The Eta Aquariid meteor shower is about to peak. Here's how to catch it from Australia
Early risers are in for a treat, with one of the best meteor showers of the Southern Hemisphere about to peak later in the week.
The shower is visible from anywhere in Australia and, if you know where to look, you might catch up to 22 meteors an hour.
This year will be particularly good because the Moon won't be visible when the meteors — called the Eta Aquariids — start streaking across the night sky.
Laura Driessen, an astronomer at the University of Sydney, says it will be worth getting out of bed to watch the meteor shower if you have clear skies.
"
It is beautiful. Every time I get the chance to see [the Eta Aquariids], it's fantastic.
"
When can I see the Eta Aquariids?
Weather permitting,
Australians can expect to see the most meteors before dawn on Thursday, May 8.
That's because the shower peaks during the day on Wednesday, May 7.
However, the Eta Aquariids slowly ramp up over a few weeks from late April, then taper off until it's all over in late May.
So a few days either side of the peak could still
be impressive, with up to
a dozen visible meteors per hour
early in the week, depending on your location.
Here is an estimate of how many meteors you might see from different parts of Australia — the further north you are, the better.
The best time to see the meteors is in the early morning before sunrise,
when Aquarius, the constellation the meteors appear to come from,
will be highest in the north-east sky.
Dr Driessen recommends heading out
between 3:00 and 5:00am local time
to see the most meteors.
"The couple of hours before dawn … will be the best time," she says.
That's because by 3:00am, the Moon will have set. Without the bright Moon, the sky will be particularly dark, and you'll be able to better spot meteors.
How best to see the meteor shower
To get the best view of any meteor shower, the most important thing is to
head to a dark location
.
While those in the city might see an Eta Aquariid meteor or two this week, skywatchers in areas with little or no light pollution
might be able to see dozens every hour.
Meteors seem to come from a "radiant point".

But according to University of Southern Queensland
astronomer Rebecca McElroy, don't expect to see them immediately.
"Go and get a picnic blanket, lie down, look at the sky and you've got to wait at least 15 minutes for your eyes to adjust," she says.
"If you've been inside, or looking at your phone, you need to wait for your eyes to adjust to the much smaller amount of light [produced by
a meteor]."
Then, when you're settled,
look to the north-east, near the horizon
.
The part of the sky where the meteors will seem to "shoot" from — called the "radiant point" — is a star in the Aquarius constellation called Eta Aquarii.
Mercury will be lowest in the sky, with much brighter Venus above it and Saturn above that.
Venus will be visible below the Eta Aquariids shower on the morning of May 7.

While you might not see meteors straight away, Dr McElroy says staying out in the dark for about an hour or so will give you the best chance of catching some.
Meteors don't uniformly arrive. Sometimes there will be no visible meteors for a few minutes, and then a few will arrive in quick succession.
What causes the Eta Aquariids?
While staring at sky searching for meteors, it might seem like the light show is coming from the Eta Aquarii star itself. But that's an optical illusion.
Dr McElroy notes that the constellation is a bit like a background painting, with the meteors in the foreground. This is the case with all meteor showers.
"It just so happens that at this time of year, the constellation … in that direction is the constellation of Aquarius," she says.
What causes the Eta Aquariids is actually Halley's Comet — or, rather, the debris it leaves behind.

As Halley's Comet makes its way through the Solar System, it lays down a trail of dust, gas and other scraps which intersects with Earth's orbit twice a year, Dr Driessen says.
"
Most meteors are usually rice-grain size, and Earth just ploughs through this little cloud of small particles.
"
At this time of year, Halley's Comet debris trail causes the Eta Aquariids, and later in the year it causes the Orionids meteor shower.

‘Manipulative': Expert slams states on sluggish shark net stance
A Sydney shark expert has gone to town on the NSW and Queensland governments, accusing them of manipulating public perception in an effort to drum up support for shark nets and saying none of the available scientific evidence points to them being effective. Shark nets across NSW beaches are taken in annually from mid-autumn to mid-spring, however the NSW government is conducting a review to determine shark mitigation measures for the 2025-26 summer, including support from local councils on the continued use of shark nets. Speaking to NewsWire, The University of Sydney associate professor and shark behaviour expert Christopher Pepin-Neff said he believed two simple premises lay at the heart of the issue; firstly, that shark nets catch fish (Sutherland Shire council reported a 13 times differential between non-target animals caught in nets compared with the targeted eight species of sharks), and secondly, that in getting caught, those fish struggle and die and attract sharks. 'Shark nets attract sharks,' he said. 'There is no way that science exists everywhere in the ocean except on netted beaches in NSW or Queensland. 'That the vibrations that struggling fish make attract sharks everywhere in the ocean except when they get caught in a net at a netted beach in Australia. 'If science still applies, then we have to conclude that shark nets attract sharks to local beaches.' The decision to use shark nets is left to the state government, and during the 2024-25 season, 51 beaches between Newcastle and Wollongong used shark nets. Professor Pepin-Neff said his principal objection to shark nets was that 'they are used by politicians when it is convenient for them to protect themselves by providing a false sense of security to the public'. 'Politicians know that the public has an idea that shark nets work and they are manipulating that public perception for their own benefit,' he said. 'It's a disgrace that in 2025, politicians have not come clean about the fact that shark nets and a lot of beach safety measures are mythical. 'For me, this is not an environmental issue; it is an issue of integrity in the policy process and respect for local constituents across Australia.' The office of NSW Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty declined to respond to NewsWire's request for comment; however Professor Pepin-Neff, received a letter from the Department of Primary Industries (DPIE) saying 'in 2024/25 the DPIE consulted the 25 coastal councils about their preferences for shark mitigation at beaches within their local government area'. 'The NSW government is currently considering the feedback from the councils as well as the evidence from the technologies used over the 2024/25 summer period to help inform the upcoming season,' the DPIE continued. The Sutherland Shire in Sydney was one of the last councils in NSW to oppose the use of shark nets on its beaches. When the state government surveyed local councils in late 2024, councillors were presented with options and evidence for the various shark mitigation technologies. Sutherland Shire councillor Kal Glaznig voted against the use of shark nets and speaking to NewsWire said 'just based on the evidence that was presented it was pretty clear that they're not the most effective tools to keep people safe'. 'I feel like it's a big education piece for beachgoers. The thing around shark nets and why there's a bit of hesitancy to take them out is this perceived safety, which from what I saw scientifically, there's no argument for,' he said. 'People in our community aren't getting in the ocean or not getting in the ocean because they feel like they're being saved with nets.' Mr Glaznig said he couldn't speak for everyone, but during the council deliberation he didn't have a single constituent reaching out to say 'keep the nets in' but was instead inundated with community members who spent large amounts of time in the ocean saying they didn't believe the nets should be in. 'A lot of the evidence for me is around the fact that these nets have been here since 1937,' Mr Glaznig said. 'And I feel like if we just relied on existing measures for everything in life from nearly 100 years ago, we would be so backwards and behind. 'The ocean is such an unknown and you're never going to be able to control the elements, but you can definitely use better technologies and fuller solutions.' 
 'My take for the state government is for them to hopefully listen to what the councils who are on the ground with the community are saying because ultimately we are more accessible than state ministers in getting the response and the feel from the community. 'And our community in the Sutherland shire is telling us that they don't want shark nets and the experts that presented made it super clear that shark nets were not the most effective way to keep people safe.'

The Australian push to rewrite the rules of nuclear launches
Rising tension in the Middle East and South Asia has heightened fears of a war between nuclear-armed nations, something that threatens human existence, an Australian academic says. A rise in nuclear posturing and rhetoric in recent years has also prompted renewed calls for international safeguards to prevent accidental or unauthorised nuclear launches. A new study conducted by professor Emily Crawford from the University of Sydney Law School warns urgent action is needed to address the growing risks posed by nuclear weapons. "Increasing political tensions in declared and non-declared nuclear states have brought back into sharp focus the need to better regulate nuclear weapons," she said. The study highlights a combination of ageing nuclear infrastructure, emerging AI capabilities, and a lack of global cooperation as key factors creating what it describes as an "unstable and dangerous landscape". So how do nuclear systems operate — and is an accidental launch actually possible? Countries possessing nuclear weapons use NC3 systems, which stand for nuclear command, control and communications, Crawford explained. She said the NC3 systems are the central nervous system of a state's nuclear weapons program, which includes the people, policies, and technologies responsible for nuclear decision-making. "It's the framework that governs the process that, as its ultimate end product, results in the launch of a nuclear weapon — so it's a phrase that encompasses the entire chain from when a decision is made to launch a nuclear weapon to the actual launch of such a weapon," she said. NC3 also includes the maintenance of nuclear systems, ensuring that planning and execution are conducted according to stated doctrine and policy. Different countries have varying approaches to their NC3 systems, meaning the threshold for when a nuclear weapon could be launched is not universal. In many countries, the NC3 infrastructure is ageing, which can pose a security risk to the entire world. "There is currently no binding international legal standard that governs how nuclear-armed states design or operate their NC3 systems," Crawford said. "This gap in governance poses a real risk to global security — and it's only growing." NC3 frameworks are designed to prevent accidental or unlawful launches, but Crawford warned they are increasingly under strain. In many countries, the NC3 infrastructure is outdated, with some hardware dating back several decades. She said these legacy systems are often poorly suited to handle modern threats, especially those involving cyberattacks or AI. "In a world where AI tools can mimic official communications and cyber incursions can scramble critical infrastructure, the possibility of a false alarm triggering an escalation is no longer far-fetched," Crawford said. In such a high-stakes environment, even a single NC3 failure could lead to catastrophic consequences. Crawford said in 2025, there have been growing concerns around disinformation and hacking campaigns targeting early warning systems. Crawford's study calls for an international code of conduct that countries could adopt to establish a universal approach to nuclear systems. "A commitment to ensuring that there is an accountable chain of command involved in any nuclear weapons launch decisions, a commitment to the concept that the decision to launch a weapon should never lie with just one person, to keep AI out of nuclear launch decisions, and a commitment to 'no first strike'— that nuclear weapons would never be used offensively by a party who were not themselves subject to a nuclear attack," she said. This could be modelled off a similar framework, like the Missile Technology Control Regime — an initiative of the G7 member states from the 1980s to limit the risks of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Crawford believes such a framework could be successful, as many states have already adopted most of the rules she outlined in her study. "Because of the potentially devastating impacts of an accidental or unauthorised launch, most states have been very pragmatic about embracing guidelines that ensure that lines of communication remain open [such as nuclear hotlines] and that measures should exist to prevent unnecessary escalation of hostilities where nuclear weapons are in the mix," she said. "The US, UK and China have stated their commitment to not use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear weapons states or nuclear-weapons free zones; China adopts a 'no first use' policy, as does India; France adopts the two-person rule." But she acknowledged not all countries would support universal guidelines, as political differences may lead some to reject certain rules.

Doctors sound alarm over microplastics as health and environmental fears mount
Microplastics have infiltrated nearly every corner of life — they're in our food and drinks, in the clothes we wear, and even in the air we breathe. Even newborns aren't immune, according to former Australian Medical Association president, Steve Robson. '(Microplastics) been detected in breast milk and even in baby poo of newborn babies,' professor Robson told 7NEWS, adding they 'can even affect our reproductive system'. 'What it's doing to our bodies is really frightening me.' A growing body of research has experts sounding the alarm on the potential health impacts of microplastic exposure. The University of Sydney published a major study on the topic showing that microplastics are 'building up in all types of tissues and cells within the human body'. 'Also with the digestive system, we found links to characteristics associated with cancer,' said the university's senior research fellow, Nicholas Chartres. 'We also found that they also impact things like respiratory health — so lung function — but also increasing chronic inflammation in the lung and also again with potential links to things like lung cancer.' An international treaty involving 175 countries is currently being finalised to combat global plastic pollution. But Chartres and a team of leading experts say environmental action must be matched with policies to protect human health. The are calling for a global cap on plastic production and legally binding requirements to ensure plastics are free from toxic chemicals, and taken aim at big companies and countries who are delaying reforms. 'We can't recycle our way out of the problem,' Chartres told 7NEWS. 'All we're doing essentially is continuing the cycle of exposing ourselves to these hazardous chemicals.' The team has also called attention to single-use plastics in healthcare, which surged during the COVID-19 pandemic. Robson says a review into healthcare is important. 'We need to think really carefully about how to refocus the health system to minimise the risk to patients and to the staff providing care,' Robson said. If the world fails to act, experts have predicted a dire future. 'Unfortunately, for generations to come there is going to be a growing burden of disease due to plastics,' Chartres said.
