Police arrested Jafruddin Khan on Sept 13, 2017, and a chargesheet was filed in Dec that year. During the trial, the defence argued that the accused came from an impoverished background and had dependents to support. However, Additional district and sessions Judge Sudha (who goes by his first name only) dismissed the plea, stating that financial hardship could not justify a crime. The court found all three accused guilty of murder and imposed a fine of Rs 31,000 on each. In case of non-payment, they will face an additional two months of imprisonment.
