Rory McIlroy trails by two as Scottie Scheffler holds share of lead
Masters champion McIlroy had finished tied for 19th at the US Open over a punishing Oakmont course – but ended the weekend on a positive following a three-under-par final round, which was the joint best of the day.
The Northern Irishman – who saw his driver ruled as 'non-conforming' ahead of last month's PGA Championship before then missing the cut at the Canadian Open – had been looking to build some momentum at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell as focus turns towards the Open at Royal Portrush.
World number two McIlroy landed a birdie at the second and then sank two more ahead of the turn at the final PGA Tour Signature Event of 2025.
After picking up another couple, a further birdie at the 17th – from the best part of 30 feet having hit a fine recovery shot out of the rough and over the water onto the green – saw him finish six under with 64 to sit in a tie for second, two shots behind early clubhouse leader Austin Eckroat.
American Eckroat hit a fine eight-under round, which included an eagle at the par-three 13th and a sixth birdie at the 18th.

Scheffler was one of the late starters paired alongside newly-crowned US Open champion JJ Spaun – who unlike his playing partner endured a perhaps expected tough round to finish three-over following successive bogeys on the closing two holes.
There was, though, no such trouble for Scheffler, who never looked back after three birdies from the opening four holes.
The American – who landed a third major title with the PGA Championship crown at Quail Hollow during May – then picked up an eagle on the 13th and another birdie at 15, before a bogey at the 17th was the only blemish on his eight-under 62.
McIlroy's playing partner Keegan Bradley is also at six-under, having dropped a shot at the 12th, alongside Wyndham Clark, the 2023 US Open champion.
Out of position? Not for Rory McIlroy.

'Overall it was a good start to the tournament, and I think when you're in a two-ball like that and we can sort of feed off one another a little bit too, that's nice as well,' McIlroy said after his opening round.
'I just want to see some good golf and see some better shots. I think if you concentrate on that and you are concentrating on your quality of golf and concentrating on just trying to play to the best of your ability, the result will take care of itself.
'There's no point in thinking about the result right now. I'm just trying to play as good as I can and make good swings, and if I do that enough, more than likely I'll find myself in a position to have a chance to win.'
England's Tommy Fleetwood carded a first round of 66 to sit in a group tied for sixth.
Scotland's Robert MacIntyre, runner-up at Oakmont on Sunday, finished one over following a double-bogey six on the 17th.
Jordan Spieth WD during the first round of the Travelers Championship with a neck/upper back injury.

Jordan Spieth withdrew during his first round because of a neck/upper back injury.
'I may have just slept wrong and then something came along. I don't know what caused it,' he said.
'I think it was just a random one-off that unfortunately got worse and bad enough on a Thursday that I didn't feel like I could continue.'

Ex-Celtic star on ‘weird' White House meeting with Donald Trump as he talked Iran and trans athletes
He replied to one of the President's questions but was called 'too nice' AWKWARD MOMENT Ex-Celtic star on 'weird' White House meeting with Donald Trump as he talked Iran and trans athletes Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) YOU'VE surely seen it by now - the cringe worthy, awkward and frankly strange video of Donald Trump meeting the stars of Juventus at the White House. In amongst the players - who looked a mixture of nervous, stunned or disgusted - was a former Celtic star who has now opened up on the "weird" Oval Office encounter. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 1 Donald Trump hosted the Juventus squad at the Oval Office The Serie A giants were granted the opportunity to visit the President in Washington DC. But it descended into a bit of a farce as the squad were forced to listen to Mr Trump talk about the serious escalation in relations with Iran in front of them, as well as being asked for their opinions on trans athletes in sport. Mr Trump said at one point: "Could a woman make your team, fellas? "Tell me." After a few strange and anxious looks, the only one to offer a reply was former Celtic winger Timo Weah. He said "Yeah" before the president disregarded his response and replied "you're being nice." Mr Trump then turned to some senior Juve officials and asked: "What do you think, you think a woman could make the team? "General managers, what do you think?" One responded by saying: "We have a very good women's team." Mr Trump said: "You do have? Celtic transfer special - Nygren in and Kyogo to return "But they should be playing with women. "It's one of those things right. "They're very diplomatic." The President then asked where the two American players in the squad were - Weah and Weston McKennie - before shaking their hands and calling them "the best players on the field." Speaking after the bizarre incident, Weah, who played for Celtic on loan in the 2018-19 season, said: "It was weird. I was caught by surprise, honestly, when he started talking politics, with Iran and everything. "I was kind of like, I just want to play football... "They just told us that we have to go, and I had no choice but to go. "So I guess it was a cool experience, obviously being in the White House as a first time, it's always wonderful. "But I'm not one for the politics, so it wasn't that exciting." Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Plymouth Argyle issue cryptic response to shock Gareth Bale takeover links
Plymouth Argyle issue cryptic response to shock Gareth Bale takeover links The Welsh football great is reportedly part of a consortium bidding to take over the League One side Gareth Bale (Image: PA Wire ) Plymouth Argyle chief executive Andrew Parkinson has refused to rule out reports linking Gareth Bale with a sensational move into football club ownership, describing the former Real Madrid star's involvement in a takeover bid as "speculation" at this stage. Stories first published by The Telegraph earlier this week claimed that a United States-based private equity group, fronted by Bale and involving members of the Storch family, was in discussions to purchase full control of the League One club. However, Parkinson was quick to dampen the excitement surrounding the links when questioned at new head coach Tom Cleverley's unveiling at Home Park on Thursday. 'That was really speculation,' Parkinson said. 'You would expect me to say that we are not in a position to be able to talk about any individuals or any investors, but of course when we have got the opportunity to do that we will do.' While neither confirming nor directly denying contact with Bale's consortium, Parkinson reiterated majority owner Simon Hallett's long-standing openness to external investment. Hallett revealed on May 31 that a year-long negotiation with a potential investor had collapsed, and that the club continues to seek the right partners for sustainable long-term growth. Article continues below 'I think Simon has said this numerous times, it's about getting the right people to be involved in the club for the long term,' Parkinson added. 'Simon and the other shareholders have committed for this season to do that and provide the right finances across the board. We will continue discussions for the long term.' The latest reports placed Bale as the public face of the American-led group and suggested he could even assume a chairman-style role if the bid succeeded—mirroring the involvement of former teammate Luka Modric, now a minority shareholder at Swansea City. The Welshman has been out of football since confirming his retirement back in January 2023, shortly after leading his side into the World Cup in Qatar, where they were unfortunately eliminated in the group stages. He finished his club career in the US playing for Los Angeles FC and still spends a lot of time in America. Other celebrity names below the Premier League include NFL legend Tom Brady, who purchased a stake in Birmingham City before they won promotion back to the Championship last season. Meanwhile, American golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas snapped up shares in Leeds United before the club sealed their return to the Premier League. Bale has no previous connection to Plymouth, and the move would clearly come as a huge surprise, although a takeover of the Pilgrims has seemingly been on the cards for some time. Argyle's leadership, however, appear to be keen to keep expectations in check as they attempt to stabilise after a turbulent 18 months that have included five head coaches and relegation from the Championship. Parkinson said the club remains focused on bouncing back under new boss Cleverley, while also building a more robust foundation behind the scenes. 'This is about the long term,' he said. 'It's about how we grow as a football club, how we develop, how we bring players on. We want long-term growth, not just going up and down.' For Bale, whose retirement in early 2023 ended a glittering playing career—including five Champions League titles and stints with Spurs, Real Madrid and LAFC—the links to Argyle mark the latest twist in his post-football evolution. While he's since built a profile as a businessman and pundit, a role in club ownership would represent a significant step into football's boardroom. Article continues below Whether that step will come at Home Park remains to be seen. For now, Plymouth are staying tight-lipped—and Bale's potential leap from superstar to chairman remains just that: potential.

Jon Jones makes shock admission about UFC future amid Tom Aspinall fight delay
Jones and Aspinall have been deep in negotiations over a potential fight - but the champion has received a lot of stick after publicly failing to commit to fighting the Brit UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones has handed Tom Aspinall a huge blow after admitting he doesn't care about fighting. Jones claimed the undisputed prize after defeating Ciryl Gane back in 2023. However, he has only defended the coveted belt once - a knockout victory over Stipe Miocic last November. Since then, both Jones and Aspinall have been deep in negotiations over a unification bout. However, as of yet, nothing has materialised. The American MMA veteran has received a lot of stick after publicly failing to commit to fighting Aspinall - who has not fought since defending his interim heavyweight title against Curtis Blaydes last July in Manchester. Recently, UFC president Dana White confirmed that the promotion will move on 'quickly' if Jones vs Aspinall has not been finalised in the next few weeks. While his latest interview was conducted prior to White's comments, it seems as if 'Bones' is very much uninterested in competing right now. 'I don't want to say that I'm retired because fighting's in my blood,' Jones told the Full Send podcast. 'Right now, I could really care less about fighting. I've been doing it my whole life at a very high level and when the itch comes back — and if it comes back — then I'll do it with my whole heart, do it to the best of my abilities. 'But right now, I look around and realise what's true, what's real. I see the way people look at me and the way I make people feel and it's an extraordinary thing. It's a true blessing. Now my job is to serve that, give that to my fans, be reachable, touchable. Let them know what I have inside. That's who I am right now. I've punched and kicked enough people.' As for Aspinall, Jones was quick to compliment the British star before sending a chilling warning: 'I think he's awesome,' Jones said about the interim heavyweight champion. 'I think he should go on and have a wonderful career. 'No, I don't think he needs me. I think when want something bad enough and if you get it, it can be the worst thing that ever happened to you.' Considering Jones' recent remarks, former dual-weight UFC champion Daniel Cormier has once again called for 'Bones' to be stripped and believe it is time for the heavyweight division to move on without the American as the champion. "It finally feels like we have some sort of idea of what he wants to do going forward," Cormier said on his YouTube channel. "Maybe it's just over. Sometimes you just know it's over... And when you know, you walk away. Unfortunately, he waited so long that it's going to look like it looks. So, right now it's time to strip him. Strip him. It's time to strip him." He added: "Ultimately it's time to strip him. He doesn't want to fight this guy. It does not sound like he's going to fight. It's time to take the belt. It's time to move on."
