Most complaints from Gurgaon, human rights panel starts camp courts in city, gives nod for online filing
Gurgaon: The Haryana Human Rights Commission (HHRC) received 320 complaints from Gurgaon between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025, accounting for the highest number of cases registered this year. The commission recieved a total of 2,442 complaints from across the state during this period. Faridabad, Hisar, Panchkula and Panipat followed Gurgaon with 258, 182, 173 and 113 complaints, respectively, while Charkhi Dadri reported the least number of complaints at 30. In the lower rung, Charkhi Dadri was followed by Fatehabad, Kurukshetra, Jhajjar and Yamuna Nagar with 46, 49, 52 and 57 complaints, respectively. According to Puneet Arora, protocol, information and public relations officer of HHRC, the commission was committed to upholding justice and protecting human rights . "Between Nov 27, 2024, and May 31, 2025, a total of 3,086 cases were resolved, which included suo motu matters and 56 long-pending cases," he said. After a gap of 14 months, HHRC was reconstituted on Nov 27, 2024 under the chairpersonship of Justice Lalit Barta and with Kuldip Jain and Deep Bhatia as members. At the time, the commission had 3,117 pending cases and in the last six months, 1,438 fresh cases were registered. With this, the total number of pending cases with the commission went up to 4,555, out of which 3,086 cases were resolved till May this year. To ensure quicker access to justice for people, the commission holds regular camp courts and takes suo motu cognisance of matters, officials said. "HHRC remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard and promote human rights throughout Haryana. Now, citizens no longer need to travel to Chandigarh or Gurgaon to lodge complaints," said Arora. People can email their grievances free of cost to hhrc-hry@ A camp court in Gurgaon, held twice monthly, hears cases from six southern districts to ensure swift redress. Moreover, during the last year, the commission also inspected jails in Ambala, Kurukshetra, and Kaithal, assessing medical, hygiene, and vocational facilities. The officials concerned were told about the best practices to be followed and necessary reforms to be undertaken. During a visit to Tau Devi Lal Old Age Home in the city, Justice Batra reviewed living conditions and instructed officials to link eligible women with govt schemes like Aadhaar, Ayushman card, old age pension, disability pension, and family ID. At Swami Shraddhanand Orphanage, Karnal, Justice Batra interacted with children, emphasising the importance of education in shaping a strong society. He appreciated the vedic education being imparted to them at the orphanage and motivated children to strive for a brighter future.

Rare exoplanet discovered in outskirts of the Milky Way
Astronomers have located a rare exoplanet on the edge of the Milky Way. The exoplanet, a gas giant named AT2021uey b, orbits a low-mass star and is located about 3,200 light-years away from Earth, according to a paper published last month in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics. Its orbit around an M dwarf star -- a relatively small and cool star -- completes every 4,170 days. The presence of mass warps the fabric of space-time, similar to how a bowling ball would make a dent when placed on a trampoline, according to NASA. The effect is extreme around "very massive" objects, such as black holes and galaxies, but stars and planets can also cause a detectable degree of warping. The new exoplanet's mass is estimated to be slightly greater than Jupiter's, the researchers said. The unusual size ratio to the star it orbits led to its discovery, as detecting an Earth-type planet would have been "much more difficult," according to a press release by Vilnius University in Lithuania. Gravitational microlensing is a "rare phenomenon," the researchers said. There have only been three such cases of a planet being documented by microlensing in the history of observations, the researchers said. Astronomers search for a temporary light "pulsation" when analyzing a vast amount of data. The vast majority of observed stars -- about 90% -- pulsate for "various other reasons," with a minority of cases actually showing the microlensing effect, Marius Maskoliūna, an astronomy and astrophysics researcher at Vilnius University and co-author of the study, said in a statement. "This kind of work requires a lot of expertise, patience, and, frankly, a bit of luck," Maskoliūna said. "You have to wait for a long time for the source star and the lensing object to align and then check an enormous amount of data." MORE: Could our solar system have 9 planets after all? In addition, most microlensing efforts are recorded at the Galactic Center -- the densest part of the Milky Way, Edita Stonkutė, an associate professor of astronomy at Vilnius University, said in a statement. AT2021uey b was found quote far from the center, in the "galactic halo, on the outskirts of the galaxy, she said. "This is only the third planet in observational history to be discovered so far from the Galactic bulge," Stonkutė said. The microlensing technique is promising because it allows the detection of the "unexpected or even invisible," the researchers said. "What fascinates me about this method is that it can detect those invisible bodies," Maskoliūna said. In collaboration with researchers from the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw, the researchers analyzed data from the European Space Agency's "Gaia" telescope and supplemented it with ground-based observations from telescopes at the Vilnius University's Molėtai Astronomical Observatory. The first discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a star was made in 1995, the researchers said. Since then, more than 6,000 exoplanets have been confirmed. However, the science is still considered "relatively young," the researchers said. "As data accumulated, we learned that many types of planetary systems are completely unlike ours -- the Solar System," Stonkutė said. "We've had to rethink planetary formation models more than once."

Singapore shares dip ahead of Fed decision; STI down 0.3%
[SINGAPORE] Stocks on the local bourse fell on Wednesday (Jun 18), tracking the mixed performance in other Asian markets, as investors awaited the US Federal Reserve's policy decision and release of its updated dot plot. The benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) lost 0.3 per cent or 9.83 points to close at 3,920.81. Across the broader market, decliners outnumbered advancers 243 to 212, with 822.1 million securities worth S$905.7 million changing hands. The biggest gainer on the STI was telco giant Singtel , which rose 1 per cent or S$0.04 to S$3.97. The uptick followed news that its subsidiary Optus Mobile had reached a settlement with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, over court proceedings related to alleged sales misconduct. At the bottom of the index was agribusiness Wilmar International . The counter slid 2.7 per cent or S$0.08 to S$2.93, after Indonesian authorities seized 11.8 trillion rupiah (S$928 million) from its parent company, Wilmar Group, in a palm-oil graft case. Meanwhile, the trio of local banks ended in the red. DBS fell 0.5 per cent or S$0.23 to S$44.23; UOB was down 0.3 per cent or S$0.12 at S$34.83; and OCBC lost 0.3 per cent or S$0.05 to close at S$16.04. She noted that the base case remains for two rate cuts this year, with the first unlikely to happen before September, based on Fed funds futures pricing. Ahead of the decision, the probability of a September cut stood at around 63 per cent. 'While the economic projections and dot plot could shift market expectations, rising geopolitical and trade uncertainties mean the Fed's growth and inflation forecasts may lack precision,' she added. She cautioned that any signals from the dot plot should be taken 'with a grain of salt', as the Fed is likely to emphasise that policy remains appropriately positioned and that future moves will depend on incoming data.

MHT CET 2025 Toppers: 14 candidates secure 100 percentile in the PCB group
MHT CET Result 2025: Fourteen students have secured perfect 100 percentile marks in the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test or MHT CET 2025 in the Physics, Chemistry and Biology or PCB group, the result of which was declared yesterday, June 17. Also Read: 3 city girls score 100 percentile in MHT-CET for sciences Overall, 3,01,072 students registered for the entrance test in the PCB group, of whom 2,82,734 appeared. The attendance was registered at 93.91 per cent. The exam for the PCB group was held from April 9 to April 17. The examination was conducted at 172 centres within Maharashtra and nine examination centres outside the state. A weather warning pushed back kick-off by just over an hour for one of the less enticing group clashes in the expanded FIFA tournament, which has so far not succeeded in filling grounds for every match. However, those who were in attendance were party to an engaging battle. Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso's Mamelodi have won the South African top flight for eight consecutive seasons but finished as runners-up in the CAF Champions League final earlier in June. They claimed victory through Iqraam Rayners' first-half goal. "I think the first half was very beautiful, a lot of control... we didn't get the second goal and the pressure comes," said Cardoso. "But I think my players made a wonderful job, we are very proud, (it was) the first victory of an African team in the tournament." Teboho Mokoena almost doubled Mamelodi's lead with a dipping free-kick but Jo Hyeon-woo tipped his effort to safety. The South Koreans made inroads in the second half and forced Mamelodi back into their own territory in search of an equaliser. Tashreeq Matthews broke loose on the counter for Mamelodi and drilled a good opportunity over the bar, but his team were still able to become the first African side to win a game at the tournament. It was also their first victory in any version of the Club World Cup, after they lost both their matches in their only prior appearance, in 2016.
