'Unintended Consequences' Put Forever Chemical in US Air for First Time
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Scientists have made the first documented airborne detection of a toxic chemical pollutant known as Medium Chain Chlorinated Paraffins (MCCPs) in the Western Hemisphere. The findings, published in ACS Environmental Au, came during a month-long field campaign in Oklahoma by researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder, who used a high-resolution chemical ionization mass spectrometer designed to study how aerosol particles form in the atmosphere. While the team expected to observe known compounds, the instruments instead registered isotopic patterns that led to the identification of MCCPs—pollutants previously detected in Asia and Antarctica, but never before in North American air. Photo by Tunatura / Getty Images "When we first realized that we had measured MCCPs, we were intrigued and cautious," Ellie Browne, CU Boulder chemistry professor, CIRES Fellow, and co-author of the study, told Newsweek in an email. "Since we had not planned on measuring these compounds, we first had to learn about them and also make sure that our measurements were of high-quality," Browne said. "Once we determined that we indeed were detecting these compounds in the atmosphere, we recognized the importance of these measurements and were excited to contribute to the understanding of how these compounds move through the environment and ultimately impact peoples' lives." Why It Matters MCCPs are used in metalworking, PVC plastics and textiles. "MCCP emissions occur across the entire lifecycle of those products including manufacture, use and disposal," Browne said. Like their chemical cousins—short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), which are already regulated—they resist degradation and can travel long distances in the environment. Because SCCPs have been phased out under U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Stockholm Convention regulations, MCCPs have become more common. Browne said MCCPs have previously been difficult to find in tests, even though researchers expected them to be present in North America. "We always have these unintended consequences of regulation, where you regulate something and then there's still a need for the products that those were in," Browne said in a university release, "So they get replaced by something." What To Know Researchers suspect the MCCPs they found originated from biosolid fertilizers—waste byproducts from sewage treatment—applied to nearby farmland. "While one exposure might not be harmful, because these chemicals can travel long distances and last a long-time in the environment and in living organisms, repeated and continued exposure becomes worrisome," Browne told Newsweek. "Measurements such as ours are critical for evaluating and predicting how these chemicals move through and build-up in the environment. They also inform when and how people are exposed to them. This knowledge is then used to protect people and the environment." While their presence was unexpected, MCCPs share structural traits with PFAS, or "forever chemicals", now banned in Oklahoma's biosolid fertilizers due to persistence and health risks. What's Next The team wants to continue studying how MCCPs end up in the atmosphere and where they are most prevalent, although future studies depend on funding, according to Browne. "Understanding how our health is impacted by the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat requires measuring what compounds are present in air, water and food," she told Newsweek. "Our measurements enhance the understanding of how MCCPs move through the environment and how we may be exposed to these compounds, however, more measurements and investigations are required to understand the problem. "We are excited to see how our measurements contribute to awareness of and investigation into MCCPs. It is important to remember that keeping our communities healthy requires investment in science funding so that studies such as this one can continue."

Court halts Mango airline's business rescue plan
State-owned Mango's step towards resuming flights does not appear to be any closer, four years after the low-cost airline was grounded in July 2021. This follows a Gauteng High Court, Johannesburg ruling that its business rescue plan cannot be implemented. Image: File The process of reviving state-owned low-cost airline Mango appears to have been stopped after the Gauteng High Court, Johannesburg declared that its business rescue plan cannot be implemented. Aviation Co-ordination Services (ACS) hauled Mango and its business rescue practitioner Sipho Sono to court over the plan to save the subsidiary of South African Airways (SAA). ACS, which provided security-related services such as baggage and cargo screening services, baggage reconciliation and check-in services, is among dozens of creditors owed about R2.91 billion by Mango before it was placed under business rescue in July 2021. At the time it was placed under business rescue, Mango did not own any material assets as its most significant assets were leased. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading In September 2021, a couple of months after being placed under business rescue the only asset on Mango's balance sheet was a spare engine bought by SAA for US$9.6m with the lowest indicative offer received in the last 12 months being around US$2m (R30m then). Mango also had an un-flown ticket liability of about R183m at the start of the business rescue through its full value voucher system. ACS is owed over R23.3 million by the SAA subsidiary and was among the creditors who voted against Sono's business rescue plan, which was approved by 98% of the voting creditors. The company objected to a payment to the creditors (clause 6.2.6) in the plan stating that all of the remaining balance of the claims of the remaining concurrent creditors will be ceded to the investor at face value thereof but for nominal consideration. It also indicated that the concurrent creditors, except the SA Revenue Service and the creditors in respect of the un-flown ticket liability, will be paid a "top up" settlement payment for their claims. This meant that the majority of the creditors would be paid 4.43 cents to every rand. ACS complained that the estimated settlement would translate roughly to R44,300 per R1m, a return which is negligible, if not nominal. In addition to the debt acquired by the investor through the cession of the claims of concurrent creditors may be converted to equity (or quasi equity instrument), subordinated or otherwise be dealt with in such manner that Mango will be restored to solvency. On Tuesday, Judge Denise Fisher found that 'the plan, shorn of its complexity, amounts to nothing more than the confiscation of the creditors' claims in order that they be transferred by Sono to an investor who pays no value for them or the shares'. 'The compulsory cession contained in clause 6.2.6 of the business rescue plan is declared to be invalid and of no force and effect. It is declared that the business rescue plan cannot be implemented,' the judge ordered. Judge Fisher said Sono's opposition of ACS's application was unmeritorious. Earlier this month, Sono announced Mango's plans to resume operations and requested passengers with un-flown tickets to register on its website, promising full value refunds once it takes to the skies again after four years. Sono did not respond to requests for comment on Thursday.

Bronx nanny's arrest for alleged child abuse prompts calls for changes to ACS
A Bronx nanny was paid with taxpayer dollars to help care for children, but one family says she beat them with a belt instead. The woman is now behind bars and that family wants reforms and accountability within the city's Administration for Children's Services. They are not the only ones calling for change. What the nanny is accused of Family members of the children say their home security video shows 24-year-old nanny La'Keysha Jackson threatening to beat the kids with a belt in their Bronx apartment last month -- and then doing it. The family of the boys, ages 2, 4 and 6, believes Jackson abused them for months. "The kids are still traumatized," attorney Daniel Szalkiewicz said. Szalkiewicz said the family is relieved Jackson was arrested Monday. She is now facing multiple counts of assault and endangering the welfare of a child. "I spoke with the grandfather this morning and he had tears of joy. I spoke with the mother and she expressed to me how worried she was last night and every day, and now she can finally breathe a little bit easier," Szalkiewicz said. Family wants accountability from the company and ACS Jackson worked for an ACS contractor called Selfhelp Community Services. "We'd love to see ACS hold these agencies accountable for the conduct of these employees," Szalkiewicz said. "We'd love to see ACS have training, and we would [like] ACS to come forward and say this is not acceptable and this is how we're gonna make it better." ACS and Selfhelp would not agree to an interview, but both said in emails that they already use training, background checks, and other methods to improve care. "The safety and well-being of New York City's children is our top priority, and we condemn these despicable actions. Our ACS-contracted homemaking services are supportive, in-home services that provide parents with hands-on training on how to successfully manage daily household tasks like laundry, cleaning and meal preparation. We hold our providers to the highest standards. The provider's employee was immediately terminated and we are actively conducting a full review of the contracted provider," ACS said in a statement. "Selfhelp Community Services is aware of the allegation involving an individual who previously provided services through the ACS homemaking program. This individual has been terminated, and we are fully cooperating with investigations conducted by ACS and the NYPD. As the matter is under investigation, we cannot comment further," Selfelp said in a statement. "Selfhelp upholds strict hiring standards, including background checks, drug testing, and mandatory training to ensure professional, high-quality care." "There is nothing more reprehensible than the abuse of children. We are grateful to the NYPD for apprehending this individual, and we trust that justice will be carried out swiftly and to the fullest extent of the law. Our administration is actively reviewing ACS' contract with the agency who hired this vile individual," a City Hall spokesperson said. NYC DOI wants easier access to ACS records Department of Investigation Commissioner Jocelyn Strauber said she couldn't comment on the case, but she said she's calling for changes to the process of getting ACS records. "We have to go to OCFS, the state agency, the Office of Child and Family Services, and we have to ask for permission to get the records that we want for any record involving an investigation, like I said, of an allegation of child abuse, and there are certain records we can't get," Strauber said. Strauber added it's a lot easier to gain access to records at other city agencies. The DOI is calling for state lawmakers to pass a new bill that would give it access to more ACS records. ACS says it is committed to transparency, appreciates the DOI, and is looking forward to discussing the bill. ACS also says it's conducting a full review of Selfhelp.
