How a Day of Soccer Celebrations Turned to Chaos in Liverpool
The mood in Liverpool had been jubilant. Paul O'Brien and his family had flown in from Ireland to celebrate their soccer team's Premier League title. 'Everyone's singing all day, everyone having a good time, everyone talking to one another,' Mr. O'Brien recalled.
'And then…'
Standing along Water Street in the heart of Liverpool on Monday, Mr. O'Brien, his son and his parents suddenly found themselves being shoved, hard, by a surging crowd. Out of nowhere, a dark-color car was barreling down a street jammed with pedestrians. Had it not been for the people pushing them out of the way, Mr. O'Brien said on Tuesday, they might have been in the car's path.
'We didn't realize until we were pushed,' Mr. O'Brien said. 'And then we actually realized, 'Oh, something went on here.' There were people lying on the ground. But the people of Liverpool were amazing. Those people were very brave to push kids and people out of the way.'
In an instant, the joyful day had turned dark. At around 6 p.m. on Monday, police said, a 53-year-old British man plowed his vehicle into the crowd, injuring almost 50 people, including 27 who were sent to one of several hospitals in the area. Two people, including a child, were seriously injured. A fire department spokesman said that four people had to be pulled from underneath the car.
The impact of the vehicle slamming into the sea of pedestrians quickly rippled through this proudly working class city on England's northwestern coast.

Freese's gaffe disrupted that momentum and gave the physical visitors a spark, though that faded quickly as the match settled into a slog. Still, the U.S. caught a second wind in the second half; Tillman had two goals disallowed before Agyemang finally potted the winner off a beautiful pass by John Tolkin, who made his first start in place of Max Arfsten. Tillman continues to be the most productive and impressive American this summer, during which the German-born attacker is getting his first real run of playing time since joining the program three years ago. All three of Tillman's international goals have come in this Gold Cup. Off the field, the 23-year-old has also endeared himself to Pochettino and his staff, and the PSV man has taken full advantage of the opportunity presented by the absence of longtime first-choice wingers Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah, plus (dare we mention) Gio Reyna. The story of this summer has yet to be written for Tillman and his team, however. Now he has a chance to make an even bigger impression in the win-or-go-home contests to come. A tie would have been enough for the U.S. to top Group D, as the Saudis tied T&T on Saturday in a match played simultaneously. The Americans finished a perfect 3-0 in a Gold Cup group stage. But they could still face blood rival Mexico in next Sunday's quarterfinal. Even if El Tri tops the Costa Ricans later on Sunday, the Ticos would present the sternest challenge yet for Pochettino's squad. As promising as this Gold Cup has been for the U.S. so far, the real tests are still to come. I've been going back and forth about sharing this little secret of mine. Well, I guess it's finally time to stop gatekeeping my all-time favourite yong tau foo stall near my neighbourhood. It's none other than… (drum roll)… Mei Ji Niang Dou Foo 梅記釀豆腐 at Cheng San Market & Cooked Food Centre. For the uninitiated, this market is located near eateries like Magic Kitchen, the ever-popular Lao Wu Ji Mutton Soup, and the renowned The Pine Garden cake shop. For the past 10 years, my family has been returning to this stall whenever the yong tau foo craving strikes. This stall has been around for at least 12 years and it's mostly handled by 3 ladies — I saw only 2 that day. If you're approaching Mei Ji Niang Dou Foo 梅記釀豆, remember to head to the queue to choose your ingredients first, before scurrying over to the main line with your bowls. The yong tau foo selection spans over 30 varieties, and sticks to the time-honoured classics — don't expect any modern twists. Each ingredient costs S$0.70, with a minimum of 6 pieces if you're adding noodles for S$4.90. Want to indulge yourself? Enjoy it with gravy — it's just S$1 more! I consider the pricing here to be affordable. On a side note, the line moves pretty fast, so don't worry about waiting for an insane amount of time. Some of the fried ingredients get a quick spruce-up with a flash fry in the deep fryer, especially my favourite stuffed eggplant! Soup lovers will adore the clear broth, which is clean tasting yet possesses a depth of flavour that's perfectly seasoned. The best part? It doesn't leave you feeling thirsty. For those who like it dry (like myself), remember to load your saucers with the chilli and sweet sauce provided at the stall front. Mix everything up well, tuck in, and enjoy the little party in your mouth! My usual go-to combination is kway teow + yellow mee. Alternatively, you can enjoy that with bee hoon, too. If Ang Mo Kio isn't that much of a hassle to travel to, why not head down to Cheng San Market & Cooked Food Centre and give their yong tau foo a try? Who knows? A distinctly Saudi flavor permeates the Club World Cup at Audi Field
At a soccer tournament struggling to build an American audience, the Saudi influence was impossible to miss. It showed in the hundreds of Al Hilal fans who took over the east and south stands at Audi Field for the Saudi Arabian team's scoreless draw with Austria's Red Bull Salzburg in the Club World Cup on Sunday night. It showed in a pregame video advertisement for the Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, which is a sponsor of the tournament. And it showed in a sign outside the stadium featuring a picture of slain Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
