RANAU: The State Government has agreed to remove two villages here, namely Kg Ponulangon and Kg Walou, from the Forest Reserve area. Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Abidin Madingkir, said the matter was decided following several meetings with the Director of Forestry and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Hj Noor. 'I am pleased to announce that, in principle, the Chief Minister has given approval. 'This means that the villagers can apply for land ownership and the land can be cultivated for farming, building houses and so on, without interference from the Forest Department. 'However, this approval will be brought to the State Assembly for ratification,' said the Paginatan Assemblyman. He added that in this regard, the Forest Department will go down to the field to identify how much land will be removed from the Forest Reserve 'As the Wakil Rakyat, I will continue to strive to realise the aspirations of the villagers just like our efforts to realise the construction of a road from Kg Walou, Kg Ponulangon to Kg Tinanom. 'On the needs of the Mini Dewan in Kg Ponulangon, we submitted an application for the construction of a Mini Dewan to the District Office last year,' he said. 'I will instruct UPPM to refer back to the application. Hopefully we will be able to solve this matter this year too.' Abidin said this while officiating the Kg Ponulangon-level Kaamatan Festival held at the Balai Raya Kg Ponulangon, recently. He commended the leaders and residents of Kg Ponulangon for organising the village-level Kaamatan Festival. 'The theme 'Kaamatan for All' is significant because now Kaamatan is celebrated by all levels of society regardless of race or religious differences. 'For the KDMR community, Kaamatan is celebrated because we are grateful for the good harvest. All of this is a gift from God,' he said. According to him, the Kaamatan Festival is held every year because it is a local culture that must be preserved for future generations. Apart from that, he said, Kaamatan can unite the people. Meanwhile, Abidin said the government has revived the Sabah Padi and Rice Board with the aim of increasing local paddy production to reduce dependence on imported rice which is still at 72pc. He called on the residents of Kg Ponulangon to continue to support Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming PRN17 for the continuation of the GRS government's development programme through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development plan. 'For our part, we will continue to serve the people because there are still many unfinished business. 'We are confident in the strong support of the residents of Kg Ponulangon,' he said. Also present were Special Officer to Datuk Abidin Madingkir, Juis Konsuling, CDO Jipili Sigal, KAN Dualis Porodtong, KAN Sawalin Zakaria, KAN Kapilin Hj Surop, Mukim Paus Developer, Jasni Maston and local leaders. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Warisan urges explanation of ‘hidden' tariff hikes in Sabah

Warisan Kota Kinabalu division information chief Samuel Wong has called for transparency over Sabah's electricity tariff structure, alleging hidden rate hikes under the tiered billing system. KOTA KINABALU: The city's Warisan branch has urged the state government to address what it claims are hidden electricity tariff hikes in Sabah through a quietly restructured tiered billing system. Its information chief, Samuel Wong said that although the state recently announced a six-month waiver of the electricity surcharge under the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism, Sabahans are still experiencing rising bills due to a more complicated and punishing tier structure. 'The government says there's no surcharge, but our bills tell a different story. What Sabahans are facing is a hidden tariff hike, not through official announcements, but via subtle changes to how electricity usage is charged,' he said in a statement. He explained that in 2022, there were five usage tiers ranging from RM0.175 to RM0.450 per 100 units. However, by 2025, the structure expanded to seven tiers, with a new highest rate of RM0.470 per 100 units. 'This expansion and reshuffling of thresholds means ordinary households are now more likely to hit the highest rate even with moderate usage. It's a disguised price hike,' he said. Wong contrasted Sabah's situation with upcoming reforms in Peninsular Malaysia, where the tiered system will be scrapped by July 2025 in favour of real-time tariff reviews based on actual fuel prices and foreign exchange rates. 'The peninsula is seeing meaningful reform. What about us in Sabah? Is the GRS-Pakatan Harapan government even trying to fight for a fair deal for us?' he asked. He also urged the government to abolish the 8% Sales and Service Tax (SST) imposed on residential electricity usage, calling it a burden on essential needs. 'Electricity is essential. Why are we taxing families who are already overpaying under a broken system?' he said. Wong called on Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) and the state government to fully disclose the current tariff structure and present a clear roadmap for reform. 'Sabahans have paid more than enough. We need answers, we need reform, and we need action now,' he said.

THE State Government will continue to strengthen the implementation of inclusive and comprehensive development policies through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) roadmap in its efforts to ensure sustained progress and the well-being of the people in the state. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said that since its introduction, the policy has had a significant impact, particularly in areas such as economic recovery, investment, agriculture, human capital development, and public welfare. 'Alhamdulillah, we are witnessing growing investment activities and increased state revenue collection in recent years. This is proof of the effectiveness of the government's approach,' he said, in his speech during the Istiadat Pengurniaan Darjah-Darjah Kebesaran in conjunction with the official 74th birthday celebration of the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, at Istana Seri Kinabalu, Saturday. He added that the State Government is also focusing on the development of the agricultural sector, which is a key contributor to ensuring food security in Sabah. Among the initiatives were establishment of the Sabah Rice and Padi Board (LPBS) and the launch of the Paddy Crop Takaful Scheme (STTP) aimed at increasing the state's rice Self-Sufficiency Level (SSL) from 24 per cent in 2025 to sixty per cent by 2030. 'This is a strategic step to ensure Sabah becomes more self-reliant in basic food production, thereby reducing dependence on imports,' he said. Advertisement He added that human capital development, especially among the younger generation, remains a top priority for the government through various youth development programmes such as skills training, education, entrepreneurship, leadership and sports. Hajiji said the State Government has also approved the establishment of the Sabah State TVET Council as a platform to coordinate and monitor technical and vocational education and training to meet current industry needs. 'We want to ensure Sabah's youths are equipped with the knowledge and skills relevant to contribute to the development of the state and the nation.' Hajiji also emphasised that the strong relationship and close cooperation with the Federal Government will continue to be upheld to ensure Sabah is not left behind in the national development agenda. He said the State Government highly values the various forms of assistance and initiatives provided by the Federal Government, including in infrastructure, health, education, and security. He expressed his appreciation to the Prime Minister for the Federal Government's commitment to defending Sabah's rights and sovereignty, including the successful rejection of external claims on the state at the international level. 'Malaysia's success in repelling foreign claims on Sabah proves that the sovereignty of this state remains firm under the Federation of Malaysia, and this gives confidence and reassurance to all Sabahans,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
