MUMBAI: HDB Financial Services , the non-bank lending arm of private lender HDFC Bank , said it may have to tweak its customer acquisition strategy if the Reserve Bank of India's ( RBI ) proposed guidelines on eliminating overlapping business activities between banks and their subsidiaries are implemented in their current form."We might have to make some changes to our customer acquisition strategy in terms of micro-segments that we address that we might choose to stop addressing," CEO Ramesh Ganesan told ET in an interview. "But we don't see a fundamental shift in our business strategy of what we're doing. This is a business that gets done best in an NBFC model."A draft circular on 'Framework for Forms of Business' issued by RBI in October 2024 impacted the bank's valuation as it prohibited the subsidiary from undertaking core lending activities and discouraged banks and their NBFC units from duplicating similar business. Products offered by HDFC Bank such as gold loans, loans against property and two-wheeler loans are also offered by its parent bank which has raised concerns among investors about the growth potential of HDB Financial.Ganesan also said that HDB does not do any business that is uncommon from its parent. "We don't do any business that banks are prohibited from doing, we don't do any business that is potentially an arbitrage," Ganesan said.HDB Financial Services is set to open its Rs 12,500 crore IPO on June 25. The issue will be available for subscription till June 27. HDB Financial Services has set a price band of Rs 700-740 per share.The company has a secured and unsecured loan mix of 75:25, and the management said it plans to maintain those ratios."We think we'll broadly stay in the 75:25 range, that's our comfort zone," Ganesan said. "Different products have different cycles, and if there's a product which goes through a slow period, we should be able to invest capital in other businesses that we expect to grow faster."At the end of March 2025, the company had a total loan book of over Rs 1 lakh crore. Its three main business verticals include enterprise lending which forms 39% of the total loan book, followed by asset finance at 38% and consumer finance at 23%.At the end of March 2025, its profit after tax stood at Rs 2,180 crore while the gross non-performing asset ratio stood at 2.3%. It had 1,771 branches spread across 1,170 towns and cities.On the liability side, 41.3% of borrowings are from non-convertible debentures, 37.7% through term and working capital loans and the remaining from external commercial borrowings, subordinated debt and commercial paper.The non-bank lender also said that it will try and maintain a 75:25 ratio for its fixed and floating rate borrowings."We broadly try to manage our assets and liabilities in a manner that we are not carrying risks or taking bets on events that should happen so that it improves our balance sheet," Ganesan said. "What we try to do is make sure that our assets and liabilities are broadly matched in terms of interest rates. We take on only as much of floating-rate loans as we have floating-rate assets. So that if there is an interest rate movement, we are not adversely impacted."

What India sells to Iran Iran is one of the biggest buyers of Indian Basmati, having purchased over 8.55 lakh metric tonnes in 2024–25, worth nearly Rs. 6,374 crore. In strong trade years, Iran has made up 30 to 35 per cent of all Basmati exports from India. On the other hand, India exports several important items to Iran including basmati rice, tea, sugar, medicines, and machinery. Rice (Basmati), tea, sugar, and fresh fruits are significant export items. A notable quantity of drugs and pharmaceuticals are also exported to Iran. India exports various types of machinery, electrical machinery, and electronic equipment to Iran. Artificial jewelry, rubber products, and certain chemicals are also part of the export basket. Processed minerals are another category of goods that India exports to Iran. What could go wrong if war breaks out If the conflict between Iran and Israel turns into a full-blown war, global oil prices could shoot up. That would directly affect India, since we import most of our crude oil from other countries. This could make petrol and diesel more expensive, and when fuel prices go up, the cost of transporting goods also rises. This would lead to higher prices for food, groceries, and daily essentials. In short, even though the war would be happening far away, its impact could be felt in every Indian household through higher inflation and supply shortages.

Crude surge, rupee fall may hit India's forex reserves
NEW DELHI: If the conflict in West Asia persists, India's foreign exchange reserves could face pressure as two adverse external dynamics converge: a sustained rise in Brent crude prices and continued depreciation of the rupee. Brent crude, the benchmark for India's oil imports, has climbed in recent weeks, driven by escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. Fears of a wider regional conflagration - especially one that disrupts the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly 20% of global crude flows - have triggered speculative surges in global oil markets. Although intermittent diplomatic efforts have helped temper price spikes, Brent remains significantly elevated by recent standards. For India, which relies on imports for over 85% of its crude oil needs, such volatility is particularly consequential. The situation is further compounded by the rupee's depreciation. Between June 2 and 19, the currency fell from Rs 85.35 to Rs 86.84 per US dollar—a 1.75% decline. While seemingly modest, the effect is magnified in the context of dollar-priced oil. When both crude prices and the rupee move unfavourably, the impact on import bill is considerable. Estimates suggest that each Rs 1 drop in the rupee's value could raise the annual oil import burden by Rs 8,000–10,000 crore, assuming stable import volumes and crude benchmarks. These pressures extend beyond the external sector. Higher crude prices typically lead to increased fuel costs, which in turn raise transport and logistics expenses, pushing up inflation. Although retail fuel prices have so far remained unchanged, public sector oil marketing companies are reportedly absorbing the excess cost—a measure that cannot be sustained indefinitely without weakening their financial health.

Lilavati trust slaps ₹1,000-crore defamation suit on HDFC Bank CEO
MUMBAI: The legal confrontation between the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust (LKMM Trust), which runs the prominent Lilavati Hospital in Bandra West, and HDFC Bank CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan escalated this week, with the trust filing a ₹ 1,000-crore defamation lawsuit against the banker. This move comes just two days after Jagdishan approached the Bombay High Court seeking to quash an FIR that accuses him of accepting a ₹ 2.05 crore bribe in a case linked to the trust. Lilavati trust slaps ₹ 1,000-crore defamation suit on HDFC Bank CEO Filed before a civil court, the suit accuses Jagdishan of making 'malicious, false, and defamatory statements' against the trust and its permanent trustee Prashant Mehta. In a strongly worded statement, the trust said the legal action was necessary to counter what it described as a 'coordinated campaign' to malign its reputation and obstruct its functioning as a public charitable institution. Separately, the trust has also filed a criminal complaint with a magistrate court in Girgaon. On June 16, the court issued notices to Jagdishan, HDFC Bank CEO Madhu Chibbar, the bank's corporate communications head, and others named in the complaint. 'This marks a significant step in holding the HDFC CEO accountable for what the trust alleges is a deliberate and sustained smear campaign,' the trust said. Responding to Jagdishan's court petition, the trust questioned his attempt to discredit valid judicial orders and FIRs. 'We have full faith in the Indian judiciary. Unlike Mr Jagdishan, who seeks to label due legal process as frivolous, we have followed the rule of law at every step,' it said. The trust also challenged HDFC Bank's claim of a ₹ 65 crore loan tied to Splendour Gems, a firm owned by the Mehta family. 'The bank initially cited an outstanding of ₹ 5 crore. This sudden escalation to ₹ 65 crore is an imaginary figure, a smokescreen created by Jagdishan to distract regulators and the public from his own corruption,' the trust alleged. Among the more serious accusations is that Jagdishan accepted free medical treatment and was involved in facilitating illegal financial transactions—including a ₹ 2.05 crore bribe, ₹ 48 crore in undisclosed deposits, and ₹ 1.5 crore allegedly routed to doctors under the guise of CSR. 'The ₹ 48 crore was deposited without the consent of founder-trustees and without mandatory high court approval, despite an operational injunction. This constitutes gross contempt of court,' the statement said. Calling the bank's allegations baseless and unsupported by documentation, the Trust reiterated that it has never been a borrower of HDFC Bank. 'On the contrary, we have been a lender—placing ₹ 48 crore in fixed deposits and bonds,' it said. 'This is not just a legal battle. It is a stand for truth and institutional accountability. When the head of a major financial institution targets a charitable trust with falsehoods while failing to back his claims with documents, it becomes clear the intent is not justice but intimidation,' said Prashant Mehta, permanent trustee of LKMM Trust. In his plea before the High Court two days ago, Jagdishan has strongly denied all allegations, calling the FIR 'malicious and vindictive' and accusing the complainant of misusing the name of the Lilavati Trust to settle personal scores.
