Depending on how you look at it, this is either the best or worst time for the Mets to play a three-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies.
On one hand, you could say that a series with the Phils is just what the doctor ordered to snap the Mets out of their current funk.
The Amazins have lost six in a row to the Tampa Bay Rays and Atlanta Braves, which has allowed the Phillies to get on even terms with the Mets (45-30) atop the NL East.
What better opponent to get back on track against than your biggest rival, who just happens to be tied with you for first place right before the midway point of the season?
On the other hand, you could say this is terrible timing, as the Phillies are 8-2 in their last 10, and should be buoyant about their chances of pulling in front of the Mets in the standings.
No matter how you look at it, you'll need to come to terms with the odds, which have the Phillies as a decided favorite for Game 1 of this pivotal series.

Mets vs. Phillies betting preview
The reason that the Phillies are such a decided favorite is because they have Zack Wheeler on the mound opposite Blade Tidwell, who is making just the second start of his career.
A former second-round pick in 2022, Tidwell has pitched to a 4.76 ERA in 13 outings for Triple-A Syracuse this season. He made his MLB debut on May 4 against the Cardinals, allowing six earned runs on nine hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings.
Obviously, having Tidwell start a game of this magnitude is not ideal for the Mets, let alone against Wheeler.

The former Met has been one of the best pitchers in baseball since leaving Queens, but he could be putting together his best season yet.
The 35-year-old has pitched to a 2.76 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in 88 innings. Wheeler's peripheral numbers also stand out, as his 11.25 strikeouts per 9 innings would be a career-best, as would his 2.34 xERA.
Zack Wheeler is averaging over 11 strikeouts per 9 innings this season.

Mets vs. Phillies pick
It may be a bit jarring to see the Phillies close to -200 against a team with the same exact record (and a much better run differential), but this pitching matchup is stacked in the home team's favor.
As long as Wheeler is on point, the Phils should be able to get separation in this game and get home as comfortable winners.
THE PLAY: Phillies -1.5 (+105, FanDuel)

When is Bryce Harper returning to the Philadelphia Phillies lineup after wrist injury? Hopefully sooner than later.
Bryce Harper had a positive outlook on his wrist injury, even if he isn't exactly sure when he'll be back in the Phillies lineup. Harper had a reason to be positive regarding the injury that kept him on the injured list since June 7, the same wrist injury that lingered throughout last season. Harper took 20 dry swings and 20 swings off a tee for the first time since going on the IL. To say the results were encouraging is an understatement. "It felt better than I thought it would," Harper said before the Phillies' showdown against the Mets on Friday. "So I'm happy about that." Harper also fielded groundballs at first base and threw outside 60 to 75 feet, so he and the Phillies appeared to be ramping up a possible return to the lineup. He'll do the same routine Saturday before taking the next steps toward coming back. While neither Harper nor the Phillies has a timetable for a return, he doesn't want to be playing through the pain he felt before going on the injured list. This wrist pain Harper couldn't tolerate, as he was only aggravating it more. "I understand what I can tolerate and what I can't," Harper said. "I've played through pain in my career. I think everybody has at some point. When I can play through the pain, I do. And it got to the point where I just couldn't do it." Colton Hall/MLB Photos via Getty Images "I hope the pain gets out of there. I don't want to play in pain at all," Harper said. "I think that's something we'll see as that comes around. Hopefully, it can get out of there, or stay out of just got to the point where I couldn't do it, and I didn't want to put myself in the position that I wasn't going to play well for my team." Harper hasn't received too many answers on this wrist inflammation, just that he needs to calm it down "as best as he can." Harper also won't need surgery as there are no structural issues with the wrist. Rest is the solution. The "rest" is what Harper can play through and what he can't. "I'm not happy that it came back," Harper said. "I was pain-free for probably 4 ½ months, and then it came back just randomly. So that's always tough. But I think those are things we're going to have to answer once I get going again." "How many swings am I going to take? How many times am I going to throw a ball? And things like that. It's tough not to take those swings or do any of those things. But we're just going to try to figure it out once we get there." Harper does appear to be returning to the Phillies lineup sooner rather than later. That timetable of returning may be significantly shorter in the coming days.

Phillies Announced They Moved Aaron Nola to 60-Day Injured List Amid Roster Move
Phillies Announced They Moved Aaron Nola to 60-Day Injured List Amid Roster Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies lost starting pitcher Aaron Nola for a significant amount of time already, and there is reasonable concern after he suffered a new setback in his ribs. He initially was expected to be back soon, but his issue has prolonged his return to the mount. Advertisement According to a new announcement made by the Phillies on Twitter/X, Nola was dealt even more bad news. They called up Buddy Kennedy and sent down Weston Wilson, meaning the team needed a new 40-man roster spot. To make that spot open, the Phillies put Nola on the 60-day injured list. This decision from the Phillies organization points towards Nola not returning to the club for a while. His timeline originally had him ready to go before the All-Star break. But, a prior setback pushed it passed the All-Star break, and this now could make his absence even longer. Nola could now be out into August, something that cold affect the team's plans at the trade deadline. Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola (27) throws a pitch during the first inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citizens Bank Streicher-Imagn Images While the Phillies have plenty of starting pitchers in the organization, the decision made on Nola is a tough blow for the Phillies. Losing more than half a season of Nola in the rotation will sting, even though he struggled so far this season. Advertisement Nola was 1-7 with a 6.16 ERA before he was placed on the injured list. He started on the 10-day injured list before being transferred to the 15-day injured list. But, after this new announcement, he's now on the 60-day injured list. His progression in recovering from what was initially a foot issue went well, but the rib issue was a huge setback in his return to the mound. It reset his recovery timeline, and provided a different level of pain for Nola to deal with. After this update from the Phillies, the wait is expected to be even longer for Nola's return. In the meantime, Mick Abel and potentially, Andrew Painter, will take over in his absence. Jesús Luzardo Discusses Playing 'Real Baseball' With Phillies
Jesús Luzardo Discusses Playing 'Real Baseball' With Phillies originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As with most arms in the Philadelphia Phillies' rotation, Jesús Luzardo is having a mostly successful 2025 campaign. Advertisement Since being acquired from the Miami Marlins for two prospects, Luzardo has struck out 97 batters in 83.2 innings. He had carried a 2.15 ERA through May 25th before two starts of his went sideways fast. Aside from those hiccups, he's been a valuable addition to the club - and Luzardo isn't taking the change for granted. "I didn't know what to expect coming into a team with such high expectations," Luzardo said during an interview on The Phillies Show. "It's blown me away how welcoming everyone is. How the guys who are 'Superstars' are just really down to earth guys... It's been awesome to be a part of it." Jesús Luzardo started the year off so strong that he was a dark horse Cy Young candidate. While the two blowouts dismissed that, he is still putting together a good Streicher-Imagn Images Originally from Peru, Luzardo went to high school between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, just north of Miami. So while the trade took him much farther from home - albeit with the benefit of traveling back twice a year in divisional series - he's embraced the new culture in Philly. Advertisement "Playing in Miami - it was home for me, so that was great," Luzardo said. "But at the same time, when you're not pitching in front of 40,000 (fans) like you are here every night... That's something you don't really see all the time and it's some of the most fun I've had playing baseball since I was in high school." "This is real baseball. Not a knock on anywhere else that I've been, but you could feel the atmosphere, the home field advantage, the buzz around the city. Going into a game, you just see the streets flooded with Phillies gear. The stadium's packed with everyone walking in. It's a good time." With the season approaching its halfway point, Luzardo is tasked with helping a suddenly short-staffed group of starters maintain a playoff position. And unlike in 2023, when the Marlins had shut him down for Tommy John surgery by the time they made it to the Wild Card, he looks to stay healthy and contribute into the Phils' latest October push.
