Armed robbers steal cellphones and pastor's car after storming night prayer service at Mpumalanga church

Mpumalanga police have opened a case of business robbery after armed suspects stormed a church during a night prayer service in Numbi in the early hours of Saturday.
According to police, no arrests have been made.
Congregants were attending an all-night prayer service at The Moving Ministries of God Church when five unknown men wearing balaclavas entered the church.
Police spokesperson Lt-Col Jabu Ndubane said the suspects, armed with pistols, threatened the congregants and robbed them of 11 cellphones, two amplifiers and the pastor's vehicle keys.
'The stolen items were loaded into a white Audi Q3 SUV with registration number KFM 302 MP, which the suspects used to flee the scene. The vehicle has not been recovered at this stage, but tracking efforts are ongoing through the Cartrack company,' Ndubane said.
Acting provincial police commissioner Maj-Gen Zeph Mkhwanazi condemned the incident.
'We grew up knowing that the house of the Lord is a sacred place to be respected. It is deeply concerning that criminals now boldly target churches. We urge congregants to remain vigilant, especially during night gatherings, to ensure their safety and avoid falling victim to such crimes.'
Ndubane said no injuries were reported during the incident and no shots were fired.
'Anyone with information that may assist in locating the suspects is urged to contact Det Capt David Hlatshwayo on 0722337530,' he said.

Labour department denies racial quotas in Employment Equity Amendment Act

According to the Employment Equity Act, 'black people' is a generic term that includes African, coloured and Indian people. This definition in the Act has not been amended since 1998. According to the 2025 amendments, employers with 50 or more workers are required to ask each worker to fill out a form to declare their occupational level in terms of race, gender and disability status information. If an employee refuses to fill out the form or gives incorrect details, the employer is allowed to use reliable past or current information to determine the person's race, gender or disability status. This process must be done at the workplace and is the employer's legal duty. The DA accused the minister of not conducting a formal investigation based on evidence to establish the 'South Africa continues to be one of the most unequal nations on Earth, with more than eight million South Africans unemployed and a small elite enriched, making the evidence against employment equity regulations undeniable,' Bagraim said. The Act as amended further sets hiring quotas for 18 economic sectors, from mining and transport to construction and agriculture, in a bid to increase employment opportunities for 'designated groups' including black people, women and people living with disabilities. The DA noted that South Africa no longer uses the Population Registration Act, an 'It cannot stand that employers become racial classification agents,' Bagraim said.

Arrests after burnt bodies found in KwaNobuhle, climb to eight

The number of suspects arrested in connection with the two burnt bodies, believed to be those of two teenage girls, that were discovered in KwaNobuhle on Wednesday, has risen to eight. Police spokesperson Brig Nobuntu Gantana said the suspects, aged between 16 and 27, would appear before the KwaNobuhle magistrate's court on Monday. 'This follows the initial report indicating four suspects, but moments later, there was a detention of an additional four suspects, after an interrogation process.'
