AIADMK accuses Rangasamy government of announcing welfare schemes without budgeting for funds for implementation

AIADMK State Secretary A. Anbalagan has accused the Rangasamy government of announcing populist schemes without budgeting for the financial means to implement them. Addressing a press conference, Mr. Anbalagan contended that several welfare measures announced in the last Budget session aimed at the weaker sections and the student community remained only on paper. He cited as examples some of the announcements made by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy such as the proposal to raise monthly assistance for an estimated 70,000 Below Poverty Line families from ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 that entailed an annual additional outgo of about ₹126 crore and another scheme to provide ₹1,000 monthly assistance to over a lakh women who remain outside the umbrella of any government support that was expected to cost the exchequer an estimated ₹120 crore additionally each year. Likewise, the government had proposed to raise the old age pension by ₹500 for 1.81 lakh beneficiaries at an additional financial burden of ₹108.6 crore per year while proposed increases in educational aid for children of fishermen and the differently-abled, marriages and funerals were projected to cost at least ₹400 crore annually, the AIADMK leader said. He wondered whether these empty promises were made only on paper over governance failures to tap revenue or plugging revenue leakages and with the sole intention of hoodwinking voters ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Mr. Anbalagan also flayed the decision to raise liquor prices to increase revenue as it would further burden consumers. Instead, the government should have opted for reforms in the excise sector that had potential to net about ₹750 crore in additional revenue, he said.

Secure 50% of the seat from private medical colleges, AIADMK tells Puducherry govt.

The AIADMK has urged the government to initiate steps to secure the due share of 325 MBBS seats from private medical colleges in Puducherry for the government quota in the upcoming medical admission cycle and to urgently address the law and order issues related to increased instances of drug-peddling at the tourist destination. A consultation meeting to strengthen the party, as directed by the AIADMK central leadership, chaired by A. Anbalagan, State secretary for the party, passed a resolution urging the Lt. Governor and the Chief Minister to jointly work toward obtaining 50% of the 650 seats held by the Union Territory's three private medical colleges in the interests of aspiring medical students. Other resolutions In another resolution, the AIADMK urged the administration to crack down on drug traffickers, who targeted students and tourists. The government and the police should take strict measures to tackle the increasing crime rate, the resolution said. The party also highlighted the worsening traffic congestion due to the increase in arrival of tourists in Puducherry, and called upon the government to expeditiously complete the flyover work near the AFT Ground on Cuddalore Road and from the Rajiv Gandhi Statue to the Indira Gandhi Statue. In other resolutions, the party called for extending the 10% quota in higher education, currently limited to students who studied continuously in government schools from classes 1 to 12, to students who studied in government schools from classes 6 to 12, cover education expenses of students from the fisher community enrolled in private schools and colleges, and to bear the full education fees of children from the Most Backward Classes in private schools and private higher education, as was being done for students from Scheduled Caste community. The AIADMK also asked the government to increase the age limit for Group C posts to 35 years in the general category. It sought measures to curb the resurgence of new strains of COVID-19, especially as Puducherry was attracting travellers from other States. Another AIADMK resolution took strong exception to the 'specious' remarks by the Leader of Opposition and DMK convenor R. Siva criticising Chief Minister N. Rangasamy's abstention from the NITI Aayog meeting, at a time when speculation was rife that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's presence at a meeting he had skipped for three consecutive years may have to do with currying favour with the NDA to pre-empt further investigations into the corruption in TASMAC, a resolution stated.
