The Gautrain has introduced KlevaMova, an initiative providing a 50% discount on train fares for students, pensioners, recipients of disability grants and households with a combined annual income of R350,000 or less.
In a joint statement last week, the Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, and the Gautrain Management Agency said the move aims to ease the financial burden of travel and improve access to affordable public transport across the province.
The announcement comes as transport continue to add pressure point for many households.
According to the Gauteng Household Travel Survey, almost 60% of households spent more than 10% of their income on public transport in 2019/20, up from 55% in 2014.
Diale-Tlabela added that affordable and accessible public transport is crucial for reducing the cost of living for many South Africans, as it significantly impacts household budgets and access to opportunities.
You are eligible to apply for 50% off your train fare if you earn up to R350k annually. Visit https://t.co/XWhgstpZA4 , call 0800 428 87246 (toll-free) or visit our friendly promoters at your nearest Gautrain station. 'As a result of South Africa's historical spatial planning, many people live far from work and opportunities and are faced with high transport costs,' said Diale-Tlabela.
She mentioned that KlevaMova is part of the government's initiative to improve the accessibility of the Gautrain for a larger segment of the population in Gauteng.

'KlevaMova forms part of the Government's efforts to make the Gautrain more accessible to a large share of the population in Gauteng, attract a diverse range of passengers across income groups, and ensure that cost is not a barrier to accessing an efficient, safe, and convenient public transport service,' She said.

South Africans say YES to DStv sports packages

South Africans are fully supporting Multichoice's contemplation of offering a sports-only package for DStv subscribers. The satellite television company is also toying with the idea of unbundling SuperSport from its pay-TV platform. In recent months, the company has taken a massive knock in revenue loss after losing hundreds of thousands in subscriptions. According to social media users, this follows the company's tone-deaf approach to affordability, diversity, and demands. Earlier this month, Multichoice Group CEO Calvo Mawela stated that the company would investigate whether unbundling SuperSport from DStv and launching a sports-only package would be a feasible option for its business model. He said at the time: 'We've accelerated that project in terms of getting us to finalise which direction we're going to take in this financial year. But yes, we are considering all options as part of a broader product offering going forward'. The investigation will conclude at the end of the current financial year-end in March 2026. Broadcaster Gareth Cliff polled his followers to see if they would support the move to a sports-only tailored DStv package or simply a SuperSport option. An overwhelming 94% of voters responded positively. Here's what a few had to say… @renierferreira: 'PAY PER CHANNEL ONLY! People don't want DStv 'bundles'. I'll pay R99 pm just for SuperSport 1 on ONE device.' @WTFSA13: 'R350 for all sports channels, and I am in' @SwartNatalie: 'Yes, then we can actually afford to watch sport again!' Currently, the SuperSport group of channels is offered on DStv's Premium package – it's most expensive – which currently costs R949. For many sports enthusiasts, 'off season' means pausing their subscriptions or cancelling them altogether. In multiple financial reports, Multichoice has acknowledged that the rising cost of living meant that 'households are struggling to make ends meet and many had no choice but to give up their DStv subscription for the time being.' Gabrielle Union shares advice on financial independence

Gabrielle Union recently opened up about the 'stupid' purchase she made with her first big paycheck. The actress shared the story during a panel at the American Black Film Festival in Miami on 12 June. The actress, revealed that despite her father's advice, she bought a brand-new car as a symbol of her success. 'I walked into Mazda and I bought myself a black on black Mazda Miata with leather seats,' Union said. 'Lemme tell you about leather seats in Los Angeles. Do you know I scorched myself every time I got out? Yeah, that was my first purchase. And it depreciated the second I drove it off the lot!' Her father had warned her against buying a new car because it loses value immediately, but she went ahead anyway, feeling she had 'made it' with a Mazda, according to Page Six. Gabrielle Union's story resonates with many young professionals who feel the urge to celebrate their first financial success with a big purchase. Only to learn valuable lessons about money management. She has since become more mindful about finances. Union and her husband, former NBA star Dwyane Wade, have been open about their financial partnership. They split their household bills evenly but also have a prenuptial agreement to protect their individual wealth. This reflects a modern approach to financial independence and shared responsibility. Wade explained, 'My wife, Gabrielle Union, is a working actress who spends time away from the family to go work, build. There are some things I pick up versus some things she picks up but she does some, I do some.' He also noted the importance of protecting assets, saying, 'You're a millionaire, you got money. You work hard for yourself'. Gabrielle Union's candid reflection offers a useful lesson for South Africans navigating their own financial journeys. Celebrate your achievements, but be wise with your money. As Union learned, some purchases can be 'so stupid' but are part of the learning curve towards financial savvy. Her story also underscores the value of financial communication and planning within partnerships, a relevant message for many households today.
