One Sydney university has ranked among the world's 20 best in the QS World University Rankings

Sydney's good looks are rarely under question, but it's always nice to be reminded that the Harbour City is more than just a pretty face. Recently, Sydney ranked as one of the most liveable cities in the world (not factoring in cost of living), and in seventh place on the prestigious 2025 Global Cities Index. Now, the QS World University Rankings for 2026 have just dropped, revealing which institutions stand in the best stead for the year ahead. One Sydney university cracked the top ten – hats off to you, than 1,500 institutions from around the world were assessed for the 2026 rankings, including 36 from Australia. The top five were pretty similar to last year, with MIT holding onto first place with a perfect score of 100, followed by Imperial College London, Stanford, Harvard and Cambridge. Australia's highest-ranked institution was the University of Melbourne, which landed 19th on the global list. And just one position behind was the University of New South Wales (UNSW), which held onto its place among the top 20 universities in the world for the third consecutive year. Its overall score of 90.7 saw it drop one position from 19th in 2025, but it maintained impressive ratings for academic reputation (96.3) and ranked equal 12th in the world for sustainability. Of the 36 Australian institutions assessed, UNSW placed first in the employment outcome and international research network categories. Overall, two-thirds of Australia's ranked universities dropped in this year's rankings. Meanwhile, only seven climbed higher, including Monash University's jump from 37th to 36th. The University of Sydney slipped out of the top 20, landing at 25th, with the Australian National University and the University of Queensland also dropping two spots to 32nd and 42nd, respectively. Despite the overall decline, we think it's still pretty impressive that nine Australian universities still made the top 100 worldwide. You can check out the full rankings here. [Graphic News] Seoul climbs to No. 15 in global city rankings

Seoul has ranked No. 15 in a global index of 1,000 cities, climbing 26 spots from No. 41 last year. The 2025 Global Cities Index, compiled by Oxford Economics, evaluates cities based on five categories: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment and governance. New York topped the list, followed by London and Paris in second and third place, respectively, with Tokyo being the only Asian city in the top 10, ranking No. 9. Out of the five categories, Seoul ranked 5th globally — and highest in Asia — in 'human capital' thanks to its strong universities and global firms like Samsung and LG, placed No. 18 in 'economy' amid slowing gross domestic product and employment growth, and came in at No. 129 for 'quality of life,' No. 147 for 'governance' and No. 514 for 'environment.' Other Korean cities in the overall rankings include Busan (No. 281), Jeonju (No. 314), Daegu (No. 321), Cheongju (No. 332) and Daejeon (No. 341). don@

Just in: Sydney has ranked in the top 10 most liveable cities in the world for 2025

Sydney has proven time and time again that it's more than just a pretty coastal idyll. Last month, the Harbour City ranked among the top ten in the prestigious 2025 Global Cities Index. Now, we've done it again in the equally respected Global Liveability Index – ranking as the sixth most liveable city in the world for 2025. For more than two decades, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released its Global Liveability Index, ranking 173 cities across five key metrics: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. The 2025 rankings have just dropped, with Copenhagen overtaking Vienna after a three-year reign to take the title of the world's most liveable city. Coming just behind Zürich in fourth place is Melbourne, which retained its 2024 ranking with an overall score of 97 out of 100. That's well above this year's global average liveability score of 76.1. Once upon a time, Melbourne ruled the Global Liveability Index – named the world's most liveable city for a remarkable seven years straight. While it dropped to eighth place in 2021 and tenth in 2022, the Victorian capital has bounced back, holding steady in the top five globally for the past three years and proudly claiming Australia's number one spot. And our very own Sydney also held onto its overall liveability score of 96.6, but overtook Calgary, jumping from seventh place in 2024 to sixth in 2025. Both Melbourne and Sydney matched perfect scores for healthcare and education (100 each), also scoring strong marks for stability (95) and infrastructure (96.4). But Melbourne pulled ahead in the culture and environment category, scoring 95.8 to Sydney's 94.4. In 2025, one more Australian city quietly crept into the top ten – and that was Adelaide in ninth place with an overall liveability score of 95.9. That's a huge leap from the city's 11th place ranking in 2024 and an even bigger jump from 30th place in 2022. Adelaide shares the same ratings as Melbourne and Sydney across all categories except culture and environment, where it scores a solid 91.4. Could this rising star outshine Australia's biggest cities on next year's Global Liveability Index? We'll have to wait and see. The Australian underdog chasing Melbourne and Sydney in the world's most liveable city rankings

Australia has proven time and time again that it's more than just a pretty island. Last month, our nation's two largest cities ranked among the top ten in the prestigious 2025 Global Cities Index. Now, they've done it again in the equally respected Global Liveability Index – with a third, slightly surprising Aussie capital creeping up the ranks too. For more than two decades, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released its Global Liveability Index, ranking 173 cities across five key metrics: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Woo! Melbourne has ranked sixth in a new global list of the best cities by economic experts

It's no secret that whenever Melbourne makes it onto any global list, we love to shout it from the rooftops. Now, Melbourne has claimed another achievement that's truly worth celebrating, ranking in the top ten on a worldwide list of the best cities. You don't need to tell us that our city is among the best of the best – but it's lovely to be reminded. The 2025 Global Cities Index assesses 1,000 of the largest cities worldwide in determining the rankings, and Melbourne was named sixth in the whole wide world. Our city jumped up from ninth place in 2024, proving that it continues to go from strength to strength. To compile the rankings, researchers at Oxford Economics scored each city on 27 indicators across five categories, including Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment and Governance. Cities were scored under each of these pillars, then the results were combined to reveal the world's top-performing cities overall. Melbourne once again took the crown as the highest-ranking Australian city and overtook heavyweights like San Francisco, Los Angeles and Tokyo. The Victorian capital truly shone in the Human Capital category, where it ranked 12th globally – largely thanks to its high-quality universities and fast-growing economy that's attracted many foreign workers. Melbourne also secured a spot in the top 20 cities for Economics, ranked in the top ten per cent for Environment and tied with Sydney as Australia's highest-ranked city for Governance in 15th place. Topping the entire list was New York in the United States, followed by London, then Paris – a predictable top three. San Jose (the home of Silicon Valley) came in at the fourth spot in the rankings, followed by Seattle rounding out the top five. The report flagged that some of Melbourne's top strengths contributing to its high ranking were its world-class healthcare system, low crime rate, low environmental emissions, stable climate and the multicultural population. But it did also highlight that one of our city's main weaknesses is the increasingly unaffordable housing prices (as is the case in most Australian cities), due to the fast-growing population. Sydney followed very closely behind on the list, ranking seventh in the world, making an impressive jump from 16th place, and Brisbane was ranked 23rd, Perth and Canberra dropped slightly compared to their placings in 2024, coming in at the 31st and 52nd spots respectively. You can find a full list of Australia's rankings in Oxford Economics' Global Cities Index here.
