliver packages.' The report coincides with Amazon launching a new agentic AI team to help develop technologies that will power robots 'operating in Amazon distribution and logistics hubs.' In a statement to Silicon Valley, Amazon says that 'instead of rigid, specialized robots, we're creating systems that can hear, understand, and act on natural language commands, turning warehouse robots into flexible, multi-talented assistants.' Amazon is already using a variety of autonomous robots in its warehouse operations, including a trial of Agility Robotics' humanoid 'Digit' — a robot that was originally pitched for tasks like sitting in the back of vans and delivering packages, alongside other logistics uses. Amazon's training facility is a concerted effort to make this original vision a reality. The Information reports that a 'variety' of humanoid robots will be tested for package delivery at its facility, including a $16,000 unit from China-based Unitree. Hundreds of thousands of people currently handle delivery operations at Amazon globally. Amazon acquired the robotaxi company Zoox in 2020, suggesting a desire to fully automate end-to-end package delivery, from the warehouse to your front door.

This $101 Million Startup's AI Exposes Fraudsters Disguised As Employees

North Korean spies have found ways into U.S. companies, tricking employers into thinking their legitimate workers, when they're trying to siphon off business' data. Everything seemed fine when one of Eran Barak's customers, a financial services business, hired a remote worker to do their Salesforce admin. In the interview, the man seemed capable of doing what should've been routine work, and he passed all the background checks. Two weeks into the job, though, Barak says his AI software, dubbed MIND, spotted the employee sending highly sensitive company data up to his personal cloud account. The person coming into the office turned out not to be the same person who'd been interviewed, Barak says. 'It was a completely different individual who had 'bought' the job from a professional fraudster.' With so many new risks to business' data, from accidentally employing a fraudster or losing data to North Korean spies with a similar modus operandi, or employees giving away company secrets to AI chatbots like ChatGPT, companies need new security tech to help them monitor and flag these risks. Barak, who cofounded Seattle-based cyber startup MIND in 2022, said his company's AI can prevent costly data leaks with an 'autopilot' that autonomously identifies sensitive data and helps IT teams secure it, claiming it can reduce false alerts about data leaks 'to nearly zero.' 'We want to push what we call a small language model.' On Wednesday, MIND announced a $30 million Series A round led by Paladin Capital Group and Crosspoint Capital Partners at a $101 million valuation. That follows a $10 million round in September last year after it came out of stealth. Barak says MIND's AI is far better than a human at determining the risk of a given piece of data, whether that's a batch of credit card numbers or meeting minutes, and then telling IT what layers of security are protecting them, if any. That means the AI won't leave as many 'blindspots' where sensitive data is left exposed, according to MIND's pitch. To put these insights into action, an AI agent sits on each employee's device and will detect and block data leakages either happening in the browser or via another app. 'We want to push what we call a small language model to the device itself, so we can really classify on the fly much more complex, sensitive data on the device,' Barak told Forbes. The MIND cofounders have a history in successful AI startups. Barak cofounded Hexadite, another security automation tool that was sold to Microsoft for a reported $100 million in 2017. Hod Bin Noon, MIND's VP of research and development, was a director at Dazz, which was acquired by cloud security giant Wiz for $450 million last year, with Wiz itself set to be acquired by Google for $32 billion. MIND CTO Itai Schwartz was a senior engineer at Torq, which makes AI agents focused on cybersecurity. Barak 'built one of the flagship security automation players,' said Paladin investor Gibb Witham, who led the round. He'd been on the hunt for an AI-native company to solve the problems modern AI was creating, Witham said, and the MIND team's deep cybersecurity automation experience was a major draw. Among MIND's chief competitors is another startup, CyberHaven, which hit a $1 billion valuation earlier this year on a recent $100 million raise. Both are relying on AI to do much of the work of the IT security engineer, while looking for leaks across an organization's networks. Not that Barak thinks that AI is yet good enough to be relied on to automate all security tasks. 'It won't completely replace us,' he adds. 'But I can tell you that the depth and precision of the classification that we are doing thanks to the AI, it's unreal.'

Samsung Nears Wide-Ranging Deal With Perplexity for AI Features

(Bloomberg) -- Samsung Electronics Co. is nearing a wide-ranging deal to invest in Perplexity AI Inc. and put search technology from the artificial intelligence startup at the forefront of the South Korean company's devices. Billionaire Steve Cohen Wants NY to Expand Taxpayer-Backed Ferry Where the Wild Children's Museums Are Now With Colorful Blocks, Tirana's Pyramid Represents a Changing Albania The Economic Benefits of Paying Workers to Move NYC Congestion Toll Brings In $216 Million in First Four Months The two companies are in talks to preload Perplexity's app and assistant on upcoming Samsung devices and integrate the startup's search features into the Samsung web browser, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The firms have also discussed weaving Perplexity's technology into Samsung's Bixby virtual assistant, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private. Samsung is planning to announce the Perplexity integrations as early as this year, the people said, with the goal of including the service as a default assistant option in the Galaxy S26 phone line that's slated to launch in the first half of 2026. However, the specific details haven't been finalized and could still change. The tech giant is also expected to be one of the biggest investors in a new round of funding for Perplexity, the people said. The startup is in advanced discussions to raise $500 million at a $14 billion valuation, Bloomberg News has reported. The broad tie-up may help Samsung reduce its reliance on Alphabet Inc.'s Google and pave the way for it to work with a mix of AI developers, similar to Apple Inc.'s strategy for its devices and services. For Perplexity, the arrangement would mark its biggest mobile partnership to date and follows a recent integration deal with Motorola. Representatives for Samsung and Perplexity declined to comment. The two companies entered discussions about a partnership earlier this year, Bloomberg News reported in April. In recent weeks, the two sides met in South Korea, leading to them closing in on an agreement, the people said. Samsung and Perplexity have also discussed building an AI-infused operating system and an AI agents app that can tap into functionality from Perplexity and a range of other AI assistants, the people said. Apple has also shown interest in working with Perplexity. The iPhone maker has discussed using Perplexity as an alternative to Google Search as well as a substitute for ChatGPT integration in the Siri voice assistant, Bloomberg News has reported. 'We've been pretty impressed with what Perplexity has done, so we've started some discussions with them about what they're doing,' Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of services, said during recent testimony at a Google antitrust trial. It's unclear how Perplexity's relationship with Samsung, one of Apple's fiercest rivals, would affect that. --With assistance from Shirin Ghaffary and Yoolim Lee.
