Iraqi universities climb in global rankings; Al-Mustaqbal University ranked #1 worldwide for SDG7
Baghdad ( – Iraqi universities have made tangible progress in global academic rankings, achieving high placements in both the QS World University Rankings 2026 and the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings 2025, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced on Thursday (June 19, 2025).
In the prestigious QS World Rankings 2026, ten Iraqi universities were featured, with the University of Baghdad leading the national institutions by placing in the 741-750 bracket worldwide. Nahrain University also secured a spot in the top 1000.
Iraq also had a prominent showing in the THE University Impact Rankings 2025, which assesses contributions to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A remarkable 88 Iraqi universities participated.
In a standout achievement, Al-Mustaqbal University was ranked first globally for its contribution to SDG 7: 'Affordable and Clean Energy,' placing it among the world's top universities for specific development goals. This progress highlights Iraq's commitment to enhancing its academic reputation and contributing to global sustainability.
