Amit Shah launches language hub to 'decolonise' admin

Time of India06-06-2025

NEW DELHI: Continuing with his govt's 'decolonisation' project, Union home minister
Amit Shah
on Friday launched an Indian languages section within the department of official language as a step towards dispensing with the role of English in official communication.
"It would prove to be a milestone in the path to freeing administration from the influence of foreign languages," Shah said as he announced the formation of Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag.
So far, English had been relied upon for easy and faster official communication and filework between the Centre and non-Hindi speaking states and also among the latter. "We will definitely win the battle against imposition of English upon us," Shah, who over his six-year tenure in MHA has ensured that all filework and official communication in MHA is carried out in Hindi, declared at the launch of the Indian languages section on Friday.
Elaborating on the purpose of Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag at a press conference last year, secretary in department of official language Anshuli Arya had stated: "Just like Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speeches in (non-Hindi speaking) states get instantly translated and can be heard by the public in their respective regional language, the Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag, in collaboration with Centre for Deployment of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), will put in place a universal translation system for official communication.

"For instance, if the chief minister of Tamil Nadu writes a letter to the Centre in Tamil, the Union minister here can read it in his language and have the reply sent in Tamil. This will help bring the regional languages on to the centre-stage," Arya said.
In his address on Friday, Shah said the Indian languages section had made the department of official language "complete" by providing a strong and organised platform to all languages, incorporating the linguistic diversity of India.
Shah underlined that the Indian people's potential can be fully exploited only when their process of thinking, analysis and decision-making are in their mother-tongue. "Every language of ours is completely connected with other languages and development of all languages is not possible without each other...they assimilate like rivers into the Ganga of Indian culture," the Union home minister stated.

Sukanta, doctor who asked question during CM's lecture ‘detained'

STATE BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and a London-based doctor, Rajatshubhra Bandyopadhyay, were both detained by the city police amid a roadside conversation in south Kolkata's Bhabanipur area on Friday. Although they were both released around three hours later, the incident led to protests by BJP workers and a political firestorm. The BJP claimed that around 25 of its workers were also arrested and released nearly hours later. The drama unfolded as Majumdar, who is also a Union minister of state, arrived in Bhabanipur on a motorcycle to observe 'Paschimbanga Dibas' (West Bengal Day), defying police restrictions. After garlanding a statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, he went to meet Bandyopadhyay at his residence on Harish Mukherjee Road. Police intercepted Majumdar's convoy, initially claiming that the doctor was not present at home. However, a video later released by the BJP on social media purportedly showed Bandyopadhyay at his residence, prompting protests from party supporters. They accused the police of misleading them and alleged that the state government was 'weaponising the police' to stifle political expression. Amid the standoff, Bandyopadhyay stepped out of the premises of his home to meet Majumdar on the street. The doctor recently garnered attention for publicly questioning Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during her lecture in London, a video of which had been widely shared online. Their conversation was cut short and both Majumdar and Bandyopadhyay were escorted into police vehicles and taken to the city police headquarters at Lalbazar. 'For what reason have we been detained? I have no clue,' Majumdar told mediapersons as he was led into the van. 'Even a visit to a doctor's house has now become a crime?' a BJP worker questioned. The ruling Trinamool Congress defended the police's actions. 'The BJP is creating provocations. The doctor in question has a track record of inciting controversy. The police acted in accordance with the law to maintain peace in a sensitive locality,' said TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh.

HC judge calls for deeper engagement with law

Dimapur: Justice Y Longkumer, judge of Gauhati High Court, Kohima bench, on Friday called for deeper engagement with law, greater professional development and renewed commitment to justice by the lawyers. She said the panel lawyers, who often serve as the first line of access to justice for the marginalised and under-represented, now play a unique and essential role as educators, advisors and counsellors for common citizens at a time when the Indian legal system is undergoing a pivotal transition with the introduction of new criminal laws. Longkumer was speaking at the one-day orientation programme organised by the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority on new criminal laws — Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) — for panel/retainer lawyers and Legal Aid Defence Counsel System lawyers in Kohima. She said the Indian criminal justice system is undergoing significant reforms with the introduction of the BNS, BNSS and BSA, replacing the IPC, CrPC and Indian Evidence Act. "These new legislative reforms are not just mere cosmetic changes but represent a new way of thinking on how the justice system is perceived, delivered and experienced by the common citizens," Longkumer said. She said the lawyers, who serve in the legal services panel, are often the first line of access to justice for the marginalised and under-represented, and their role now is more important than ever. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top Cardiologist Says This Food Can Do Wonders For Your Health Gundry MD Learn More Undo "You have to learn to adapt to changes with professionalism and as it is with any legal transition, there will be challenges and uncertainties in the interpretation," the judge said. On existing practical difficulties, Longkumer cited the existence of different interpretations and sources, questions and the practical burden of unlearning and relearning while observing that now they have to change their mindset and start to unlearn the IPC, CrPC and learn the new laws.

EPS plans to launch poll campaign from Coimbatore in July

Chennai: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami is planning to start his campaign from Coimbatore, in July or Aug against the backdrop of DMK and BJP already actively engaging with the electorate, multiple sources told TOI. Meanwhile, BJP is preparing for Union minister Amit Shah's visit, expected on July 8, to address the new team of office bearers for Nainar Nagenthran. BJP may streamline its decision-making process by limiting its core committee to 10 members to improve efficiency as the party gears up for upcoming assembly election. Palaniswami is scheduled to hold a second round of discussions with district secretaries and functionaries on June 24, with a focus on the booth level committees and strengthening the party's grassroots presence. AIADMK's campaign strategy will highlight failures of DMK govt. An associate familiar with the campaign strategy said, "It is going to be a mix of rallies, road shows and marches. EPS plans to address issues from corruption to law and order during his campaign, aiming to capitalise on anti-incumbency sentiments against the Stalin govt." The AIADMK district units are actively involved in recruitment drives. They are focusing on attracting young people to the Ilaignar and Ilam Pengal Peravai, the student's wing, and the newly formed sports wing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Comment se préparer à l'avenir de l'investissement eToro Market Updates Lire la suite Undo The party's booth level committees are also prioritising the inclusion of younger members to counter opponents. Amit Shah's visit aims to strengthen the party's position in Tamil Nadu. "The minister told core committee members last time that he would frequent Tamil Nadu and closely monitor the political situation and work towards unseating the DMK govt," a BJP leader said. Shah's previous visits, included three in less than four months, to Coimbatore, Chennai and Madurai. Since his appointment as president of the state unit, Nainar Nagenthran finalised his team of new office-bearers, vice-presidents, general secretaries, secretaries, and treasurers, and submitted the list to the central leadership. "The changes will be very minimal as election is fast approaching. An announcement will be made shortly," a party leader said. Nagenthran, a former AIADMK minister, has been actively engaging with senior leaders from his former party, and vice-versa.
