Murderbot – Season 1 Episode 4 Recap & Review
Escape Velocity Protocol
Episode 4 of Murderbot begins with us back at Corporation Rim at the Threshold Pass in the Fabrication Center. This is where the SecUnits are made, with humans pushed way beyond their capabilities. Of course, anybody who's worked to the bone and not their sharpest are prone to make mistakes, and every part of this process is littered with issues or problems.
It's a nice way of showing off the entire production process, throwing shade at factories that make products for thousands and pay their workers pittances. Nice work, Apple!
We're then blasted back to the present where MurderBot is dragged up the hallway by its assailant. Dumped on a table, MurderBot bides its time before suddenly singing the Sanctuary Moon theme. It fights off the attacker after, but unfortunately not before it gets the Combat Override Module locked in.
Things look hopeless, until Dr Mensah arrives with a mining drill and manages to take out the attacker. As they stumble off the ship, MurderBot is in and out of consciousness, seeing himself on the Sanctuary Moon set and stumbling through the hallways too.
Back at the ship, the others are not happy when they find out Pin-wee was ordered back onto the chopper by Mensah. Ratthi grabs a gun and heads out, soon to be joined by the others, as they prepare to fight back. Ratthi hits himself in the head and isn't much help, while Pin-wee manages to drop the ship right on the robot attacker, eventually squashing it.
Unfortunately, the damage has been done. The Combat Override Module looks set to switch on and set its sights on them all. Murderbot decides to sacrifice itself though, turning the gun on itself and firing.
The Episode Review
So Murderbot returns this week with an action-packed episode, one that dives into the morals of this bot and how strangely human it actually is. We still don't know who or what this attacker is and why it's so interested in overriding Murderbot's programming, but I'm sure we'll find out later in the series.
The episode works well to add in some drama and comedy in equal measure, interwoven around the story that zips by at a frantic pace.
The storyline is nicely structured as a result, and the ending certainly leaves everything wide open for the next episode.

With the hit Apple TV Plus show The Buccaneers returning for a second season, the cast has addressed fan comparisons to other hit period dramas like Bridgerton The Victorian-era series, based on Edith Wharton's unfinished novel, follows a group of New York women in the 1870s sent to London to find husbands and high status. As Conchita (Alisha Boe), Lizzy (Aubri Ibrag), Mabel (Josie Totah), Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) and Nan (Kristine Froseth) arrive on British shores, they encounter heartache, chaotic love triangles and scandals that could bring ruin to their families. Set to a modern soundtrack and centred around themes of female empowerment, it joins a growing ilk of period dramas with a 21st-century twist, the most widely known of which is no doubt Netflix's Bridgerton. Although the shows are regularly compared by viewers across social media, according to Mabel star Josie Totah, there's plenty to The Buccaneers that sets it apart from the crowd, as she told Metro. 'I love Bridgerton, I love Nichola Coughlan, but I think what our show does so well is it looks and feels like the perfect line between what feels period and also what's relatable to today. We do have love story scenes, but it's not super 'fantasy-y'. It feels like these people are people you know and they feel reachable, and you're not watching a storybook just put on TV,' the actor explained. In The Buccaneers, Mabel is a lesbian battling against societal norms, navigating an illicit relationship with a woman and still showing up for their friends in their times of need – the perfect example of a multi-layered character. 'This period is beautiful, but it's also tangible and I think our relationships are really palpable and these characters are relatable and that's what separates it,' she concluded. Although the first season offered plenty of steamy scenes for viewers to sink their teeth into, which only heightened its comparisons to the Netflix series, the stars believe there could be a lot more action. Despite already being convinced by the show, the second season still managed to take me by surprise by never going where I expected it to. Instead, the show flies off in a completely different, often more refreshing, direction. It's clear in this second season that the show takes the responsibility of portraying both the joy and hardships that women faced in this period seriously. The Buccaneers allows those moments of solidarity and the celebration of womanhood in all of its glory to shine while still giving the space and depth to explore the tougher aspects, always ending on a hopeful note. 'I wish we had more steamy scenes,' Alisha admitted, joking that they'll report this request to 'Apple'. As for the show's ability to tell a nuanced story, it's a sentiment echoed by her co-star Imogen Waterhouse, who praised the storylines for their 'groundedness' and 'relatability'. She plays Nan's sister Jinny, who is forced to flee her abusive husband Lord Seadown (Barney Fishwick) with Nan's lover Guy (Matthew Broome) and her baby in tow. In season two, we see the fallout of this decision as Jinny and Matthew set up a new incognito life in Italy. As Imogen explained, there's plenty more to come for this plotline. '[In season one Seadown] was looking for a wife he could control… and you see it come to a boiling point in season two. 'Even though she's made this escape, it doesn't mean 'oh, everything's fine, it's over.' Actually, there is still something that really draws her back to him because, without him, she has no power, and she's in hiding forever. 'It's really hard even in these times for women to leave. Especially in the Victorian times, legally they couldn't, so it adds a layer.' As for what lies in store for Nan and Guy, right from the get-go, they are separated by an entire ocean, meaning they have 'less screentime together' than last season. How exactly things will pan out, however, remains to be seen. More Trending For now, the cast remains endlessly grateful to the loyal fanbase, many of whom enjoy making fan edits on TikTok with 8,000 videos and counting under the hashtag. 'I doomscroll on TikTok and sometimes it'll pop up and it's a bit strange,' Alisha said, 'When you make a show, you hope at least someone watches it cause that's six months of your life.' As Josie joked: 'I think it's only big on TikTok, I think that's where it shines.' The Buccaneers season one is available to stream on TikTok. Has Murderbot been renewed for Season 2? Here's what we know:
Renewed Or Cancelled? Murderbot is the latest comedic sci-fi on Apple, successfully adapting the book sporting the same name and adding 10 highly enjoyable and humorous episodes to boot. So after watching it in its entirety, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here's what we know: What is Murderbot about? Based on the award-winning, best-selling series by Martha Wells, Murderbot follows a rogue security unit that's self-hacked itself free of company restraints, only to find itself horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable clients. Played by Skarsgård, Murderbot is forced to hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe. At the time of writing, Murderbot has not been renewed for season 2. Generally Apple would gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly. Other times, it can take months before a decision over a show's future is made. So far, Murderbot has had a really good reaction from critics and audiences alike, with many commenting (including ourselves) that the plot and humour both work really well together. Given the way this show is set up, we're predicting that this will be renewed for a second season. The series does have plenty of potential and we know that the series has been highly popular too, with it nestling within the top 20 chart on IMDB's popularity meter, along with simple and easily digestible episodes. However, we could be completely wrong, given Apple don't always renew every show, so take our prediction with a pinch of salt! What we know about season 2 so far: Barely anything is known about season 2 at this point as Apple haven't officially renewed this one. Should it be renewed, we have some big questions. What will happen to Murderbot and the Preservation Society? Will we see a return of the same characters as before? And will Murderbot ever watch another show other than Sanctuary Moon? It seems unlikely but if this series is renewed, we'd expect it to be green-lit with another 10 episode order, and bring back a lot of the old cast too. Murderbot – Season 1 Episode 7 Recap & Review
Complementary Species Episode 7 of Murderbot begins with us at Port Freecommerce, one month earlier. It's the eve of the Chatterjee memorial lecture and Gurathin immediately lowers the mood when he admits that he was a corporation spy. His target is Mensah and he's sick of lying to everyone. He even wants to end his life. This is why he moved to the Preservation Alliance, to get away from everything. Outside, Gurathin admits that he's nervous about this new expedition and he's not sure it's a god idea. He's also nervous about the SecUnit joining them. Back in the present, the group are still reeling after LeeBeeBee's death. Murderbot is adamant that they need to move, and he tries a softer approach than his initial stern hook, which actually works surprisingly well. The group leave the base, jumping onboard the hopper, but they're still not sure whether they can trust Murderbot or not. As they weigh up their options, so too does our titular character. It wonders whether to just leave them to it, or even sit around and watch Sanctuary Moon until its battery runs out. Eventually both sides hash out their issues, with Mensah explaining that she looks at Murderbot as someone trying to help. She wants it to have that same feeling and look at them favourably, but their chat is interrupted. Hostile creatures surround the hopper, but they're not actually fighting, they're mating. Both Gurathin and Murderbot contemplate whether to just electrify the hull, but the humans refuse. Unfortunately, the creatures also leave eggs all over the ship. There are bigger problems though, when another SecUnit shows up and jams the assessment threat for our Murderbot. When the hostile SecUnit destroys some of the eggs, one of the creatures arrives and absolutely obliterates it, ripping its head off. Thankfully it doesn't attack Preservation Society, who stand and watch as the centipede-esque creature grabs the eggs and heads underground. Gurathin is not in a good state though, and as he collapses on the ground, the group decide to take him back to the habitat, despite the risks and the potential hostiles crawling round the area. The Episode Review Murderbot returns with another good episode this week, zeroing in on the threat the group are facing and presenting this hostile SecUnit as another of the company's minions looking to take the group down. There's some pretty good questions about morality in here too, namely that of the two creatures mating and whether to kill them or not. While the humans all have empathy and decide this isn't a good idea, the androids – namely Murderbot and Gurathin – both think they should kill them. It's a nice way of presenting the difference in machine and human thinking, and it works well to add a slightly more dramatic side to what's otherwise only really been explored through the lens of comedy.
