Prayers for first responders, CPF-family, in street where seven year old died
Middelburg's crime fighting fraternity is in mourning following the death of a seven year old girl in Meyer Street this afternoon, where she was struck by a truck while riding her bicycle with her brother.
The girl's father, who is currently in Turkey, will be arriving in South Africa tomorrow around 12:00.
The man, who is a contractor, also serves as an Executive of the Local Community Policing Forum's Sector One command.
The seven year old was out on a bike ride with her brother when she was struck by the truck.
The truck mounted the pavement the girl was rushing towards, after her brother mounted the curb to get out of traffic.
The devastated boy threw down his bicycle and ran home to inform his grandfather of the accident.
The boy's uncle rushed to the scene, where family members later joined.
CPF Chairperson Juanitha Groenewald meanwhile, also rushed to the scene to support her fellow CPF members, many of whom left work to support their CPF colleague's bereaved family on the scene.
Groenewald requested the presence of local Pastor and veteran Chaplain, Callie Joubert, who prayed for first responders including SAPS, local fire brigade, emergency services, pathology services, local criminal record centre, as well as all the CPF members who gathered on the scene.
The majority of the first responders that assisted are also parents.
'We are a family, and the father, who is heading back to South Africa overnight, is one of the CPF's most beloved and hard working members,' Groenewald says.
She added the outpouring of love from the community following the tragedy has been incredible.
'We are doing everything we can to support them, and ask that the community allow the family to reunite in their grief with dignity and respect'.
She thanked Chaplain Joubert for his support and spiritual guidance, not only to the family of the girl, but to all first responders he's been supporting over many years in service.
Joubert is also a trauma counsellor.
Meanwhile the Middelburg community has responded with outrage over the accident which they blame solely on the number of trucks moving throughout town.
A call has been made for the community to unite in an effort to force law enforcement to keep trucks off our roads.

Mooiplaats home invasion ends in fatal shooting
A home invasion in Mooiplaats, East of Pretoria, on Friday, June 20, culminated in a shooting between security guards and suspects. According to police spokesperson Johan van Dyk, the events began when a resident heard his dogs barking outside and went to investigate at around 21:30. 'The man was approached by five adult African men armed with pangas,' Van Dyk stated. The men then attacked the victim. 'The suspects also forced entry into the homes of other tenants, attacking them and robbing them of a television and a cell phone. The suspects then fled the scene on foot.' While police did not disclose the extent of the victims' injuries, social media posts suggested they were severe. According to Van Dyk, private security in the area tracked the suspects into nearby bushes. 'Seeing that they were surrounded, the suspects allegedly attacked the security guards with the pangas. The guards retaliated, shooting two of the suspects. One died at the scene, while the other was rushed to a nearby hospital.' Van Dyk confirmed that police are investigating a case of house robbery, murder, possession of stolen property, and possession of house break-in tools. Germiston youth showcase talent and promote crime prevention
The Germiston Youth Crime Prevention Desk hosted a vibrant 'Showcasing your talent' event at Ext 9 Churchview on June 16, co-ordinated by Sergeant Mpho Mokgawa and Seagent Regina Ramokolo. In partnership with stakeholders including the CPF, Bertha Gxowa Care Centre, and Primrose Youth Desk, the event provided young people a platform to display their talents and nurture skills aimed at diverting them from street life. ALSO READ: Primrose and Bedfordview residents unite in Youth Day clean-up 'Participants were motivated with trophies and medals. The event coincided with Youth Day commemorations and featured sessions on reporting abuse, rape cases, and gender-based violence,' said Mokgawa. Performers hailed from Germiston extensions, Katlehong, and Dukathole informal settlement. Sponsors included Roxanne Fruit Market, Germiston Cash and Carry, Rand Refinery, SPAR, Colourcraft Auto, and Buds and Brews Africa. How the Correctional Services plans to allocate R1. 2 billion for prisoner food provision
The Department of Correctional Services has placed the provision of food for prisoners as one of the top four cost drivers of its budget after compensation of employees, property payments, and public-private partnership support. Responding to parliamentary questions from EFF MP Betty Diale, Groenewald said the department spent R1.4 billion on the provision of food on prisoners in 2023/24 financial year. The amount had increased to R1.5 billion in the last financial year that ended in March 2025. 'For the 2025/26 financial year, the department allocated R1,286,972,000 for the provision of nutrition to inmates,' he said. Video Player is loading. The document puts the provision for food to the tune of R952,975. Groenewald also said the department planned to maximise the utilisation of the services of the prisoners to produce food for themselves, to enable the department to redirect funds to other essential programmes. He said the prisoners will participate in the production workshops in agriculture to maximise their skills utilisation for bread and agricultural production for their ration. 'The self-sufficiency and sustainability programme in the department is centred around offender development, through the provision of work opportunities to offenders in bakeries and agriculture. Expansion of bakeries and agricultural projects towards an increase in offender skills utilisation for food production,' he said. The department's strategic plan document states that the department wants to become self-sustainable through activities such as those in production workshops, bakeries, agriculture, skills development, formal education and training, as well as through arts and culture. 'The department will expand marketing of production workshops' products and services to other client departments to improve revenue generation.' Meanwhile, Groenewald revealed that the cost per capita per inmate incarcerated for the 2025/26 financial year is R462.13 per day. Asked how his department managed financial implications for imprisonment of foreign nationals, he said there were 13,181 sentenced foreign nationals in prisons as at May 4 this year. 'The total cost to accommodate 13,181 sentenced foreign nationals on 4 May 2025 was R6,091,335.53 per day.' He stated that foreign national prisoners were not a separate category of inmates. Groenewald added that there were currently no bilateral agreements with neighbouring countries to transfer sentenced foreign national prisoners to serve in their countries of origin. 'The DCS is in consultation with the South African Police Service, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, and Department of International Relations and Cooperation to formalise a South African procedure to inter-state transfer of offenders.'
