Priory boss defends May Day prices - as Belmont Street venue tickets in high demand

The boss of Priory on Belmont Street has opened up about his plans for the highly anticipated May Day weekend.
Grant Leslie is hoping to have one of the best Sundays of 2025 when the May Day weekend rolls around.
The venue has recently undergone a major makeover and May Day will be one of its first big events since reopening.
Already, tickets have been selling out fast, with other venues on Belmont Street charging up to £56 per entry ticket, such as Revolución de Cuba.
Soul, Paramount and Motif were selling tickets for between £16 and £55, although some were combination tickets for multiple venues.
Grant was keen for the 900-capacity venue to be the go-to destination for the May Day afterparty, planning to open only from 10pm until 3am.
However, on release of the first batch of tickets, he soon realised demand was very high and adapted his plan.
The first release was priced at just £13.44, the second at £16.80, the third at £22.55, and the final release at £28.25.
Priory will now be open from 12pm until 9pm during the day for partygoers. It will then reopen at 10pm after a quick turnaround for the afterparty.
He also defended the high ticket prices of other venues.
He said: 'A lot of the big venues are putting on big acts. It's costing them money to actually run the events. That's why they've got a high ticket price attached to them.
'Unfortunately, we've all got bills to keep and some of these things cost money to get put on and other venues have had to put tickets on sale, which is fair enough.'
Grant revealed he was in talks with an act that wanted £45,000 to perform at his venue – this would have bumped up the ticket price to £50 each.
However, he believes people who want to go out for May Day budget for such an occasion.
He said: 'We want Priory to be the final destination for partygoers on May Day.'
The nightclub has been open for a few weeks and Grant says they have been able to capture the 25-plus demographic, while the beer garden will open just in time for May Day.
He also says that Priory's drinks rates will remain as normal on May Day.
He added: 'The feedback from customers who come into Priory since its reopened has been amazing. They are really happy that we are open again.'
In a break with tradition, Prohibition, also owned by Grant, will offer free entry on May Day, with entertainment from a Pitbull tribute act.
Grant says the venue has been free entry for the past 16 years. He intends to keep it that way, as there were little extra costs involved for May Day.

Hugh Grant 'unrecognisable' in sinister horror role as he ditches rom-com past

Hugh Grant stars in the American psychological horror film, Heretic, which was written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the filmmakers behind A Quiet Place An electrifying new entry in the horror scene, the 2024 film has garnered critical acclaim, notably for Hugh Grant's 'brilliant' portrayal in the latest psychological terror, Heretic. Penned and helmed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the shrewd minds behind A Quiet Place, the American chiller touches upon religious themes with a focus on Mormonism, questioning the fundamentals of belief and the potential for religion to be wielded as a means of manipulation. ‌ In Heretic, Hugh Grant, at 64, embodies Mr Reed, an unconventional character fascinated by the Mormon church. Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East feature as Mormon missionaries who call upon him, yet as events unfold, Mr Reed's motivations appear increasingly sinister against the backdrop of his mysterious dwelling. ‌ A review from Rotten Tomatoes says: "Really liked this film, thought-provoking in the ways in which it gets you to look at religion. Great to see Hugh Grant in something other than a floppy-haired love interest... The ending makes you question, 'How did it really finish! ?' So in my mind, a good movie." Grant's stirring rendition in Heretic has led to nominations for best actor at the Golden Globes, the Critics' Choice Awards, and the BAFTAs. But industry nods aside, audiences too have been taken aback by how distinct this role is for him, a stark shift from his renowned romantic comedy roots, reports the Mirror US. The actor gained notoriety for his portrayal of the archetypal British gentleman in a slew of 1990s romantic comedies, many penned by Richard Curtis. His roles in Love Actually, Bridget Jones, Notting Hill, and Four Weddings and a Funeral typically cast Grant as a lovable man smitten with love, making his appearance in Heretic a stark departure that left fans taken aback. One critic said: "Great acting. Hugh Grant was fantastic. I love when they play roles totally out of character. Must see." Another opinion expressed admiration for Grant's performance as the enigmatic older gentleman, stating: "Excellent concept, expertly portrayed by Hugh Grant. Chilling and captivating with a real sinister chemistry. The only thing that lets it down is a bit of a lackluster ending, but otherwise it's great." The film presents an unsettling scenario where two young Mormons, after a probing conversation about their faith at Mr. Reed's residence, are given a choice between two doors based on their belief in God. However, both doors ominously lead to the same grim destination. A viewer said: "Hooked me from the start", adding, "This film questions religion and your sanity. Fantastic performance from everybody. You can't help but love Hugh Grant in this." For those seeking a new horror flick or a film that promises to unsettle, Heretic is currently available for viewing on Apple TV.

Family pay tribute to bubbly hospital radio volunteer Brenda

Brenda Jones (née Pink) died at Glan Clwyd Hospital, aged 91, on March 23 after a short illness. Brenda, of Rhyl, was married to the late Joseph (Joe) Jones, who died in May 2024. The couple had three children: Stephen, Leslie, and Caroline. Brenda with husband Joe (Image: Submitted by family) Brenda, a cherished granny to Jazmin, Tabitha, Sophie, and Saffron, was one of identical twins, alongside her sister Elsie. The sisters were born into a showbiz family. Their father, Stanley Wilson Pink, worked for 20th Century Fox in Manchester as a film distributor, organising film premieres for cinemas and meeting many film stars of the day - including Shirley Temple, Jimmy Clitheroe, and Frankie Howerd. Brenda and Elsie collected autographs from the celebrities they met through their father. Sadly, Stanley passed away from cancer at a young age, and the family moved to Prestatyn. Brenda and Joe married in 1954 and moved to Wrexham, where Joe worked. Joe worked for Midland Bank, and Brenda worked for Monsanto. After their first two children were born, the family moved to Rhyl where Brenda and Joe ran a newsagents on Vale Road for five years called J&B's. Singer and cruise star Jane McDonald with Brenda (Image: Submitted by family) When Caroline was born, the couple left the shop. Joe went on to work for the local council, while Brenda began working at Rhyl Sports Centre - first in the café, then the ticket office, and eventually as PA to the centre manager, before retiring. Brenda began volunteering at Glan Clwyd Radio in June 2000 and quickly became a beloved part of the radio family. Leslie said: "After joining the committee and then later on, as press officer, she had her own show every Wednesday morning playing some of her favourite music from show, stage and screen for patients and staff in the hospital. She was a big fan of stage shows such as Phantom of the Opera, The Sound of Music and Mamma Mia. She used to get press invitations to see shows at both Rhyl Pavilion and Venue Cymru Llandudno including the annual Christmas pantomimes and UK touring companies. She reviewed these and helped promote them for the theatres. "She would often invite celebrities, actors and singers who would be performing in the various shows and pantomimes onto her radio show. She was very experienced at interviewing and getting them involved in the show. "She also invited local MP's and councillors to guest on her show asking them to pick their favourite pieces of music to play." Brenda also ran regular competitions to win theatre tickets and hosted ward bingo nights and quizzes for the benefit of patients. Brenda, Jane McDonald and Brenda's daughter Caroline (Image: Submitted by family) "She would often be in attendance along with Tony Mannix and other radio presenters at outside broadcasts in the Radio Glan Clwyd van playing music and compering at many local events such as the May Day parades, local car shows and summer fayres," Leslie said. She was recognised three times for her contribution to the community through her work with Glan Clwyd Hospital Radio. RELATED NEWS "In 2011, mum was nominated to go the Queen's Garden Party at the Palace," Leslie said. "Caroline accompanied her and they both had a fabulous day. "In 2018, Caroline nominated mum for a show called 'Jane and friends'. "Jane McDonald was mum's favourite singer. She surprised mum at the studio, needless to say there were tears, but they both had a fantastic morning on the 'Brenda and Jane show' and then appearing on the Channel 5 television show afterwards." MORE NEWS In 2023, Brenda was made a Patron of Glan Clwyd Radio in recognition of her 23 years of volunteering and fundraising at a celebration party organised by her colleagues at the station. Speaking about her personality, Leslie said: "Mum was always smiling, had a great sense of fun, and a bubbly personality. She gave so much of herself to her family and community. "She was a remarkably selfless lady who leaves behind so many wonderful memories for all who knew her." Brenda loved meeting stars of stage and screen whenever she had the chance. Her musician son, Steven (Steve), who composed and performed for various shows over the years, always tried to involve Brenda and Joe in the social side of his work. Leslie said: "Through pantos in Rhyl, Carlisle and New Brighton, mum met so many stars. Steve would often leave her while he went to the bar only to return to find mum chatting to Dean Sullivan from Brookside or Su Pollard from Hi-de-Hi! "Mum would be in her element."
