Matthew Rubico is making a homecoming in Intramuros as he returns to Lyceum of the Philippines University.
The former NCAA high school standout confirmed that he is leaving De La Salle University in the UAAP after a two-year stay with the Green Archers to rejoin the LPU Pirates in their bid to win an elusive title.
For Rubico, coming back to where it all started for him was a no-brainer as he is confident he can bring out his full potential under the guidance of LPU head coach Gilbert Malabanan.
"Kaya po napili ko bumalik sa LPU kasi nararamdaman ko po na du'n ko po mas maipapakita 'yung talent na natutunan ko sa ilang taong pag-eensayo," Rubico told GMA News Online on Monday.
"Sa tulong po ng mga coaches and mga magiging ka-teammates ko po, feel ko po na matutulungan po nila ako ilabas 'yung full potential ko."
Rubico was a scoring machine in the juniors ranks, once erupting for a 43-point explosion back in Season 98 with the LPU Junior Pirates. His offensive onslaught earned him an inclusion in that edition's Mythical Five alongside Luis Pablo, Seven Gagate, Chris Hubilla, Amiel Acido, and Andy Gemao.
He then decided to bring his act to the UAAP after joining La Salle.
He sat out Season 86, where the Green Archers captured the crown against University of the Philippines. He was lined up in the recent Season 87, but the Taft crew faltered in their title defense after bowing to the Fighting Maroons in the finals.
The young guard, though, feels his future is in LPU. He is now linked up with the Pirates anew as he looks to lead the rebirth of LPU after missing out on the Final Four last year.

San Beda's Amir Aningalan among first football awardees of Collegiate Press Corps

NCAA San Beda University's Amir Aningalan is among the Collegiate Press Corps' first football awardees in its upcoming Awards Night on June 30. Aningalan, the Most Valuable Player of NCAA Seasons 99 and 100, is set to be recognized as the CPC NCAA Football Player of the Year. This is the first time that the group of writers covering the UAAP and NCAA decided to recognize top student-athletes in football. Aside from being back-to-back MVP, Aningalan delivered the much-needed goals of the Red Booters in both finals stints where they went against De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. San Beda, meanwhile, has been a dominant force in NCAA football and has won 26 titles overall. Over in the UAAP, Far Eastern University's Mon Diansuy and Carmela Altiche were named as the CPC Men's and Women's Football Players of the Year. Diansuy, a goalkeeper, was instrumental in FEU's championship run against Ateneo de Manila University where they won over penalties, 1-1 (5-4). Altiche, on the other hand, played a key role in FEU'S 3-2 win over La Salle in the Finals as she not only converted a penalty in the 45+7th minute, but also made a crucial cross to Regine Rebosura for the goal in the 67th minute. Top student-athletes from basketball and volleyball will also be recognized in the Awards Night which will be held at the Discovery Suites Manila. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

NCAA to stage special Mobile Legends tourney as S100 closer

The NCAA will be holding a special tournament featuring Mobile Legends: Bang Bang this coming June and July, just before the 'Grand Old League's' historic Season 100 comes to a close. No less than NCAA management committee chairman and Lyceum of the Philippines representative Hercules Callanta– according to a report by Bea Micaller of GMA Integrated News– confirmed the development, with the official kickoff and first round robin scheduled on June 28 and 29. The second round robin will be staged from July 12 to 13, while the finals round will be held offline and in person from July 25 to July 27 at the Philippine Game Development Expo (PGDX) at the SMX Convention Center. Callanta clarified, however, that the esports tilt is NOT YET part of the NCAA calendar's regular lineup of events– thus making it a 'special tournament' – but emphasized that the league is open to the possibility of its inclusion moving forward. "It's a special event. The aim is to highlight 'yung mga popular games in the Philippines that are not part of the calendar of events ng NCAA pero they're very popular," Callanta told GMA News Online on Monday. He likewise said that the upcoming ML:BB games can be an avenue for the league to gauge how its 10 member schools perceive the event, and to look into the logistical needs should it be formally added to the lineup of sporting events in the future. According to Micaller's report, 'this will not be the first time that NCAA schools are taking part in esports events.' The Collegiate Center for Esports held a Mobile Legends tournament last in 2021, where the 10 NCAA member schools took part. It was an exciting participation for the NCAA representatives as some contingents featured varsity basketball players, such as Letran's Fran Yu and King Caralipio, San Beda's Damie Cuntapay and Yukien Andrada, Perpetual's Jasper Cuevas, and Mapúa's Warren Bonifacio. During the 2021 games, LPU emerged on top and was crowned its inaugural champion. Callanta reportedly said that participation in these pocket tournaments has helped the league in its pursuit of introducing esports this year, which will also likely include Valorant, a first-person hero shooter game, next year. "Actually, through the efforts of Esports Philippines, for the past two or three years already, they conducted competitions in esports among the member schools of the NCAA so sanay na 'yung NCAA sa mga esports competitions kaya lang limited lang." Collegiate Press Corps to honor top student-athletes in annual awards night

The Collegiate Press Corps, made up of sportswriters covering the collegiate beat, will hold its annual awards night on June 30 with top student-athletes from basketball, volleyball, and, for the first time, football getting their recognitions. Leading the honor roll is the Collegiate Men's and Women's Basketball Player of the Year after successful editions of both NCAA Season 100 and UAAP Season 87 while men's and women's mythical teams will also be handed out awards. Athletes from volleyball will also get their spotlight with UAAP Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the Year and NCAA Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the year. In a historic move, the CPC has expanded its recognition to football with top performers in UAAP men's and women's football as well as NCAA men's football getting their due honors. Aside from the players, coaches in both basketball and volleyball will also be acknowledged for steering these young stars to the top. 'We owe it to the student-athletes to continue to glorify their unwavering efforts, with football players in the spotlight this time around. This is our own little way of immortalizing them for what they have done not just for their respective schools, but also for collegiate sports as a whole,' said Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) president John Bryan Ulanday of The Philippine Star. UAAP executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag, sports director Bo Perasol of UAAP Season 87 host University of the Philippines and management committee board chairman Hercules Callanta of NCAA Season 100 host Lyceum of the Philippines University will serve as guest of honor and speakers. —Bea Micaller/JKC, GMA Integrated News
