Ex-New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley recalls his 'Welcome to the NFL' moment
Former New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley went on a tear in 2024, leading an extension with the Philadelphia Eagles that makes him the highest-paid NFL running back in history. He set a new single-season record (including the playoffs) for most rushing yards with 2,054 on the way to leading the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory.
Everything about Barkley seemed superhuman last season, but when he sat down with Sean Evans on the show "Hot Ones," Barkley proved he is, indeed, human.
One of the ways they proved he is human is with the increasingly spicy hot wings Barkley ate as Evans asked him questions. Two kinds of wings in particular had Barkley needing reprieve: "Da Bomb" wings, Scoville level of 136,000, and "The Last Dab Xperience" wings that have a Scoville level of 2,693,000.
The second thing they found that can stop Barkley is one he revealed during the interview. He recalled his "Welcome to the NFL" moment in 2018, when he engaged with Hall of Fame linebacker Julius Peppers.
Peppers was in his final season with the Carolina Panthers, Year 17, and he had Barkley by the shoulder pads after a play. Barkley had earned the nickname "SaQuads" for his squatting ability, but the rookie could not break free of Peppers' grasp.
"That's when I realized that there's a difference between, like, grown men strength and, like, being strong in the weight room," he said, via FOX Sports.
"Yeah, that was probably, like, my most humbling moment of my life. Not just on the football field, but as a man, too. Because in that moment, I definitely needed help. I'm strong, but he's like, super strong."
Every rookie in the NFL has a moment like this. They've spent their entire lives being told they're the best at what they do, that they're going to go far in football, and that no one can take them down. But when they get to the NFL, they join a league of grown men who were raised the same way.
Rookies become the low men on the totem pole, and every single one of them has a moment that humbles them and brings them back to the ground.
For Saquon Barkley, that moment came at the hands of Julius Peppers.

We have spoken at length all offseason about the Washington Commanders' offensive line and its ability to protect Jayden Daniels. Advertisement Coming off a superb rookie season, the only blight on Daniels was the 47 sacks he took, which was the sixth-most in the league. Given Jayden's slender build, that is just asking for the injury bug to come and sink its teeth into him. But this offseason, general manager Adam Peters traded for five-time Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil to help fortify Daniels' protection. The thought being that keeping Jayden upright will lead to the Commanders' offense running like a well-oiled machine en route to what the franchise hopes is a Super Bowl win. However, not everyone is convinced that the front five will protect Jayden, and one of those is ESPN's Mike Clay. Advertisement In his 2025 projections, Clay has Daniels being sacked 43 times, just four shy of last season - that's nightmare fuel, my friends. Granted, Clay also projects Daniels to have 146 rushing attempts for 810 yards and seven touchdowns, which is nearly identical to his numbers from 2024. Still, those sack projections scare us as we don't have to look too far back at Andrew Luck to see the pile-on effect of taking hits regularly. Yes, we know it is a projection, and Daniels' sack numbers could plummet in Year 2, and in truth, if the Commanders are to get to where they want to go in 2025, they will have to. There are a lot of recognizable names in the quarterback room this season, but Wilson is expected to lead the charge when the Giants make it to Week 1. Some might suggest that Wilson doesn't have much to prove at this stage of his career. He's accomplished most things that not every quarterback can say they have. However, Winston recently revealed to the media that's not the case. Not the case for Wilson—not the case for him. "I believe that we all have something to prove to ourselves," Winston told reporters. The backup quarterback then shared a unique tidbit about Wilson's slightly superstitious approach to his first season with the New York Giants. The Giants likely view the 36-year-old as a one-year rental, but they are invested in him as a win-now presence. Wilson certainly seems motivated to prove he can still win at a high level.
