Lee, Starmer call for Korea-UK FTA upgrade

Korea Herald3 days ago

KANANASKIS, Canada -- President Lee Jae Myung and his UK counterpart Keir Starmer recognized a need to upgrade the bilateral free trade agreement
Lee told UK Prime Minister Starmer that he believed the ongoing negotiation over the Korea-UK FTA "should make some progress," in response to Starmer's remarks that the modernization of the Korea-UK FTA is a matter associated with stronger bilateral ties.
The two countries' free trade pact has been in effect since 2021 after the UK's departure from the European Union, which was already a free trade partner of South Korea. Talks to renegotiate the bilateral trade pact has been ongoing since 2023, with the latest fourth round of negotiations having taken place in March.
The meeting was held on the margins of the Group of Seven summit at the Kananaskis village in Alberta Canada.

(arin@ Spy chief nominee grilled over his perceptions of North Korea Lee Jong-seok, the nominee to be the director of the National Intelligence Service, faced scrutiny over his past acquaintance with a former deputy governor convicted over illegal cash transfers to North Korea at his confirmation hearing Thursday. At the hearing, Lee was asked about his past ties to former Gyeonggi Province Deputy Gov. Lee Hwa-young, who served when President Lee Jae Myung was governor of the province. The former deputy gov. was sentenced to 7 years and 8 months in prison for a 2019-20 scheme to transfer funds to the North. Prosecutors allege that the president, when he was governor, used the undergarment maker Ssangbangwool to send $8 million to North Korea. Lee has consistently denied any wrongdoing or involvement in the case. The NIS director nominee and the former deputy governor had worked together at the inter-Korean peace committee at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office since 2018. The nominee said he knew the former deputy governor strictly in a professional capacity and that he had no knowledge of the scheme at all. When asked about his past public remarks opposing the introduction of THAAD, the US antiballistic missile defense system and GSOMIA, the intelligence-sharing framework with Japan, the nominee said he believes that those were "things that are already agreed upon and should be complied with." Lee said that the foundation of South Korea's security is its alliance with the US. "That is the stance of the Lee Jae Myung administration, and I believe the same," he said. In response to The Korea Herald's question after the confirmation hearing, Lee said that he would be open to meeting with the bereaved family of a South Korean fisheries official who was shot dead by North Korean troops at sea in September 2020. "I have not yet looked into the matter, but I would consider it," the nominee said. In Wednesday's prehearing brief, seen exclusively by The Korea Herald, Lee said if he is appointed as the director, he would "look into" the shooting murder of the South Korean official. He was responding to a lawmaker's question about his stance on the case. In 2022, the NIS filed a criminal complaint against its former director Park Jie-won, who is now a Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker, for allegedly destroying the spy agency's confidential materials related to the South Korean official's death. Park denies all allegations. The criminal trial for Park and other high-level officials at the time is ongoing. In the prehearing brief, Lee also denied the accusations that he was lenient toward North Korea. "I absolutely cannot agree with the claims that I am pro-North Korea only because I have studied North Korea and the Korean Peninsula in depth," he said. Lee served as minister of inter-Korean affairs under the late former liberal President Roh Moo-hyun in 2006.

NK fires multiple rocket launcher shells

North Korea fired some 10 artillery shells from its multiple rocket launchers in the morning, South Korea's military said Thursday. 'Our military detected 10 artillery shells from multiple rocket launcher systems that were fired from the Sunan area in North Korea, near Pyongyang, towards the northwest at around 10 a.m.,' the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff said. The Yellow Sea lies northwest of Sunan. The JCS said it had detected signs of the launches in advance and was prepared to respond. South Korean and US intelligence authorities are conducting an analysis of the latest weapon test, the JCS said. While the JCS usually immediately alerts the press about North Korea's test-firing of missiles, it said the delay in Thursday's announcement was due to a lack of urgency. 'North Korea constantly fires artillery shells from multiple rocket launchers, and Thursday's launch was not a ballistic missile.' While the JCS and the North both have yet to announce whether the artillery shells fired Thursday were from 240 mm or 600 mm multiple rocket launchers, observers projected it to be the former. North Korea announced last year that it would deploy an upgraded 240 mm multiple rocket launcher to its military starting that year. The weapon system is known to target the South's broader capital area. Thursday's test-firing closely followed a trilateral aerial exercise jointly conducted by South Korea, the US and Japan on Wednesday, to strengthen security cooperation. It marked the first of such exercises to take place after the launch of the Lee Jae Myung administration.

Naver shares surge on AI optimism, hit 52-week high

Naver shares surged for the second consecutive session on Thursday, buoyed by investor optimism over the Lee Jae Myung administration's commitment to nurturing the domestic artificial intelligence sector. The internet giant closed at 252,000 won ($182.47) on the main bourse Kospi, up 3.49 percent from the previous session. This followed a nearly 18 percent on Wednesday, marking a two-day rally that has captured market attention. It is the first time Naver shares have topped 250,000 won since Aug. 19, 2022, when it traded at 251,000 won. During early trading Thursday, Naver briefly touched 259,000 won, setting a new 52-week high. The company's market capitalization ranking also rose, climbing from 11th to 8th on the Kospi in just two trading days, overtaking Samsung Electronics preferred shares, Kia and Doosan Enerbility. Investor sentiment has been further buoyed by the appointment of Ha Jung-woo, head of Naver's Future AI Center, to the newly established post of senior presidential secretary for AI and future technology planning. His appointment is seen as a strategic move aligning with the government's AI ambitions. President Lee has pledged to build a national large language model to make AI accessible to all citizens, raising expectations for Naver's participation in the landmark project. Global investment banks have reinforced this momentum. On Tuesday, JPMorgan raised its target price for Naver from 250,000 won to 270,000 won, while maintaining its 'overweight' rating. Citigroup followed suit Thursday, naming Naver its top pick among Korean internet platform stocks and lifting its target price from 270,000 won to 300,000 won. 'Foreign investors turned net buyers after JPMorgan raised its investment rating on Naver to 'overweight,' citing potential benefits from the Korean government's 100 trillion won AI investment plan and the appointment of a new senior secretary for AI who previously served at the IT giant,' said Lee Kyung-min, an analyst from Daishin Securities. Meanwhile, shares of Naver's crosstown rival Kakao also rallied as a potential beneficiary of AI policies. Kakao closed at 60,400 won, up 9.42 percent from the previous session. During the day, the stock hit a 52-week high of 61,800 won.
