Caught on camera: Man hit by driver at Southside car meet
Video circulating on social media shows the moment a man was hit by a driver at a car meet in a Southside parking lot. Witnesses said that it was supposed to be just a 'park and chill' type of meet. In dash camera video provided to Action News Jax, you can see the car speed across the parking lot before hitting the victim. People then started running over to see if he was okay. 'This car came up and he started doing donuts,' said Brandon Ferrill, who is part of the local car community. 'And first of all, that's dangerous in any parking lot, but this was a crowded parking lot.' 'He showed up to what was otherwise a pretty civilized event. It was just people hanging out here, chilling with their cars and they were here to talk. No one was driving around or anything,' said Ferrill. Another video shows a different angle of the collision. It appears the car swerved before hitting the man, and then took off. Action News Jax spoke with the man who was injured in the video, who said he had been released from the hospital. He said he had a head injury, but is now recovering. We asked JSO if they are investigating the incident, and a spokesperson said they were not aware of the incident or the video. We also requested reports Friday afternoon to see if police responded to the area the night this happened. We are waiting to hear back. As a member of the local car community, Ferrill said they don't stand for any kind of reckless behavior at their meets. St. Marys Bridge to close daily beginning Monday
The Florida Department of Transportation is warning drivers to prepare for detours, with full daytime closures of the St. Marys Bridge planned in June. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< U.S. 17 over the St. Marys River will be completely inaccessible to drivers for several hours a day from Monday, June 16 to Thursday, June 19. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., drivers will instead be directed to I-95 to cross the river between Florida and Georgia. The closure will allow for workers to conduct routine maintenance on the nearly 100-year-old manual swing bridge. Upcoming paving project to affect several roads in downtown St. Augustine
The City of St. Augustine plans to begin a road project this month that will disrupt parking and potentially cause traffic delays. Beginning the week of June 23, a contractor will begin milling, resurfacing, and striping on several streets downtown. The following affected roadways are primarily south of City Hall and in Lincolnville, with one street affected in West City: Artillery Lane: Avilés Street to St. George Street Bravo Lane: Avilés Street to Avenida Menendez Bridge Street: Avenida Menendez to M L King Avenue Desoto Place: Granda Street to M L King Avenue Charlotte Street: Cathedral Place to Treasury Street Cordova Street: St. Francis Street to St. George Street Marine Street: St. Francis Street to Hedrick Street Hedrick Street: Marine Street to the west dead end M L King Avenue: King Street to Bridge Street Sanford Street: Cedar Street to St. Francis Street South Street: Washington Street to Marine Street Tremerton Street: Tremerton Place to South Street Madeore Street: Sidney Street west to the city limit [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Work will be suspended before and during the weekend of July 4 to accommodate holiday traffic, before resuming on Monday, July 7. The affected streets will remain open during construction, but the city anticipates traffic delays. On-street parking will be banned from 7 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday, for the duration of the project. Any car parked on the street and obstructing work may be towed. Update: JEA completes work on water main on San Jose Boulevard in Mandarin
JEA is making progress on a water improvement project in Mandarin. The utility has completed the replacement of a 24-inch water main under San Jose Boulevard (SR 13) between Old River Road and Claire Lane. The water main broke in the summer of 2024. The replacement should prevent future water outages and traffic disruptions, JEA says. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< It is now moving to the next phase of the project, which includes paving and striping the road. Drivers can expect overnight lane closures on San Jose for three consecutive nights, from 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. The estimated completion date is June 19, weather permitting.
