Wildlife Experts Remove a Plastic Lid That Was Stuck on a Michigan Bear's Neck for Two Years

Michigan wildlife experts finally were able to trap a black bear and remove a large lid that had been stuck around its neck–for two years. 'It's pretty incredible that the bear survived and was able to feed itself,' state bear specialist Cody Norton said Wednesday. 'Its neck was scarred and missing hair, but the bear was in much better condition than we expected it to be.'
The bear first turned up on a trail camera as a cub in 2023 in the northern Lower Peninsula. After that, the Department of Natural Resources was on the lookout for the elusive animal with a hard plastic lid around its neck, Norton said. The bear appeared again on a camera in late May, still wearing the barrel lid, and the DNR responded by setting a cylindrical trap and safely luring it inside. The bear was anesthetized, and the lid was cut off on June 3. It eventually woke up and rambled away.
Norton said it's not precisely known how the lid got stuck on the bear's neck. Bear baiting is legal in Michigan, but the hole on a barrel lid typically must be large enough to avoid what happened to this bear. It also isn't known how the 110-pound (49.9-kilogram) bear slept through winters wearing the uncomfortable accessory. 'We were pleasantly surprised. It was still able to make a living like a pretty typical bear,' Norton said.

16B passwords leaked in record-breaking data breach

A staggering 16 billion passwords were leaked from accounts on Facebook, Google, Apple, and other social media platforms, as well as government services, which researchers called the largest data breach in history, Forbes reported. This prompted Google to urge billions of users to change their passwords. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also warned US citizens to avoid clicking on suspicious links received via text messages. The leak was uncovered as part of an ongoing investigation launched earlier this year by the team at Cybernews, who discovered 30 separate data sets. Experts described the incident as a coordinated mass exploitation scheme. What raised particular concern among investigators was that nearly all of the data sets contained previously unreported information, making this a completely new and unprecedented security crisis. Investigators believe the source of the breach was malware designed to harvest sensitive data from devices, including passwords saved in browsers, messaging apps, and cryptocurrency wallets.

Muslim NY mayoral candidate reports threats; Jewish Ohio lawmaker was threatened separately

WASHINGTON: The New York City Police Department said on Thursday its hate crime unit was probing anti-Muslim threats against mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani while in another incident US Representative Max Miller of Ohio said he was 'run off the road' by another driver with a Palestinian flag. These marked the latest US incidents to raise concerns about the rise in hate against Americans of Muslim, Arab, Jewish, Israeli and Palestinian heritage since the start of Israel's war in Gaza in late 2023. An NYPD spokesperson said police received reports that on Wednesday at 9:45 a.m., Mamdani, a Democratic state assembly member and mayoral candidate, reported that he 'received four phone voicemails, on various dates, making threatening anti-Muslim statements by an unknown individual.' There have not been any arrests so far and the investigation remained ongoing, the NYPD added. The New York Daily News reported a man threatened to blow up Mamdani's car. Mamdani had no immediate comment. Separately, Republican US Representative Max Miller from Ohio said on X he was 'run off the road' in the city of Rocky River on Thursday while he and his family were threatened by a person with a Palestinian flag. He said he had filed a police report. 'Today I was run off the road in Rocky River, and the life of me and my family was threatened by a person who proceeded to show a Palestinian flag before taking off,' said Miller, who is Jewish and pro-Israeli. He labeled the incident, which was also condemned by top congressional Democrats, as antisemitic. Recent incidents that raised alarm over antisemitism and anti-Israel attitudes in the US include a fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy employees in Washington and a Colorado attack that left eight people wounded when a suspect threw incendiary devices into a pro-Israeli crowd. Incidents raising alarm about anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian prejudice include the fatal stabbing of a 6-year-old Palestinian child in Illinois, the attempted drowning of a 3-year-old Palestinian American girl in Texas and a violent mob attack on pro-Palestinian protesters in California.

ICE agents asked to leave Dodger Stadium parking lot, team says

LOS ANGELES: The Los Angeles Dodgers organization said Thursday that it asked US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to leave the Dodger Stadium grounds after they arrived at a parking lot near one of the gates. Dozens of federal agents with their faces covered arrived in SUVs and cargo vans to a lot near the stadium's Gate E entrance. A group of protesters carrying signs against ICE started amassing shortly after, local media reported. 'This morning, ICE agents came to Dodger Stadium and requested permission to access the parking lots. They were denied entry to the grounds by the organization,' the team said in a statement posted on X. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the agents were not trying to enter the stadium. 'This had nothing to do with the Dodgers. vehicles were in the stadium parking lot very briefly, unrelated to any operation or enforcement,' she said in an email. The team said the game against the San Diego Padres later Thursday will be played as planned. Television cameras showed about four agents remained at the lot Thursday afternoon while officers with the Los Angeles Police Department stood between them and dozens of protesters, some carrying signs that read 'I Like My Ice Crushed' and chanting 'ICE out of LA!' Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez arrived at the stadium and said she had been in communication with Dodger officials and the mayor's office. 'We've been in communication with the mayor's office, with the Dodgers, with Dodgers security, about seeing if they can get them moved off their private property,' she told KABC-TV. 'Public property is different. Private property — businesses and corporations have the power to say, 'Not on my property,' And so we're waiting to see that movement happen here.' Protests began June 6 after federal immigration raids arrested dozens of workers in Los Angeles. Protesters blocked a major freeway and set cars on fire the following days, and police responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and flash-bang grenades. The team has yet to make a statement regarding the arrests and raids. The Dodgers' heavily Latino fan base have been pushing for the team to make a public statement and ignited a debate online about its stance on the immigration crackdown happening in Los Angeles. The Trump administration has activated more than 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines over the objections of city and state leaders. Dozens of troops now guard federal buildings and protect federal agents making arrests. The demonstrations have been mostly concentrated downtown in the city of around 4 million people. Thousands of people have peacefully rallied outside City Hall and hundreds more protested outside a federal complex that includes a detention center where some immigrants are being held following workplace raids. Despite the protests, immigration enforcement activity has continued throughout the county, with city leaders and community groups reporting ICE present at libraries, car washes and Home Depots. School graduations in Los Angeles have increased security over fears of ICE action and some have offered parents the option to watch on Zoom.
