Trilingual book on Kayan folklore launched in Miri

MIRI (June 12): A Kayan folklore book titled 'Lung Lebui: A Kayan Folktale Collection' written in Kayan, English and Japanese was launched in Miri yesterday.
The 28-page book revolves around Lebui and his wife and features four folk tales well-known to the older Kayan generation. It will be making its way into schools, libraries and universities.
Sarawak Kayan Association president Datuk Dennis Ngau officiated the launch of the book, which is a Curtin University Malaysia community project.
'What makes it even more meaningful to me personally is because this 'Lung Lebui' is my generation's version of today's Netflix to kids.
'There are many versions of Lung Lebui, but I recall one told my father as particularly spine-chilling, especially as we lay down in our makeshift farm-house smack in the middle of the Borneo jungle during farming season,' said the Telang Usan assemblyman when met at the Forum Cultural Centre here.
Dennis hoped with the launch of the book, more Kayans would be encouraged to research and write about their own community, including the publication of more Kayan folklore.
The project was organised by Curtin University Malaysia in collaboration with linguistics lecturers from Kyushu University and the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.
It is a collaborative effort between Dr Roselind Wan from Curtin University Malaysia; Dr Yasuka Fukaya from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and Kyushu University; Yuhki Takeuchi, an independent artist affiliated with Studio Ghibli and Sony Interactive Entertainment; and Usun Anyi, a storyteller from Long Panai, Baram.
Yasuka, who was researching Kelabit language grammar, first met Roselind in Singapore – kick-starting the journey which led to the publication of the book.
According to Curtin University Malaysia's acting pro vice-chancellor and dean of learning and teaching Tang Fu Ee, the book is both a scholarly milestone and heartfelt tribute to Sarawak's rich cultural heritage.
'This is more than a book – it is a bridge between generations, cultures, oral tradition and written legacy. It brings the voices of the Kayan people into the hands of children, educators and readers across the region and beyond.
'It affirms that indigenous stories, which are rich with wisdom, values and imagination, belong not only to the past but also our shared future,' he said.

The day brimmed with energy — food and craft stalls, game booths, open mic sessions, and performances by the English, Mandarin-, Bahasa-, and Tamil-speaking communities. Catechism children came dressed in Laudato Si' inspired costumes crafted from recycled Youth Ministry put on an entertaining show with cultural dances, wushu demonstrations, songs, and band performances. Parishioners joined in spontaneous dancing, led by Fr Thomas himself, filling the hall with warmth and joy. The event closed with full hearts, new friendships, happy tummies, and arms full of the month, families deepened their communication, discovered joy in family love, engaged in friendly competition, and prayed together — especially the Rosary — for the sanctification of families. The Family Month concluded with a sunset Mass, a fitting end to a meaningful and memorable celebration. In his closing remarks, Fr Thomas shared, 'We give thanks to God for all the blessings He has bestowed on us this Family Month. Let us carry on as families filled with love for one another.' Sinner and singer Bocelli strike up partnership for new single

LONDON: World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has formed a new doubles partnership but the duo will be battling for chart success rather than Grand Slam titles after the Italian released a single with compatriot and opera tenor Andrea Bocelli today. The three-time Grand Slam champion Sinner promoted the song titled 'Polvere e Gloria' or 'Dust and Glory' on Instagram. The video features footage from the pair's childhoods and more recent clips of the singer and Sinner, clutching a racket and tennis ball, in front of a piano in Bocelli's home in Tuscany. Sinner's speeches form part of the song, which is in Italian and English, with Bocelli in full flow. K-pop singer Ju Hak-nyeon denies paying for sex

South Korean singer Ju Hak-nyeon was reported to have had a personal meeting with a Japanese adult film actress-turned-influencer. The apology on June 19 came after he was booted from K-pop boy band The Boyz on June 18. His agency One Hundred Label had announced on June 16 that the 26-year-old would be taking a break for personal reasons, without providing details. A Japanese media outlet then reported that Ju had a personal meeting with a Japanese adult film actress-turned-influencer, who is 11 years his senior, in Tokyo. The outlet added that he had allegedly paid for sex with the woman. One Hundred Label announced on June 18 that Ju will leave The Boyz and that his exclusive contract with the agency has been terminated. On June 19, Ju uploaded a handwritten letter on social media, in which he apologised for his behaviour. He admitted that he had a drink with an actress, along with acquaintances, in May. But he said he did not pay for sex, insisting that he had not committed any illegal acts. The Boyz, originally a 12-man act, debuted in 2017 with the EP The First. One member, Hwall, departed in October 2019 and the band released their first studio album, Reveal, in 2020. They launched their third studio album, Unexpected , in March.
