Public warned vs ‘task scams' via messaging apps
Authorities cautioned the public from taking part in 'task scams' sent via messaging apps where victims are given assignments in exchange for cash before being convinced to "invest" their money in return for quick profits. In her report on Thursday's 24 Oras, Darlene Cay said victim 'Bea' lost P9,800 in an 'investment', most of which is money she just borrowed. Bea said she was encouraged to send money via a digital link after she initially saw it quickly gain profits. However, after she sent a larger sum, the money was never returned and the person she was transacting blocked her. Pearl, another victim, said she lost P38,000 through the same scheme. She said the scammers sound very professional and convincing. Pearl said she participated because she was looking for a way to earn extra money. Despite her pleas, the scammer ignored her messages and later blocked her. 'Work from anywhere' Via unsolicited messages through messaging apps, people introducing themselves as members of a digital marketing agency offer "work from anywhere" opportunities. Victims are enticed by earning as much as P9,000 daily just by clicking 'likes' of products in different shopping apps. According to the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC), task scams lure victims with the promise of earning easy money. 'Pasasakayin ka e. Kunwari bibigyan ka ng mga gagawin mo para kumita ka ang mabigat kasi dito, grupo grupo rin yan,' said Undersecretary Gilbert Cruz, PAOCC Executive Director. It is possible syndicates use easy catchers or devices that have the capability to access telephone numbers, messages and data from the smartphones of potential victims. Cruz said the scammers would get these cellphone numbers and would initiate a text blast. If a person's phone receives an ad, he or she could then be convinced by scammers to join by completing their assigned tasks. The phone numbers could also have been sourced from phones whose users clicked on phishing websites according to the Cybercrime Investigation Coordinating Center. CICC Deputy Executive Director Assistant Secretary Renato Paraiso said possible victims could have provided their names, numbers and email addresses believing they were taking part in a promotional event or a discount but these details could be sold to scammers. PAOCC said it is continuing to investigate the said scam which it believes is being operated by Filipinos. Be suspicious Authorities advised jobseekers that no legitimate employer would ask money in exchange for employment and that they would not contact you via messaging apps if you did not apply in the first place. 'Employers do not get in touch with individuals they pass through channels or platforms. Nobody calls from a company to offer a job to somebody. People should be suspicious by this system alone,' said Serge Ortiz-Luis, President of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines. —RF, GMA Integrated News

Tobacco worth Rs11 lakh seized in Trichy; two arrested
Trichy: Trichy police on Monday seized illegal tobacco products worth Rs8 lakh from a warehouse near Thiruverumbur and arrested one person in connection with the case. Acting on a tip-off about large-scale distribution of banned tobacco products in Thiruverumbur area, police detained R Ramesh Kumar, 32, of Manickam Nagar. During interrogation, he reportedly admitted to storing a huge quantity of tobacco products in a warehouse near Sangiliyandapuram. A police team searched the location and recovered around 710kg of various banned tobacco products, including chewable tobacco, snus, and snuff, under different brand names. Police also confiscated Kumar's car, an iPhone, and Rs8,800 in cash. A case was registered against him under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) at Thiruverumbur police station. Kumar was later remanded in judicial custody. In a separate incident on Sunday, Somarasampettai police busted a similar storage unit near Ariyar and seized about 318kg of banned tobacco worth Rs3.5 lakh. Police arrested N Anantharam, 42, of Shanmuga Nagar.

MAIWP aid brings relief, eases burden of Asnaf families
KUALA LUMPUR: Smiles of relief and heartfelt gratitude marked the Ziarah Kasih Asnaf Bersama MAIWP programme, as asnaf residents of the Sri Perak Public Housing Complex here received aid from the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) today. For the recipients, the aid extended beyond material support, offering hope and assurance that their struggles had not gone unnoticed. Four individuals received various forms of basic necessities and medical assistance through the programme, which was also attended by MAIWP deputy chief executive officer (management) Mohd Fauzi Abidin and Zakat Distribution Division deputy manager (social wellbeing) Wan Maizatun Wan Hassan, along with several MAIWP officials. One of the recipients Noorhaini Zainal Abidin, 54, said the assistance had somewhat eased the burden of caring for her youngest son, Harmie Razali, 21, a final-year student at the Indera Mahkota MARA Professional College in Pahang, who sustained a serious brain injury in a road accident in April last year. The petty trader said her son was completely bedridden and fully dependent on respiratory support and special milk, which came at a cost of about RM2,800 a month. 'Initially, I paid for the treatment myself, but his recovery took time. Eventually, I could no longer afford it, so I reached out to MAIWP again, and they provided physiotherapy assistance at home,' she told reporters. Noorhaini said things began to change when MAIWP stepped in to provide assistance to those in need from June last year, which included essential items such as disposable nappies, special milk and medical equipment. She said MAIWP also covered the cost of her son's physiotherapy treatment, amounting to RM150 per session, to help speed up his recovery. Noorhaini said the process of applying for MAIWP assistance was simple, with applicants only required to submit the necessary documents to the office, and aid approved and delivered to recipients' homes within a month. Another recipient, Siti Zuhaili Idris, 31, expressed her gratitude, saying the assistance had been invaluable in helping her care for her five-year-old daughter, Nur Arissa Sabrina Mohammed Zulkarnain, who suffers from a perforated heart. The mother of two said Nur Arissa Sabrina was diagnosed with the condition while still in the womb and was now fully dependent on special milk and intensive home care, with monthly expenses amounting to nearly RM1,000 for milk, nappies and other medical needs. 'Alhamdulillah, things are easier now as MAIWP gives me two boxes of milk (12 cans), nappies, RM600 in assistance and another RM300 every month,' she said, adding that the application process was straightforward and could be completed online without having to leave her child. Meanwhile, Wan Maizatun said MAIWP always strived to channel aid based on the actual needs of each asnaf family. 'We understand that each family has different needs, so they can inform us of what they actually need through our WhatsApp hotline, and we will do our best to meet them,' she said. At the same time, she dismissed viral allegations of aid misappropriation, stressing that all assistance was distributed in full compliance with the standard operating procedures and procurement guidelines set by the government.

Repo man fined RM2,800 for trespassing into vehicle owner's home
PETALING JAYA: A car repossession agent was fined RM2,800 by the Sungai Petani Magistrate's Court after pleading guilty to trespassing into a vehicle owner's home in Bandar Amanjaya last Saturday. According to Sinar Harian, the sentence was imposed by Magistrate Khairatul Animah Jelani onto Muhammad Aiman Mudzakir Azmi, 24, following his guilty plea when the charge was read to him. He admitted to trespassing into the vehicle owner's compound, which was locked, at around 7pm on June 14. As a result, he was charged under Section 448 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of three years, or a fine of up to RM5,000, or both upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nur Hazwani Md Noor prosecuted, while the accused was represented by a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation. The accused also appealed for the minimum possible fine, citing his guilty plea, which had saved the court's time. He added that he is also supporting both his parents and a younger sibling who is still in school.
