England XV vs France XV live: Latest updates as Steve Borthwick's side face rivals at Twickenham

Independent4 hours ago

England get their summer swing of international fixtures underway with a non-capped encounter with a France XV at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.
Steve Borthwick 's side will head for Argentina next week for the primary part of their mid-year business, a two Test series against the Pumas preceding a meeting with the United States in Washington. First, though, comes another chance to build on the progress made in the Six Nations on home soil, with the England boss naming a strong side blessed with some experienced figures even in the absence of their British and Irish Lions contingent.
Given the depth in French rugby, it is unsurprisingly a talented bunch brought by Fabien Galthie – particularly considering the four best teams in the Top 14 are otherwise occupied with the top flight's semi-finals. A tasty tussle with the All Blacks is their upcoming business, with those involved today hoping to stake a claim for a spot on the flight to New Zealand.

George Ford and Jamie George will co-captain a youthful England XV taking on an even more inexperienced France XV in the non-cap international at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham today.
Fly half Ford, who is one away from bringing up the 100-cap milestone, will have to wait until Test matches against Argentina and USA this summer to reach the magic number but is tasked with providing veteran nous to a line-up that is otherwise giving an opportunity for plenty of inexperienced heads to make a statement to head coach Steve Borthwick.

Ian McLauchlan, Scotland and Lions great, dies at 83

Ian McLauchlan, the former Scotland captain and part of the successful British & Irish Lions tours to New Zealand and South Africa in 1971 and 1974, has died at the age of 83. The prop, who led his country 19 times in his 43 appearances, played his last Test against New Zealand at Murrayfield in November 1979. Weighing 14st 6lb (91.6kg) on his debut in 1969, McLauchlan earned the nickname 'Mighty Mouse'. He was one of five tourists to start all eight Lions Tests on those two tours, and scored a crucial try as the Lions won 9-3 the first Test in Dunedin in June 1971. Andy Irvine, a fellow former Scottish Rugby President and teammate of McLauchlan's for both Scotland and the Lions, paid tribute on the Scottish Rugby website. 'He was some character and some player. He was smaller than most props he came up against but I never saw anyone get the better of him. He was so tough, almost indestructible. What a fantastic career he had for Scotland, and the Lions; it's very, very sad.' McLauchlan served as Scottish Rugby's president from 2010-2012. In 2013, he was inducted to Scottish Rugby's Hall of Fame and in 2017 he was awarded an OBE in the new year honours list. Scottish Rugby said it was 'immensely saddened' to learn of his death on Friday. The report will update

Moises Caicedo says Chelsea will learn from Flamengo defeat

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo insists lessons will be learnt from Friday's loss to Flamengo at the Club World Cup. The Blues capitulated in the second half in Philadelphia, surrendering a lead to lose 3-1 to the Brazilians and finish with 10 men. Most of the damage was done in a torrid six-minute spell in which they conceded twice and had Nicolas Jackson – just four minutes after coming off the bench – sent off for a reckless tackle. The result leaves them second in Group D with a win and a loss and potentially facing a more difficult route through the competition, with a possible clash against Bayern Munich in the last 16. 'It was difficult to take, but now we are focusing on the next game,' said Caicedo. 'For sure, we need to learn from this game. We need to react. 'I think the team played well but you need to be focused for 95 minutes in this game because, in one second, you can lose the game and that was what happened.' Flamengo looked the more energetic side but they lacked a cutting edge in the first half and it was Chelsea who carried the greater threat through some quick counter-attacks. Liam Delap, making his full debut in place of Jackson, forced a good save before Pedro Neto broke from halfway to open the scoring with a well-taken strike in the 14th minute. A feisty contest tilted in Flamengo's favour when Bruno Henrique equalised just after the hour and veteran Danilo followed up with a second three minutes later. The Premier League side were still reeling when Jackson was shown a straight red card for an aggressive studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas. It was his second sending off in four appearances for the club and ended their hopes of fighting back. Wallace Yan wrapped up the scoring seven minutes from time. Manager Enzo Maresca partly put the defeat – and a subdued performance from key playmaker Cole Palmer in a wider role – down to experimentation ahead of next season. The Italian said: 'It's not just about Cole. In the last two days we tried something completely different. 'For the first time we played in a different structure, just to prepare also for next season, to have more options. 'I think the plan was quite good for one hour until we conceded the goal, but I think at the end they deserved to win the game. 'Flamengo are a very good team with good players, with a good manager. They played very well.'

Orioles C Adley Rutschman out of lineup again vs. Yankees

June 21 - Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman was held out of the starting lineup on Saturday for the second straight game against the host New York Yankees. Rutschman tweaked his left side in batting practice and is nursing left abdominal tightness. Gary Sanchez will be behind the plate and Jordan Westburg will serve as the designated hitter on Saturday for the Orioles. Rutschman, 27, is hitting .227 with eight homers and 20 RBIs in 68 games this season. The top overall pick of the 2019 MLB Draft has yet to land on the injured list in his career. A two-time All-Star, Rutschman is batting .257 with 60 homers and 221 RBIs in 483 career games with Baltimore. --Field Level Media
