China in bid to challenge giant SpaceX by deploying maglev rocket launch pad by 2028

In a bid to disrupt the United States' long-held dominance in space exploration, China is quietly advancing a radical new rocket launch system – powered not by roaring engines but by electromagnetic force – that could propel satellites into orbit with unprecedented speed and efficiency.

At the heart of the ambitious project is
Galactic Energy , a private aerospace company that plans to debut the world's first electromagnetic rocket launch pad by 2028, a project that could redraw the competitive lines of the global space industry.
Developed in partnership with state-backed research institutes in Sichuan province in southwestern China, the system uses superconducting magnets to silently accelerate rockets to supersonic speeds before ignition, a process often compared to launching a maglev train vertically.

The Ziyang government in Sichuan and the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) is testing China's first electromagnetic launch verification platform with the ambitious goal of launching in three years, according to a report by Sichuan Radio and Television last week.
The platform would accelerate rockets to speeds above Mach 1 as rockets burn most fuel at the beginning of a flight, and offers a future in which launches could become as routine as high-speed rail departures.
The technology could double payload capacity and lower the launch cost, said Li Ping, president of the Ziyang Commercial Space Launch Technology Research Institute. Li said the launch track would not require the maintenance needed for traditional launch pads, enabling more frequent launches.

If successful, it could offer China the critical edge it seeks to challenge American giants such as SpaceX.

Trump extends deadline for TikTok sale by 90 days

Trump extends deadline for TikTok sale by 90 days TikTok offices in Culver City, California. File photo: Reuters US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he had given social media platform TikTok another 90 days to find a non-Chinese buyer or be banned in the United States. "I've just signed the Executive Order extending the Deadline for the TikTok closing for 90 days [September 17, 2025]," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, putting off the ban for the third time. A federal law requiring TikTok's sale or ban on national security grounds was due to take effect the day before Trump's January inauguration. The Republican, whose 2024 election campaign relied heavily on social media, has previously said he is fond of the video-sharing app. "I have a little warm spot in my heart for TikTok," Trump said in an NBC News interview in early May. "If it needs an extension, I would be willing to give it an extension." TikTok on Thursday welcomed Trump's decision. "We are grateful for President Trump's leadership and support in ensuring that TikTok continues to be available for more than 170 million American users," the platform said in a statement. (AFP)

OpenAI wins US$200mn US defense contract

OpenAI wins US$200mn US defense contract OpenAI is tasked with developing AI prototypes to address "national security challenges." Photo: Reuters ChatGPT maker OpenAI was awarded a US$200 million contract to provide the US Defense Department with artificial intelligence tools, the Pentagon said in a statement on Monday. "Under this award, the performer will develop prototype frontier AI capabilities to address critical national security challenges in both warfighting and enterprise domains," the Pentagon said. The work will be primarily performed in and near Washington with an estimated completion date of July 2026, the Pentagon said. OpenAI said last week that its annualised revenue run rate surged to US$10 billion as of June, positioning the company to hit its full-year target amid booming AI adoption. OpenAI said in March it would raise up to US$40 billion in a new funding round led by SoftBank Group at a US$300 billion valuation. OpenAI had 500 million weekly active users as of the end of March. The White House's Office of Management and Budget released new guidance in April directing federal agencies to ensure that the government and "the public benefit from a competitive American AI marketplace." The guidance had exempted national security and defense systems. (Reuters)

Social media, e-commerce platform Xiaohongshu – or RedNote in English – sets up office in Hong Kong

Chinese social network and e-commerce platform Xiaohongshu, known in English as RedNote, has set up an office in Hong Kong – its first outside mainland China. Finance chief Paul Chan officiated at an opening ceremony on Saturday, saying the new office would 'enhance the visibility of Hong Kong's tourism, retail, dining and creative industries,' according to a government press release. Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK) said the move would help ensure enhanced services for cross-border users and brands. 'As a leading lifestyle community from China, Xiaohongshu's presence will foster creative collaboration among local content creators, brands and organisations, and promote East-meets-West cultural exchanges and content marketing development among Hong Kong, the Mainland and the global markets,' InvestHK's Director-General of Investment Promotion Alpha Lau said. Founded in 2013, Xiaohongshu – which literally means 'little red book' – allows its young user base to share fashion, beauty, travel, food, and other tips as a hub for consumption decision-making. It is particularly popular among affluent Gen Z users in urban China, according to Bloomberg. It was thrust into the international spotlight in January, gaining an influx of American users amid fears that the US would shut down the popular TikTok video app, owned by Chinese tech firm ByteDance. However, it is also known for heavily censoring or limiting topics sensitive to Beijing. Taiwan's government banned public servants from using the app on official devices in 2022 over national security concerns.
