DOSM: Average Malaysian salary grew to RM3,332 in 2022, but disparity across sectors and skills persists

KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 — The average monthly salary and wages of Malaysian employees stood at RM3,332 in 2022, reflecting an annual growth rate of 3.7 per cent as compared to RM2,590 in 2015, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has revealed. According to the Economic Census 2023 Employment and Salaries & Wages Statistics report released today, those employed in the mining and quarrying sectors earned the highest monthly wages at RM9,422 in 2022 (2015: RM7,980). This was followed by the manufacturing (RM3,513), services (RM3,493), and construction (RM2,536) sectors — all reflecting steady wage growth since 2015. The agriculture sector remained the lowest-paid, with average monthly wages at RM1,827 in 2022, compared to RM1,463 in 2015. In terms of skill levels, semi-skilled workers made up the majority of full-time employees in 2022, comprising 59.8 per cent or 5.6 million of the total full-time paid workforce of 8.6 million. Skilled workers accounted for 22.3 per cent, recording a 3.1 per cent annual growth rate since 2015, while low-skilled workers made up 17.9 per cent of the workforce with a 3.5 per cent annual growth rate. Average monthly salaries for skilled workers stood at RM6,967 in 2022 (2015: RM6,277), reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.5 per cent. Semi-skilled workers earned RM2,548 in 2022 (2015: RM1,832), with a CAGR of 4.8 per cent, while low-skilled workers saw their wages rise to RM1,798 (2015: RM1,280), with a CAGR of 5 per cent. Geographically, the workforce remained heavily concentrated in Selangor, the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, and Johor — which together accounted for 56 per cent of the national total in 2022. By establishment size, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) continued to dominate employment in the services sector, with 6.5 million people employed in 2022. In contrast, large enterprises employed 3.5 million people, or 34.8 per cent of the workforce. Within MSMEs, 70.2 per cent of employees were engaged in the services sector, particularly in wholesale and retail trade, as well as food and beverage subsectors. 'The salaries and wages gap between MSMEs and large enterprises in Malaysia remained substantial, reflecting structural differences in scale and productivity. 'Workers in large enterprises earned on average 47.5 per cent more than those in MSMEs. 'Average monthly salaries and wages of employees in large enterprises stood at RM4,145, compared with RM2,810 in MSMEs,' the report stated. Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the report offered a clear snapshot of the nation's labour landscape. 'A deeper understanding towards labour cost and employment patterns is key to inclusive growth development and uplifting the nation's competitiveness,' he said. The full report is available on DOSM's official portal.

Dodgers Send Andy Pages Message After Incident With Padres Manager

Dodgers Send Andy Pages Message After Incident With Padres Manager originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andy Pages found himself at the center of a brewing rivalry this week after a tense exchange with San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt. The incident occurred during Monday's 6-3 Dodgers win, when Padres starter Dylan Cease hit Pages with a 97.7 mph fastball in the fourth inning. Advertisement Pages, who had doubled in his previous at-bat, stared down Cease before taking his base, prompting both dugouts to stir, though no physical altercation followed. After the game, Pages told reporters he believed the pitch was intentional, possibly in response to the Padres suspecting he was relaying signs from second base. 'I don't feel like my reaction was right,' he said in Spanish, via ESPN's Alden González, 'but adrenaline took over for me in that moment.' Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andy Pages (44)Jason Parkhurst-Imagn Images Shildt, visibly frustrated, was caught on camera shouting, 'Who the [expletive] do you think you are?'—a remark that added fuel to the Dodgers-Padres rivalry. Advertisement On Tuesday, the 24-year-old outfielder responded by going 4-for-4 with two home runs, two singles, and three RBIs in the Dodgers' 8–6 win over San Diego—his first career multi-homer game in the regular season. Following the performance, the Dodgers' posted a photo of Pages with the caption: 'A perfect night at the plate for Andy.' Pages is now slashing .293/.332/.513 with 15 home runs, 49 RBIs, and six stolen bases through 70 games in his second MLB season. With the series still underway and both teams battling for position in the NL West—the Dodgers holding a 45-29 record while the Padres, at 39-33, trail five games back—this battle adds another layer to one of baseball's most heated rivalries. Rededication ceremony at Boston's Memorial Park honors fallen heroes

Ahead of Memorial Day, Massachusetts Fallen Heroes held its 10th annual rededication ceremony for the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes Memorial that stands in the heart of Boston's Seaport District at Memorial Park. This year, one more name was added to the glass panels that display the names of the 332 Massachusetts service members who have died since the Global War on Terrorism. The name belonged to SSG. Jonathan Maine of the U.S. Army, who passed away on June 12, 2024, in Plymouth. The 26-year-old passed away after a battle with cancer, according to his obituary. 'Names etched here stand for something greater than themselves, an unwavering commitment to duty, to country, and to all the values that we hold dear,' said Brigadier General Richard Cipro of the U.S. Army. He was one of many speakers during Saturday's ceremony. It also included a grand display of respect and honor for the fallen military personnel and their family through cannon fire as well as a 21-gun salute provided by the Massachusetts Army National Guard 101st Field Artillery, the landing of a UH60 Black Hawk helicopter, a performance by the 215th Army Band, and a ceremonial wreath laying. 'I just pray. We pray every day that enough with the wars. Enough. We need to not lose anymore because the pain lasts for a lifetime,' explained Shaquella Butler, who lost five family members who served in all branches of the military. Gold Star Families like Butler had the opportunity to place yellow roses at the memorial site to remember loved ones lost. 'A responsibility we have as American people is to continue to move forward and be there for those families and support them however they need,' said Tyler Vargas-Andrews, a retired U.S. Marine who survived the 2021 Abbey Gate suicide bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan, that killed 13 U.S. service members. 'I continue to live my life in a way that I think my friends who aren't here anymore, my friends who were killed next to me, would want to live their lives if they were still here,' Vargas-Andrew added. Saturday's rededication ceremony was the final event of Patriot Week in Boston leading into Memorial Day. Events were held from May 17- May 24 for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice since the September 11th terrorist attacks. To learn more, visit their website here: This is a developing story.
