Auto index soars 25% from April low; Hero Moto, TaMo gain up to 6% on Thurs

Shares of automobiles companies continued their upward trajectory with the BSE Auto index gaining over 2 per cent on the BSE in Thursday's intra-day trade on positive management commentaries and expectations of stable growth.
At 02:47 PM; the BSE Auto index, the second largest gainer among sectoral indices, was up 2 per cent, as compared to 1.5 per cent rise in the BSE Sensex. The auto index gained 2.2 per cent at the day's high of 53,486 in intra-day trade.
Hero MotoCorp, Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, TVS Motor Company and Ashok Leyland from the index were up in the range of 2 per cent to 6 per cent. The non-index stocks, SML Isuzu and Force Motors rallied 9 per cent and 7 per cent, respectively.
In the past one week, the BSE Auto index has outperformed the market by surging 9 per cent, as compared to 3.8 per cent rise in the BSE Sensex. The auto index has recovered 25 per cent from its previous month low of 42,834.11 touched on April 7, 2025.
Among individual stocks from the index, Hero MotoCorp has rallied 6 per cent to ₹4,323.25 in intra-day trade as analysts expect recovery in rural demand to be positive for the company, given its robust network.
Looking ahead, the management of Hero MotoCorp said they remain optimistic about the near‐to‐mid‐term outlook as key macroeconomic indicators, including revised income tax slabs, repo rate cuts, a strengthening rural economy, and a favourable monsoon forecast, are expected to support industry growth.
On the back of tailwinds such as favourable monsoon forecast, low inflation and robust marriage season, Hero MotoCorp expects two-wheeler industry to grow at 6-7 per cent in FY26. However, the company expects to outperform industry growth, supported by recovery in rural demand aiding in market share gains in the entry-level segment (Q4FY25 market share at 65 per cent), positive response to new model launches (two new ones in July 2025). Channel inventory stands at normalized levels of 4-5 weeks with the company anticipating further increase before the festival period.
Analysts at Elara Capital reiterated 'Accumulate' rating on Hero MotoCorp with a target price of ₹4,558 based on 16x June 2027E P/E and ~₹173 is ascribed to the Ather stake, led by appreciation in Ather valuation and roll forward to June 2027E.
Meanwhile, Tata Motors said tariffs and related geo-political actions are making the operating environment uncertain and challenging. The global premium luxury segment and Indian domestic markets are expected to weather this relatively better. With most macroeconomic indicators on track, improved fleet utilization and stable sentiment index, the company anticipates sustained growth despite global headwinds for commercial vehicles (CV) segment.
On passenger vehicles (PV) segment, Tata Motors said overall demand growth will be shaped by macroeconomic factors such as consumption growth, inflation, infrastructure spending and global geopolitics. However, industry momentum is expected to be driven by continued innovation in line with evolving customer preferences. SUVs, CNG, and EVs will remain key growth drivers, fueling the industry's expansion.
Share price of Tata Motors was up 4 per cent at ₹727 on the BSE in intra-day trade today. The stock has bounced back 33 per cent from its previous month low of ₹542.55 on April 7, 2025.
Last week, India and the United Kingdom (UK) signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). According to media reports, India will cut its automotive tariffs to 10 per cent from its current level of more than 100 per cent.
Most automotive manufacturing plants in the UK are of premium and luxury brands, such as Bentley, BMW, Rolls-Royce, and Aston Martin, said analysts at BNP Paribas India. While among them, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) could be a key beneficiary, the brokerage firm notes that one of its key models, Defender, is not manufactured in the UK. Also, JLR already uses its India based assembly plant for several models to enjoy the lower duty.
Kunal Vora, Head of India Equity Research at BNP Paribas India said trade deal optimism turns risk-on sentiments for emerging markets. The foreign institutional investors (FIIs) turned positive on most of the emerging markets as news flow on trade and tariffs improved. Markets have reacted positively to the tariff pause, the US-UK trade deal and rollback of recent tariffs between US-China.

When Dr Radhakrishnan gave away degrees under tent at IIT-Kanpur

Lucknow: When RBI governor, Sanjay Malhotra, returns to his alma mater, IIT-Kanpur, on June 23 to address the premier institute's 58th convocation at its sprawling auditorium, the event will mark the institute's memorable journey from its humble beginnings. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The institute's first convocation was held under a tent in 1965 and addressed by the then President of India, . The event saw 66 members of the institute's first graduating class conferred the BTech degrees. Dr PK Kelkar, founder director of IIT-K, presided over the function and gave a report on the growth and prospects of the institute. Among the many speeches on the occasion, Kelkar's was the most memorable. IIT-K has come a long way since its inception in 1959. From its humble beginnings in a borrowed room at Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, it has grown to become a premier institution, now situated on a sprawling 420-hectare campus located on the Grand Trunk Road, around 15km west of Kanpur city. Land for the institute was gifted by the govt of Uttar Pradesh in 1960 and, by March 1963, it had shifted to its current location. Today, IIT-Kanpur is renowned for its academic excellence, research, and innovation. A visit to the campus back then would have revealed a serene landscape featuring standing crops, acacia woods, a picturesque line of stately mango trees, flocks of peafowl roaming freely, and a quintessential Indian countryside scene. This idyllic setting made a perfect blend of natural beauty and rustic charm. The campus is designed with a focus on environmental freedom, featuring halls of residence, faculty and staff houses, and community buildings. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now All these are strategically arranged around the central academic area to facilitate flexibility in movement and easy communication. The institute's inaugural batch, the Class of 65, produced some illustrious technocrats and business honchos in the country like Abhay Bhushan, a computer scientist who has been a major contributor to the development of the internet TCP/IP architecture and is the author of the File Transfer Protocol, Suresh Pandey (former director, Bokaro Steel Plant), and Vinay Kumar Modi (Director of Modi Industries Limited). The batch members recall how they departed from the campus in May 1965 and were waiting to hear when the convocation would be held. Finally, they received invitations by India Post. By then many batchmates had left for studies abroad and some of the ones in India could not attend because of work or personal issues. A few of them, though, did make it to Kanpur to receive their degrees. IIT-K made arrangements for them to be picked up at the railway station and they were lodged at the Visitors' Hostel. Abhay Bhushan, chairman of Asquare Inc and part of IIT-K's 1965 batch, reminisces: "The convocation was planned for the afternoon, from 3pm to 5.30pm. We, the graduating students, were asked to arrive by 1.30pm to collect our gowns and caps and to get instructions on walking in the procession. In all, 67 BTech and 5 PhD degrees were awarded." "During the convocation, several speeches were given. Of note was Dr Kelkar's speech where he recalled what we, as the pioneer batch, had been through and how we were better educated to handle whatever our profession and life may have to offer. He said that the faith that they have shown in the future of the institute has been a real source of inspiration," Bhushan said. The Class of 1965 gifted IIT-K Rs 2.5 crore during its Diamond Jubilee Reunion celebrations in March. The batch pledged this amount towards creating a "Pioneering Research and Innovation Award" at the institute. Talking to TOI, the institute's present director, Professor Manindra Agrawal, said: "This year, we are celebrating the 58th convocation. Over the years, the institute has come a long way in contributing to the nation's technology and innovation landscape, as well as shaping bright minds. As an alumnus myself, every convocation here is nostalgic."

ICICI sought to acquire HDFC, reveals chairman Deepak Parekh

Former HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh and ICICI Bank chief Chanda Kochhar MUMBAI: Former HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh, in a candid disclosure, said that then ICICI Bank chief Chanda Kochhar had proposed a merger between the two lenders - well before HDFC's eventual reverse merger with its banking subsidiary. During an interaction with Kochhar on her channel, Parekh said: "I remember you talking to me once. I remember it very clearly. It's never been talked about in public, but I'm willing to share it now. You said that ICICI started HDFC. 'Why don't you come back home?' That was your offer." Parekh said he declined the offer, saying "it won't be fair" or "proper with our name and the bank and all". Parekh said the eventual merger with HDFC Bank, completed in July 2023, was driven mainly by regulatory pressure. RBI had classified NBFCs like HDFC, then holding assets over Rs 5 lakh crore, as systemically important, breaching the Rs 50,000-crore threshold. "RBI supported us and they pushed us into it to some extent and they helped us," he said. However, he added that there were "no concessions, no relief, no time, nothing". Describing the day the merger concluded, Parekh called it "a sad day and a happy day". He said, "It's good for the institution. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 180k traders turn to IC Markets for optimum CFD trading conditions IC Markets Sign Up Undo It's good for the country to have large banks. Look at how large Chinese banks are. We have to be bigger, larger in India." Parekh believes that Indian banks must grow through acquisitions to become stronger in future. On broader economic concerns, Parekh cited persistent uncertainty in supply chains, trade policy, and export conditions as top CEO concerns. Calling insurance the "least understood product", Parekh criticised "mis-selling by banks" driven by high upfront commissions. After TCS, AP govt allots land to Cognizant in Vizag

Vijayawada: Continuing its aggressive incentive policy stand, Andhra Pradesh govt has decided to allot land to another IT major, Cognizant Technology Solutions , at 99 paisa per acre in Visakhapatnam. The 21.31 acres will be allotted at Kapuluppada area in the city. The State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB), in its recent meeting, approved the proposal of Cognizant to invest Rs 1,583 crore in its new ITES/IT campus. The state govt earlier allotted about 21 acres to another IT services major, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), at 99 paisa per acre. The new campus of TCS is likely to be launched by the end of July. TCS has promised to provide 12,000 jobs. IT minister Nara Lokesh earlier announced that the govt is ready to give land to top IT companies at the same price as that of TCS if they come up with a promise of creating employment opportunities for local youth. "The state govt is committed to turn Visakhapatnam into the IT capital of Andhra Pradesh and a new investment destination for companies. To kick off the investment cycle rolling, a trigger is needed, and TCS will be that moment," Lokesh said earlier, justifying the allotment of land at almost free of cost to TCS. He said Tata Motors went to Gujarat after Narendra Modi, the then chief minister of Gujarat, offered land at 99 paisa per acre. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo "After Tata Motors landed in Gujarat, an entire ecosystem of automobile industry was created," said Lokesh. The discussions with Cognizant were initiated during the World Economic Forum summit in Davos. According to sources, Cognizant is planning its investment in three phases. The company has set a target of March 2029 for commencement of commercial operations. The project will be 100% self-funded. Together, TCS and Cognizant will bring 20,000 IT jobs to Visakhapatnam. Apart from direct employment, every job in the IT sector is expected to create indirect employment for four people. Besides TCS and Cognizant, Google is also planning to set shop in Visakhapatnam, which, according to sources, will be another major turning point in creating a whole ecosystem in new and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and data centres.
