Rocket sirens sound across central Israel as new Iranian barrage launched

Shafaq News4 hours ago

Shafaq News/ Rocket sirens sounded across central, northern, and southern Israel on Monday due to a new barrage of missiles launched from Iran.
According to Israel's Home Front Command, projectiles were detected over multiple regions, including Ashkelon and the coastal plain, prompting the army to instruct civilians to take shelter and remain in protected spaces until further notice.
Channel 12 reported it was the longest continuous activation of sirens since the start of hostilities with Iran, while Channel 13 noted that Israelis had spent more time in shelters today than at any other point in the war.
One missile reportedly struck a power company facility in southern Israel.
Israeli media said Iran has fired approximately 500 missiles and over 1,000 drones at Israeli territory since the conflict began. The sustained attacks have disrupted air traffic, with five flights forced to delay landing at Ben Gurion Airport, according to flight-tracking data from Flightradar.

Israeli strike on Tehran jail ‘irresponsible': French prisoner's sister

Paris – An Israeli strike on Evin prison in Tehran on Monday is completely irresponsible and puts prisoners 'in mortal danger', said Noemie Kohler, the sister of French national Cecile Kohler who is jailed there. Iran's judiciary said Israeli strikes left sections of the facility damaged and Israel's defence minister confirmed the army was targeting it. Cecile Kohler has been held along with her partner Jacques Paris in Evin since May 2022 on espionage charges their families reject. Overall, Iran is believed to hold around 20 European nationals in what some Western governments describe as a strategy of hostage-taking aimed at extracting concessions from the West. Most are held in Evin, a large, heavily fortified complex notorious among activists for rights abuses. It is located in a northern district of the Iranian capital. 'This strike is completely irresponsible. Cecile, Jacques and all the prisoners are in mortal danger,' Noemie Kohler told AFP. 'This is really the worst thing that could have happened,' she added. 'We have no news, we don't know if they are still alive, we're panicking,' Noemie Kohler said. She urged the French authorities to 'condemn these extremely dangerous strikes' and secure the release of the French prisoners. She also expressed concern about the risk of 'chaos' and 'riots'. Noemie Kohler has tirelessly campaigned to secure the release of her sister and her sister's partner Jacques Paris. Chirinne Ardakani, a lawyer for the Kohler family, denounced the strikes as 'illegal'. 'The risk of riots, general confusion and reprisals by the security forces against the insurgent prisoners raises fears of bloodshed,' she told AFP. 'Both sides are playing with people's lives.' The Iranian judiciary's website, Mizan Online, said that the prison buildings remained 'under control.'

Iraqi FM calls for regional committee to defuse crisis

Shafaq News/ Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein proposed the creation of an open-membership regional committee to facilitate dialogue and de-escalation in the Middle East. According to a statement from the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hussein took part in the June 20 emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers—held at Iraq's request—to discuss the implications of the Israeli attacks on Iranian territory. He also headed Iraq's delegation at the 51st session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held in Istanbul from June 21 to 22. During his remarks, Hussein warned that the ongoing Israeli escalation poses a serious threat not only to Iran but to the security and stability of the entire region. He urged Arab and Islamic states to take collective action to pressure international powers and develop joint initiatives to halt the crisis. As part of his initiative, Hussein proposed the formation of a joint regional committee with open membership, designed to maintain communication between regional states and help defuse tensions through dialogue. The final communiqué of the emergency Arab meeting condemned the Israeli assault and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to diplomacy. It also endorsed Hussein's proposal to form a committee under the framework of the OIC. The proposal was later presented at the OIC ministerial meeting, where it gained approval from member states. Hussein also emphasized the gravity of the continuing escalation, including the attacks on Gaza, and Iran, and repeated violations of Iraqi airspace, calling for concrete measures to prevent further destabilization in the region.
