Shuttling FIFA fans, no driver needed

Self-driving shuttles could soon carry residents and FIFA World Cup visitors from MARTA's West End station to the breweries and restaurants along the Westside Trail.
Driving the news: Project officials are asking the Atlanta-Region Transit Link Authority for $1.75 million to launch a pilot program with Beep, an autonomous mobility company.
Zoom in: The two-mile experiment route would launch in January and run through 2026, Shaun Green, the Beltline's principal engineer, told the board at a called meeting on Monday.
It would run on city streets between Atlanta University Center, the rail station and Lee+White every 10 to 15 minutes for roughly 10 hours a day.
Follow the money: The award from ATL's transit trust fund would cover roughly 58% of the project's $3 million cost. The Beltline would kick in the remainder.
Yes, and: Beltline officials have not settled on a fare; Green said he thinks the rides would be "on the free side" during the pilot program.

Green said Beltline officials have been discussing the project with Beep for the past two years.
Between the lines: Mayor Andre Dickens' decision in March to punt the construction of Beltline rail to his successor shook up Atlanta's transit future, Etch-A-Sketch-style.
How Atlanta plans to move large numbers of people at the same time throughout the city is very much an open question.
What they're saying:"As you all know, transit is a part of our whole DNA when it comes to the Beltline," Clyde Higgs, the president and CEO of Atlanta Beltline Inc., told the board.
"CliffsNotes version: It's going to require lots of different modes and options, and so this is something, as we try to get ahead of the FIFA World Cup for next year, that we want to experiment with."
What's next: The ATL board could vote on the request at the June board meeting. Green said the Beltline would launch a community engagement process while Beep prepares vehicles for the January rollout.

Over the past week, two of the program's elite commits, four-star quarterback Helaman Casuga and four-star edge rusher Jordan Carter, have been invited to the annual Rivals Five-Star event in Indianapolis, Indiana, which now features the Aggies' top-ranked wide receiver commit. On Friday, it was revealed that 2024 four-star wide receiver Aaron Gregory has become the newest A&M commit to be invited to the event of the summer, showcasing his elite talent. This is highly unsurprising, given his impressive play this summer during various camps, where he demonstrated his elite route-running and improved downfield speed. Earlier this month, running back Jonathan Hatton and tight end Caleb Tafua, along with Gregory, shut down their recruitment and will sign with the program as soon as Early Signing Day on December 4. During his 2024 junior season at Douglas County HS, Gregory reeled in 53 receptions for 914 yards and nine touchdowns after recording 795 yards and eight touchdowns during the previous season. Gregory's ability to quickly separate in coverage and make plays after the catch is similar to former A&M wideout and current Oregon standout Evan Stewart. As soon as Gregory steps on campus, the Georgia native has a chance to climb up the 2026 depth chart as a third or fourth option during his freshman season. Saints sign three UFL players

The Saints made official the departures of cornerback Travion Fluellen and running back Xazavian Valladay, who were waived Friday. The Saints also announced three signings. Tight end Seth Green, cornerback Jayden Price and offensive tackle Barry Wesley are joining New Orleans on one-year contracts. Green, 27, played the past two seasons for the UFL's Arlington Roughnecks. In 2025, he caught 13 passes for 150 yards with a touchdown. Green played his college ball at Minnesota from 2017-20 before transferring to Houston in 2021. He caught 13 passes for 157 yards with three touchdowns in his last collegiate season before going undrafted in 2022. He spent two months on the practice squad with Cowboys in 2022 and also participated in Dallas' 2023 training camp and preseason. Price originally signed with the Falcons as a free agent following the 2024 draft out of North Dakota State but did not make the roster. He was a teammate of Green's with the Renegades this spring, recording 27 tackles and half a sack while adding 194 punt return yards and 337 kickoff return yards. In the fall of 2024, Price played one game for the Canadian Football League's Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Wesley played for the Seattle Sea Dragons of the XFL in the 2023 spring season coming out of Colorado State, where he played from 2018-21. After the XFL season, he signed with the Falcons and made the practice squad out of the preseason. After competing with the Falcons in the 2024 preseason, Wesley joined the UFL's Birmingham Stallions for the 2025 spring season. He started nine of 11 games played, seeing action at tackle and guard, and was a nominee for the league's Sportsman of the Year award.
