Fake NCERT books raid: Cop suspended for extortion
A month after a father-son duo were arrested for running a major fake NCERT books piracy racket with books worth ₹2.4 crore, the Delhi Police has suspended its prime investigator, a special staff inspector, and initiated enquiry against two more police officials for allegedly conducting unethical raids and extorting lakhs of rupees.
Police said the matter came to light last week after a complaint was filed against the inspector and two assistant sub-inspectors of the special staff for conducting raids with a 'malafide intention' against the accused.
According to police, on May 16, they received a tip about counterfeit NCERT books being sold on Mandoli Road. Police said they informed NCERT staff and conducted a raid which led to the arrest of a 48-year-old bookseller and his 26-year-old son. Further raids were conducted in Hiranki and 160,000 books were found, valued at ₹ 2.4 crore, said police.
However, during the proceedings, associates of the accused raised allegations of extortion against the inspector in-charge of the special staff in Shahdara and two of his ASIs.
Deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam confirmed that the inspector has been suspended after a complaint was received and a departmental enquiry is going on to verify all allegations.
An officer in eastern range said, 'Prima facie, the inspector went out of his way to conduct raids in Shahdara. He was supposed to rope in district investigation unit (DIU) who are in charge of raids under the Copyright Act and other violations. We also found that he cherry picked locations where they conducted raids and hid information from senior officers which shows malafide intention. We suspect that during these raids, they managed to extort the accused and their associates of lakhs of rupees'
Police said the matter is being investigated and the complaint is with a senior officer at the Delhi Police headquarters.

In a massive crackdown against narco-offenders and organised crime, the Delhi Police carried out Operation Kavach 8.0 across the city, conducting simultaneous raids at 1,040 locations in all 15 police districts, including operations by the crime branch and special cell, the officials said. 'The crackdown also extended to liquor, arms, and gambling offences. As many as 217 cases were registered under the Delhi Excise Act, resulting in the arrest of 224 individuals and seizure of 47,476 quarters of illicit liquor, along with 125 beer bottles and 158 cans. Additionally, 30 people were arrested under the Arms Act, with seizures including eight pistols, seven live cartridges, three magazines, and 23 knives,' he said. The drive also led to the arrest of 55 persons under the Gambling Act with ₹ 25,592 in cash, and 5,682 people were taken into preventive custody. Under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2,031 violators were prosecuted and one individual arrested, with recovery of 8.56 packets (469 e-cigarettes and 1.71 lakh banned foreign cigarettes). 'Among the key arrests was that of Ekanjot Singh Sandhu, 18, of Punjab, from whom four semi-automatic pistols and three magazines were recovered. Another accused, Sachin alias Hemu, 26, was arrested at Delhi University metro station with a country-made pistol and four live cartridges. In another case, the crime branch recovered 7,550 quarters of illicit liquor from a tempo in Mundka and 10,000 quarters from a mini-van in Madipur. Meanwhile, 1,48,200 prohibited foreign cigarettes were seized from a godown in old Delhi and 469 e-cigarettes from a Safdarjung Enclave paan shop,' the special CP said. It may be noted that Operation Kavach is part of a zero-tolerance approach inspired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah's directives for stringent action against drug syndicates. 'This sustained campaign has disrupted trafficking networks and forced major players underground,' added Srivastava.

Operation Kavach-8.0: 139 arrested, 133 cases filed in 24-hour drugs crackdown in Delhi
In a single-day crackdown under the Delhi Police's 'Operation Kavach 8.0', 139 narcotics offenders were arrested and 133 cases were filed under the NDPS Act, officers said on Friday. The operation was conducted between 6 pm on Wednesday and 6 pm on Thursday. It resulted in the seizure of 90.3 grams of heroin, 25.9 kg of ganja, 3.32 grams of cocaine, 4.63 grams of MDMA, 20.08 grams of amphetamine, and 12 buprenorphine tablets, said police. The operation was carried out by over 350 teams from all 15 districts, the Crime Branch, and the Special Cell, covering 1,040 targeted locations. It was supervised by senior officers, including Special Commissioner of Police, Crime, Devesh Chandra Srivastava, and Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, Surender Singh. Alongside NDPS enforcement, 224 people were arrested in 217 Excise Act cases, with the seizure of 47,476 illicit quarter bottles of liquor. Thirty persons were held in 29 Arms Act cases, leading to the recovery of pistols, cartridges, and knives. In addition, 55 gamblers were arrested and over Rs 25,000 in cash was seized. Police also prosecuted 2,031 violators under the Tobacco Act, seized over 1.7 lakh prohibited foreign cigarettes, and intercepted e-cigarettes worth Rs 9.38 lakh. An 18-year-old linked to the anti-Lawrence Bishnoi gang was also caught with four semi-automatic pistols. Officials said the crackdown has pushed major traffickers underground and disrupted smuggling networks. 'Under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2,031 violators were prosecuted and one person was arrested with over 1.71 lakh prohibited foreign cigarettes and 469 e-cigarettes,' said the Srivastava. Prohibited e-cigarettes worth around Rs 9.38 lakh were also seized from a shop in Safdarjung Enclave, police said. The senior police officer said that since January 2025, a total of 1,439 narco-offenders have been arrested in 1,127 NDPS cases, with seizures of nearly 38 kg of heroin, over 3,000 kg of cannabis, and other contraband. Amit Shah 1st to be told about cash at judge Varma's residence
Union home minister Amit Shah NEW DELHI: Home minister Amit Shah was the first to be informed by Delhi Police commissioner Sanjay Arora about "four or five half-burnt sacks" of cash at Justice Yashwant Varma's official residence within hours of its chance discovery following a fire on the night of March 14 at the bungalow's storeroom. Responding to a fire emergency call, firefighters and police reached Justice Varma's Tughlaq Crescent bungalow a little after 11.30pm on March 14. The first responders, who stumbled upon the bags stuffed with cash, shot videos of half-burnt currency notes of Rs 500 denomination around midnight. They left after dousing the fire around 1am on March 15. Delhi Police chief Arora first informed the home minister on March 15 and, later, briefed Delhi HC Chief Justice D K Upadhyay about the cash. Delhi Police chief Sanjay Arora also shared "certain still photographs and video" of the storeroom fire with the Delhi HC CJ, who in turn informed then CJI Sanjiv Khanna, triggering a chain of events which led to setting up of an inquiry into the sensational episode. The laboratory authenticated the images and videos - one of 67 seconds shot by head constable Roop Chand and another of 70 seconds shot by head constable Sunil Kumar. The panel said, "The phones have been analysed by us having been sent to CFSL, Chandigarh, and are per se admissible in view of the provisions of Section 329 of BNSS." Apart from legal admissibility of the evidence against Justice Varma, the panel said these pieces of evidence also stood corroborated by witnesses. "The said videos have been shown to independent eye-witnesses, including the fire/police personnel who were at the spot (and) who have vouched for the same," the panel said.
