Watch: NDRF-trained Indian pariah dog joins yoga session in Udhampur ahead of International Yoga Day

A trained canine from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) became the star of a yoga session held today at the 13th Battalion campus in Sui, Udhampur, a day before the 11th International Yoga Day on June 21. A video shared by the news agency ANI captures the four-legged yogi mirroring NDRF rescuers as they flow through asanas. Positioned on its mat, the dog patiently waits for its trainer's cue. With a simple prompt, it rises to its hind legs, then smoothly transitions into a side stretch, seamlessly blending into the group practice. This pup has been under NDRF training for two years and now regularly participates in their yoga drills, making today's session both impressive and heartwarming. India will commemorate its 11th International Yoga Day this June 21 under the theme of 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health', spotlighting yoga's power to unite human wellbeing with environmental balance. June 21 was chosen for its universal symbolism—it marks the summer solstice, the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, embodying themes of energy, balance, and renewal central to yoga philosophy. The idea of an International Day of Yoga was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. By December that year, the UN officially designated June 21 as the global celebration of yoga. This year's International Day of Yoga will spotlight 10 key initiatives, headlined by 'Yoga Sangam'—a large-scale demonstration set to take place at 1,00,000 locations across India. Other events under the campaign include Yoga Bandhan, Yoga Park, Yoga Samavesh, Yoga Prabhava, Yoga Connect, Harit Yoga, Yoga Unplugged, Yoga Mahakumbh, and Samyoga. The initiative continues to promote global awareness around the physical, mental and emotional benefits of yoga—a practice that blends mind and body, thought and action, offering a comprehensive path to wellness.

J-K: NDRF-trained stray dog steals spotlight at Udhampur yoga session ahead of International Yoga Day

Udhampur (Jammu & Kashmir) [India], June 20 (ANI): A unique participant stole the show during a special yoga session organised by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) at its 13th Battalion campus in Sui, Udhampur, ahead of the 11th International Yoga Day. It wasn't a senior officer or yoga expert but a stray dog, trained by NDRF personnel over two years, that captured hearts by flawlessly mirroring yoga asanas alongside 55 human practitioners. The event, held on Friday, aimed to promote wellness and mindfulness, but the dog's precision in poses like downward dog and balancing stretches left everyone in awe. Its smooth execution of poses, from downward dog to balancing acts, carried a strong yet whimsical message: 'If a stray dog can learn yoga, why can't humans incorporate it into their daily lives?' said NDRF team. Speaking to ANI, Inspector Munshi Ram of the 13th Battalion, who led the session, said,'Today, I have conducted yoga with 55 members and one dog. Yoga should be practised daily to remain fit both physically and mentally. This dog has been practising along with us for two years.' He added, 'Our furry friend has been practising along with us for two years. His engagement proves yoga is without boundaries--yoga is for all, including animals. This International Yoga Day, we want people to adopt yoga not merely on June 21 but as a lifetime practice for holistic wellness.' The special event made the NDRF's creative method of encouraging fitness and mindfulness while reaffirming yoga's transcendent popularity shine. As the world prepares to honour International Yoga Day, this move by Udhampur is a poignant reminder that health has no boundaries and that sometimes, the best gurus arrive on four legs. As India gears up to celebrate the 11th International Day of Yoga on June 21, the government is organising a multitude of events nationwide to mark the occasion, with 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health' as this year's theme. Yoga Sangam, the main event, will orchestrate a synchronised mass yoga demonstration based on the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) at over 1 lakh locations across India on June 21, 2025, from 6:30 AM to 7:45 AM. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh national event. This year marks the 11th International Day of Yoga, with the theme 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'. This theme echoes a vital truth about the interconnectedness of health, sustainability, and the environment, aligning with India's 'One Earth, One Family, One Future' vision highlighted during its G20 presidency. The International Day of Yoga 2025 will not just be a one-day observance--it will reflect India's enduring commitment to holistic health, environmental harmony, and global well-being. With 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health' as its guiding principle, India continues to lead the world in connecting physical fitness with mindful living. (ANI)

Paramilitary soldier entitled to disability pension despite voluntary retirement: HC

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court has ruled that a paramilitary soldier suffering from a serious illness is entitled to a disability pension even if he opts for voluntary CRPF had denied disability pension to Lance Naik Ashok Kumar , who developed colour blindness due to a prolonged eye condition, on the grounds that he took voluntary retirement rather than being medically that the soldier's deteriorating eyesight — including total vision loss in his right eye— would have impaired his ability to perform duties, the court said that the CRPF was required to take immediate and appropriate steps, but there was an unexplained and inordinate delay. "The said delay in decision-making certainly can be perceived as a sufficient ground to compel any person to take voluntary resignation and should not be perceived as an act of volition. Hence, the reasons cited by CRPF for denial of the medical disability benefits to the petitioner on the ground that the petitioner submitted his application for voluntary resignation and it was not a case of invalidation out of service on account of medical disability do not appear to be legally valid and sustainable," the court Vinod S Bhardwaj passed the orders on Kumar's petition challenging the May 19, 2017, order passed by the CRPF DGP rejecting his claim for a disability enrolled in the CRPF on June 15, 1985, served in the 13th Battalion. While posted in Manipur in 2000, he was diagnosed with Retro Bulbar Neuritis in the right eye, a progressive condition that led to vision loss. In March 2005, he was declared medically unfit during an annual medical exam. However, his case was kept for review after one year with a recommendation that he be put on light petitioner's counsel, Rajesh Sehgal, contended that regulations of CRPF DGP mandate that a high grade of colour perception is essential for service in the central police forces, and a person falling under a numerical grading E-5 is permanently unfit for contended that despite the petitioner being declared medically unfit on account of being in E-5 category, the CRPF did not invalidate the petitioner from Rehabilitation Board, in its meeting on March 5, 2009, eventually recommended the case of the petitioner for invalidation. The authorities, however, still did not order his discharge, leading to the petitioner submitting an application on April 22, 2009, for voluntary retirement, which was to the plea, the counsel for the central govt stated that in order to determine the actual admissible benefits to an employee who suffers from a disability, his medical examination was required to assess his disability, and since the petitioner was discharged on the ground of his voluntary resignation, his permanent disability was not hearing all the parties, the court quashed the CRPF order rejecting his medical disability pension. The court directed the CRPF to assess the admissible benefits payable to the petitioner on the basis of the medical report.
