Eau Claire complex set for demolition destroyed by fire

CBC29-01-2025

The last standing condo building in the Eau Claire neighbourhood's River Run complex burned down on Tuesday night.
At around 9 p.m., the Calgary Fire Department responded to several calls for a building on fire in the downtown community, on the 100 block of Second Street S.W.
On arrival crews found a multi-story condo building engulfed in heavy flames and smoke.
The building, slated for demolition later this week, was bought by the City of Calgary to make space for the Green Line LRT project. It was fenced off, abandoned and there were no occupants inside.
"The portion of the complex on fire was the last to be demolished on site and was slated for demolition this week," reads a statement from the Calgary Fire Department.
"Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control and determined that the condition of the building prohibited entry."

Northwest elementary school and southeast McDonald's evacuated due to Friday morning fires

Investigations are underway into what caused a pair of minor fires Friday morning at a northwest Calgary elementary school and a southeast Calgary McDonald's. At at 9:50 a.m. fire crews responded to reports of a fire in a classroom at Sunnyside School, on the 200 block of 7 Street N.W. A Calgary Fire Department spokesperson said the school was quickly evacuated and the blaze put out with a fire extinguisher. No injuries were reported. There was no structural damage to the building, but some smoke damage to the classroom. At 10:30 a.m., crews were dispatched to the McDonald's on the 5000 block of 130 Ave. S.E. The fire was called in by the alarm company as soon as smoke detectors activated because of a small fire in the fryer. Everyone was evacuated. There were no reports of injuries.

Calgary firefighters face serious challenges fighting northwest house fire

The Calgary Fire Department said calls started coming in around 2 p.m. with reports of heavy smoke and flames coming from a house located off Bowdale Crescent Northwest. When crews arrived, they were faced with several challenges fighting the fire. View image in full screen Calgary firefighters were faced with difficulties getting trucks into the area and a shortage of water when they responded to a house fire off Short Road northwest on Tuesday afternoon. Global News The house is nestled in a forested area, along Short Road, just below Sarcee Trail — an area that was annexed by the City of Calgary years ago and with limited access to fire trucks. 'So we have crews trying to make their way up a narrow road and we don't have the benefit of a constant water supply from a hydrant, so to be able to deliver uninterrupted water is incredibly important,' added Henke.
