Surgeon who attacked rival doctor with knife at £1m luxury home jailed for life
A plastic surgeon who attempted to murder a colleague who took part in a disciplinary hearing against him has been jailed for life.
Jonathan Peter Brooks, 61, broke into the £1m family home of fellow doctor Graeme Perks and stabbed him after trying to burn down the property. He had armed himself with petrol, matches and a knife before cycling to the house in camouflage gear to get his colleague 'out of the way'.
Brooks doused the property in petrol and stabbed Mr Perks, 67, when he came downstairs after hearing a loud noise. He was rushed to hospital after being found by his wife and son and only survived thanks to 'quick action and amazing surgical skill'.
Brooks was found 'cold and asleep' in a garden several hours later and arrested in hospital after being taken there by paramedics.
The attack took place in January 2021 during the Covid lockdown, three days after disciplinary proceedings had begun against the defendant.
Brooks tried to get the hearing postponed a day before the attack in Halam, Notts – but his request was refused. Prosecutors said he then decided 'that instead of following the law he was going to take the law into his own hands'.
Mr Perks, who worked with Brooks at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, lived with wife Beverley, 68, and adult son Henry. Brooks's DNA was found on the knife, while fragments of glass were discovered on his clothing.
The burns specialist, of Southwell, Notts, was convicted of two counts of attempted murder in April. He was also found guilty of attempted arson with intent to endanger life and possession of a knife in a public place.
He was jailed for life today with a minimum term of 22 years.
Brooks refused to attend his trial in Loughborough, Leics, because he was on hunger strike in prison.
He also sacked his lawyers and was unrepresented in the case.
His only appearance during the trial came during a legal argument hearing in the jury's absence.
He appeared in court via video-link from HMP Norwich and could be seen lying on the floor.
In a failed bid for an adjournment, he told the judge: 'I would rather be dead than in prison so I continued with my hunger strike.
'I have had enough of being in prison.
'I don't particularly want to die but if my choice is between incarceration and death, I would rather be dead than incarcerated.'
Rachel Dean, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said Brooks carried out a 'planned, calculated attack'.
Det Insp Matt Scott, of Nottinghamshire Police, said Brooks clearly intended to 'fatally injure his victim'.
He said Mr Perks and his family had shown 'enormous courage and dignity' throughout the 'extremely distressing ordeal'.

Leicester man jailed after raping woman while on bail for another charge
A man who raped two women while on bail for a similar charge has been jailed for 25 years. Leicester man Randy Ayor, 22, attacked one woman following his acquittal, then raped another victim while on bail for that attack. The first woman to accuse Ayor said he became friendly towards her before tricking her into going back to his flat after a night out with friends, where she says he raped and assaulted her. Ayor was ultimately acquitted of that charge, but within weeks of that, he sexually assaulted another woman, switching abruptly from being charming and caring to being violent, a spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service said. When that victim came forward, the CPS brought charges against Ayor and asked the court to remand him to prison to protect other women, but he was instead released on bail. The first victim told detectives she had met Ayor in a city nightclub and that he raped her on several occasions, and strangled her to the point where she thought she was going to lose consciousness. While on bail, Ayor attacked a second woman, who said she was raped and strangled by Ayor, who took her phone and dictated who she could speak with and where she could go. She said he also became angry if she attempted to speak to other men, and discouraged her from spending time with her family at Christmas. Although Ayor was acquitted of raping the first woman who accused him, she was able to give her account to a jury again as 'bad character evidence' because her allegations were so similar to the other two women, prosecutors said. All three women described Ayor as being 'outwardly considerate and charming' at first, followed by an abrupt switch to violence, controlling behaviour and sexual abuse. In April, a jury at Leicester Crown Court convicted Ayor of one count of assault by penetration, five counts of rape and one count of strangulation against the first victim. According to the National Library of Medicine, in a study of homicide victims killed by intimate partners, 43% experienced non-fatal strangulation from their partner before their murder. In attempted homicides by an intimate partner, 45% of victims had been strangled before the attempted murder. Being strangled by a partner – even once – increases the risk of homicide by that person by over 600%. Against his second victim, he was convicted of one count of rape, one count of false imprisonment, two counts of actual bodily harm, one count of assault by beating and one count of controlling or coercive behaviour. He pleaded guilty to one count of strangulation against her. More Trending To protect future victims, the CPS applied to the court to sentence him as a dangerous offender, which means adding an extra period of up to eight years to the sentence he would normally get. Earlier this week, Ayor was given 22 years behind bars, extended by three years, making it 25 years behind bars. Charlotte Caulton-Scott, from CPS, said: 'Randy Ayor is a ruthless predator and a danger to women. He targeted women in vulnerable situations and used charm to deceive them. He manipulated multiple situations to trap his victims, assault them and rape them. 'Although Ayor was acquitted of crimes against her, the extraordinary resolve of the first complainant to give evidence in this trial, contributed to him facing the consequences of his abhorrent crimes.' Serial rapist Zhenhao Zou facing second trial as more women come forward
Serial rapist Zhenhao Zou is facing a second trial with police and prosecutors preparing to charge the Chinese student with a second round of offences. Zou, 28, is already serving a minimum 24 years for attacking 10 young women in London and China. Sources say there have been discussions between detectives and lawyers for the Crown Prosecution Service about at least one more trial for the Chinese student. Zou was sentenced on Thursday to life imprisonment, even offering to be chemically castrated in hopes of getting a lighter sentence. Since his conviction in March at least 24 women have come forward to British police, several of whom have made formal statements which could be admissible in a new trial. Zou came to Britain as a student, first in Belfast in 2017 and then in London. While a PhD student in mechanical engineering at University College London he was arrested in January 2024. He drugged and attacked women, videoing most of his crimes for his own sexual gratification which turned into the compelling evidence that saw him convicted. One source said: 'We expect more charges; we expect a second trial.' Detectives at the Metropolitan police fear the effects of the drugs used in the attacks could leave victims with no memory of the assaults. Officers suspect he could be one of the worst sexual offenders in British history after recovering videos of him attacking a further 50 victims. In total, there were 1,270 videos, 1,660 hours of footage, and 58 videos of Zou raping women, most of whom are still to be identified. There were also drugs, including those used to stupefy his victims. In court, he bragged of having sex with several women a month. The videos show a male, believed to be Zou, attacking a series of women. Some of the videos do not show the victims' faces, and about half are believed to have taken place in the UK, with detectives identifying which country attacks took place in by scouring videos for clues, such as the style of plug socket visible in the room. The drugs can render a victim motionless or barely able to speak, but they can also lead to bouts of euphoria. Despite the convictions against Zou for attacking 10 women, prosecutors want to be able to counter any defence in any new trial that the women were consenting. Sentencing Zou the judge, Rosina Cottage KC, said he would 'groom' victims over social media, and added: 'These women you treated callously as sex toys for your pleasure.' 'Real-life Wolf of Wall Street' ordered to pay back £64m in biggest ever order
On-the-run fraudster Anthony Constantinou, 42, who has been dubbed the 'real-life Wolf of Wall Street' has been ordered to pay back £64million or spend over 14 years behind bars An on-the-run fraudster known as the "real-life Wolf of Wall Street" has been slapped with what is believed to be the biggest proceeds of crime order ever made. Anthony Constantinou, 42, has been ordered to pay back £64 million or spend 14 more years in prison for a huge fraud. Constantinou fled Britain during his £70million investment scam trial at Southwark Crown Court in 2023. He was jailed in his absence for 14 years for fraud and money laundering, duping 312 investors from 2013 to 2015. It was reported last year that a death certificate has emerged appearing to show he died of a heart attack in Guadalajara, Mexico, and was cremated the next day. But David Marchant, of investigative bureau Offshore Alert, said: "It's possible he faked his own death. I think he's probably still alive." The confiscation order was made by a judge at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday. Constantinou was jailed for 12 months in 2016 for molesting two women in an atmosphere of "sexual bullying" likened at the Old Bailey to the Hollywood film The Wolf Of Wall Street. He was three years old when his father, the millionaire clothes designer Aristos Constantinou, was shot dead in his London mansion in 1985 as he returned from a New Year's Eve party with his wife. The unsolved case became known as the silver bullet murder because he had been killed with six bullets in polished nickel jackets. Adrian Foster of the Crown Prosecution Service said of the confiscation order: 'This was a callous scam targeting members of the public. Many people lost their hard-earned money because of Constantinou's greed and false promises in this fake investment scheme. 'We continue to pursue the proceeds of crime robustly with the City of London Police, where we identify available assets, to disrupt and deter large scale frauds like this case. 'In the last five years, over £478 million has been recovered from CPS obtained Confiscation Orders, ensuring that thousands of convicted criminals cannot profit from their offending. "£95 million of that amount has been returned to victims of crime, by way of compensation.'
