Bangladesh's top election body locks National Identity Cards of Sheikh Hasina, her family members

Dhaka: Bangladesh's top election body has locked the National Identity Cards (NIDs) of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her nine family members. The NIDs of the 10 individuals, including Hasina, were locked through an official letter on February 16, signed by ASM Humayun Kabir, director general of the National Identity Registration Wing at the Election Commission, Daily Star newspaper reported.The other members whose NIDs have been locked are Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed, daughter Saima Wazed, sister Sheikh Rehana Siddiq, Tulip Rizwana Siddiq, Azmina Siddiq, Shaheen Siddiq, Bushra Siddiq, Radwan Mujib Siddiq and Tarique Ahmed Siddiq, state-run BSS news agency reported on Monday.According to officials, NID locking means its information can no longer be corrected, verified or changed. As the locked NIDs are unusable, Hasina and her nine family members will not get any NID-related services.Hasina, 77, has been living in India since August 5 last year, when she fled Bangladesh following large-scale anti-government protests that toppled her 16-year regime.The National Central Bureau (NCB) of Bangladesh Police recently submitted a request to the Interpol, seeking a red notice against 12 individuals, including Hasina.A red notice is used by Interpol to help locate and provisionally arrest individuals pending extradition or similar legal action.Hasina is accused of numerous charges like mass murders and crimes against humanity, enforced disappearances while these cases were being filed with Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal.

Pune: Newly registered voters will receive their Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) within 15 days of their names being added to the electoral roll, under a new fast-track delivery system launched by Election Commission of India (ECI) on June 18, state election officials told TOI. The initiative also applies to voters seeking changes in their details, including address updates and corrections. ECI has deployed a dedicated IT module on the ECINet platform, integrated with India Post's Application Programming Interface, to replace the older manual workflow which would take 30-45 days to deliver voter ID cards. State election officials said new the system enables real-time tracking and SMS alerts at each stage — from generation by the Electoral Registration Officer to doorstep delivery by the postal department. This re-engineered, secure, and efficient digital process aims to improve transparency, reduce delays, and ensure better data security. "All EPIC-related applications will now be processed through ECINet, allowing for faster and more efficient delivery," said an official from the Chief Electoral Officer's office. Lectures hit out at TN govt over CAS benefit
Trichy: Seeking benefits of the career advancement scheme for lectures, the association of university teachers (AUT) expressed disappointment over the state govt for planning to challenge a high court judgment over the issue at the Supreme Court. "On one hand, the Commissioner of Collegiate Education issued a letter on June 9, instructing all regional joint directors to urgently submit updated CAS-related data of eligible teachers by June 10," K Raja of the AUT said in a statement. However, in a "contradictory move", it said, "a communication dated June 16 addressed to A Muraliraj, assistant professor of Mathematics, Urumu Dhanalakshmi College, Trichy, reveals that the govt has chosen to challenge a favourable high court judgment in the Supreme Court by filing a Special Leave Petition (SLP) to deny CAS monetary benefits." Urging the authorities to honour the high court verdict, the association said that the CAS is a statutory right, not a privilege. "Any attempt to delay or deny it adversely affects the morale, dignity, and academic integrity of the teaching community," it added.

4-tier grievance redressal mechanism for Dharavi Redevelopment Project launched
A four-tier grievance redressal mechanism has been launched to deal with the grievances raised by the residents over their eligibility or representation in the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) in Mumbai. The system is meant to give a one-window process to residents for raising and fixing issues without going from office to office. 'We want every resident of Dharavi to benefit from the redevelopment project. If any resident feels that they have been wrongly left out of Annexure-II, or there has been a mistake in the survey, we will ensure their concerns are heard fairly and resolved quickly,' said SVR Srinivas, CEO, DRP. The procedure will start after the Draft Annexure-II is released. The residents will have to raise their objections with the competent authority first. If the issue is still not resolved even after the Final Annexure-II is released, then the complainant may appeal through the four-step process. 'The first stage includes the Appellate Officer (AO), who will look into the grievance and provide a response within a given time frame. If the resident is not satisfied with the AO's ruling, the case can be heard by the Grievance Redressal Committee (GRC), consisting of senior DRP officials who were not part of the original survey process. 'If the case still doesn't get resolved, at level three comes the Appellate Committee, led by an Additional Collector who is also not a subordinate of the DRP CEO. This guarantees administrative independence and fairness in decision-making. Thereafter, if the issue remains unresolved, the residents can complain to the Apex Grievance Redressal Committee (AGRC),' the DRP CEO said. 'The AGRC is a quasi-judicial body. Although it works like a court, the cases are cleared faster because the AGRC was set up specifically for DRP-related issues,' Srinivas added. According to the officials, this process has the purpose of making sure that every citizen who is eligible from Dharavi gets a chance to be incorporated and no valid claim is left behind as the project moves forward.
