When did Sportsnet's Hockey Night In Canada lose its way?

Article content Speaking in hockey terms, there is a core to build on here for Rogers Sportsnet, but as the recently completed Cup final amplified, there is work to be done. With that mind, by bastardizing one of the Hockey Night's best elements — the 32 Thoughts podcast from insider Elliotte Friedman and co-host Kyle Bukauskas — we offer our 15 Faults. 1. When did HNIC begin its slide to its current state? It's tough to pinpoint precisely, but it began sometime after Rogers Communications began its reign as Canadian rights holder 11 years ago. Over time, the show slowly moved away from the industry leader to one often lacking in focus and identity. 2. Pressure on. In keeping with the Rogers theme, the pressure should on with the 12-year, $11-billion deal announced earlier in the spring. Will status quo be enough? Are big ratings (thanks to the Oilers making it to the final) all that really matters? We fear the latter will be the case.

Red Wings Still in Marner Sweepstakes Amid Western Interest Reports

Detroit Red Wings remain in the mix for Marner despite reports he prefers a move out West. Image The Red Wings enter the summer with the hopes of making some moves that can hopefully propel the team into playoff contention for the first time in nine seasons. Detroit has $21.3 million in projected cap space and one of the options that came up was Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner. Advertisement Toronto's 102-point scorer is one of the league's top free agents in years. One lucky team will get a 28-year-old playmaker in his prime that is hungry to play meaningful games but in a quieter market than the hockey hub that is Toronto. More Red Wings: Detroit's Lucas Raymond Named To Sweden 2026 Olympic Roster We recently spoke to the chances on the Red Wings signing Marner, explaining that his hometown of Toronto would still be in relatively close proximity and he would immediately join a team with hopes of making the playoffs. Unlike Utah or Anaheim who have more cap space, Detroit would give Marner an immediate chance to get back into the playoff picture but with a new team that is on the way up towards building into a cup contender. Advertisement The only problem is the media circus still may be too much for Marner. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman spoke on the matter on his recent podcast "32 Thoughts" and explained that he heard from some players on the team that they expect Marner to travel West. Bookmark The Hockey News Detroit Red Wings team site to stay connected to the latest news, game-day coverage, and player features. Friedman describe the move as being a "clean break" for Marner as he would be able to start new somewhere far away from the craziness of his home city. This may make things difficult for the Red Wings to overcome but there are still contenders inside the East. The Carolina Hurricanes have been desperate to grab a big name superstar and Marner could be their guy as they have a slightly higher $28.4 million in cap space available. Friedman explained that the Hurricanes have been vocal about pursuing Marner saying "There's been a lot of reporting that Carolina is interested in him." Advertisement If Carolina could ease Marner's mind into staying in the East, who's to say Detroit can't convince him to join one of the most promising cores in the league. The Vegas Golden Knights have also been rumored to be in the conversation with Marner and could present another tough challenger for Detroit. The biggest factor seemingly will be money as Friedman said that he is expecting the number to be very high on a per annual basis with it landing somewhere around $14 million per season. One of the biggest pieces of news that came out in Detroit's favor is the Marner may also be seeking a shorter term deal like his teammate Auston Matthews has done in the past to allow himself to get an easy out when needed. Advertisement More Red Wings: Moritz Seider Named To Germany 2026 Olympic Roster This could give the Red Wings a chance to persuade Marner by explaining the direction of the franchise and giving a compact plan for a four to five year deal at an aggressive price tag, where by the end, Marner can see the rising stars in the system like Nate Danielson, Simon Edvinsson and Axel Sandin-Pellikka. The hope is by this point, Detroit will be in a contending position once again and fast track the process by adding in a bonifided 100-point scorer that can help players around him succeed. It's a tall order for the Red Wings to come out on top against a lot of teams that are already contending but despite the reports there still is a road map for it to happen. Why Mason West is 'the biggest wildcard in the draft,' and why NHL teams are torn over his football future

That label has stuck, and for good reason. West is not just a promising hockey player; he is also a high-level football athlete, still planning to play another season of high school football. This unusual dual-sport path is rare among top NHL prospects, adding an extra layer of complexity to his draft profile. NHL teams worry that Mason West may choose football Mason West's football commitments are causing real concern among front offices. While scouts admire his growing dedication to hockey, they remain cautious about whether he'll ultimately pursue it as a career. The possibility that West could shift fully to football, especially if he receives an offer to play quarterback at the next level, makes him a risky early-round investment. Elliotte Friedman also pointed out that West might be working harder at hockey only because of doubts about playing quarterback beyond high school. That has not been enough to ease nerves among NHL executives, who fear using a pick only to see him walk away from the sport. West's willingness to risk injury by continuing in football adds to the concern. Edmonton Shake It Off To Win Game 4 | 32 Thoughts Mason West's combined feedback fuels intrigue Despite the doubts, Mason West made a strong impression at the NHL Draft Combine. According to insiders close to the event, West turned heads with his physical testing and interviews, reaffirming the potential that has teams so intrigued. Many believe his ceiling as a hockey player is enormous, if he chooses to stay on that path. Some clubs may gamble a mid-round pick, while others could hope he goes undrafted and becomes a free agent target. Either way, Mason West is dominating conversations not for what he's done, but for what he might become. He is a rare case where raw potential and uncertainty are equally powerful forces shaping draft night decisions.

On the latest episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, sports insider Elliotte Friedman mentioned something interesting about Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares. He said that if Tavares and the Leafs can't agree on a new deal, another team might be waiting. That team? The Anaheim Ducks. But nothing is confirmed—this is just what's being talked about. NHL insider links John Tavares to the Ducks during 32 Thoughts podcast On June 8, 2025, during Sportsnet's 32 Thoughts podcast, hockey reporter Elliotte Friedman shared a possible scenario involving John Tavares. He signed a seven-year contract in 2018. There are now questions about what happens next, especially as Toronto works to build a younger, faster team around stars like Auston Matthews and William Nylander. Friedman said on the show, 'If Tavares can't work something out with Toronto, I wonder if Anaheim could be one of the teams to watch.' Elliotte Friedman Gets Painfully Honest About Possible Player-Coach Role for Sidney Crosby

Elliotte Friedman Gets Painfully Honest About Possible Player-Coach Role for Sidney Crosby originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Penguins officially named Dan Muse as their next head coach this week, replacing Mike Sullivan after three straight seasons without a playoff berth. Advertisement Muse, 42, enters the role with experience as an assistant coach with the Nashville Predators and most recently with the New York Rangers, where he specialized in managing penalty killing and special teams. Muse will now take over a team still anchored by a Penguins core of veterans featuring Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang, all of them under contract for at least one more season. While the appointment signals a new direction for the franchise, Sportsnet's Kyle Bukauskas brought an interesting idea to the table on Thursday. The analyst asked fellow NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on Thursday's episode of the "32 Thoughts" podcast whether Crosby might take on more than just an on-ice role given his experience and legendary stature within the franchise. Advertisement Bukauskas raised the idea of Crosby acting in an unofficial player-coach role next season, something Friedman doesn't see happening. "The only reason I'm going to say no, Kyle, is that I think if you went to Sidney Crosby and said, 'I see you more as a player-coach than anything else right now,'" Friedman said. "You might get stuffed into a trash can." Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby (87) tracks the puck against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Bolte-Imagn Images Despite his age and 20 seasons of NHL experience, Friedman thinks Crosby remains focused on competing and is only interested in playing the game, not coaching it. "I can't think of Crosby as a player-coach," Friedman said. "I still think of him as an incredibly driven guy who wants to win more." Advertisement Friedman added that the hiring of Muse will likely draw more attention to Crosby's opinion and influence within the team's evolving structure, given that this is the first head coaching job taken by Muse throughout his professional career.
