Hong Kong , which has its currency pegged to the US dollar (USD), but the Asian financial hub still faces challenges in attracting major
blockchain businesses.

The Hong Kong dollar's peg to the US currency is seen as a unique advantage for the city, as the majority of stablecoin trading activity happens through cryptocurrencies backed by the US dollar. This can help smooth out business operations for companies whose main asset holdings are also pegged to the USD, including the largest stablecoins Tether (USDT) and Circle's USD Coin (USDC).
'Hong Kong has long been a global financial hub with a deep and liquid foreign exchange market, supported by a regulatory environment that facilitates currency conversion,' said David Katz, the Asia-Pacific vice-president of strategy and policy at Circle. 'Its peg to the US dollar and strong banking infrastructure make it an attractive location for USD conversions.'
The preference for US dollar-backed stablecoins is so strong that some have seen the technology has further entrenching the dollar's position in global finance, as a one-for-one peg requires a large reserve of the currency – something that is increasingly being enforced by law, including in Hong Kong with its
pending stablecoin regulation
'The reality is everybody, everywhere in the world – China and everywhere else included – wants dollars,' said Chris Maurice, CEO of the Africa-focused stablecoin exchange Yellow Card. 'This is why you have US$200 billion now in market cap in USD stablecoins.'

Per capita emissions in HK 'lower than in EU and US' Chief Executive John Lee said on Monday that Hong Kong is doing better in terms of lowering carbon emissions compared with the European Union and the United States. He made the comment at Greenway 2025, an event hosted by the EU's office in the SAR and the European Chamber of Commerce. Lee said Hong Kong has cut around a quarter of carbon emissions from its peak recorded in 2014. "In 2023, our per capita carbon emissions were about 4.58 tonnes," he said in a speech. "To put that in perspective, it is 60 percent of the EU's emissions, so we aren't doing too badly, and only one quarter of that of the United States." Lee said the SAR is well on its way to cutting its emissions in half by 2035 as it tried to reach its goal of achieving carbon neutrality before 2050. Hong Kong, he added, has made great strides in its efforts to be environmentally friendly, from green financing to turning to greener modes of transport. For example, he noted, some 110,000 electric vehicles were on the streets of Hong Kong by the end of last year, around seven times more than the figure five years ago. Subsidy programmes, Lee said, have also helped bus, taxi and ferry companies to go electric. The government is also working with the Airport Authority to set a target for using sustainable aviation fuel, which he said is much more environmentally friendly compared to conventional jet fuel. Lee went on to say that Hong Kong's country parks and biodiversity are very much part of the SAR's uniqueness, which is seen in few places globally. "This is Hong Kong's defining paradox, where business and ecology co-exist in symphony," he said. "For us, economic dynamism and environmental stewardship aren't just compatible. "They are dual engines propelling our future. We balance development with sustainability." Lee stressed that Hong Kong arranged 45 percent of the Asian market's green and sustainable bonds last year, marking the seventh consecutive year that the SAR was the biggest market in the region.

Why capital is flooding into Asia's emerging markets
In a year dominated by policy instability and asset repricing across developed economies, global capital is shifting course. The momentum now sits with Asia's emerging markets, where renewed economic strength, demographic force and valuation advantages are converging. Allocations are rising fast, as major institutional investors rewire their strategies toward regions with clearer prospects and fewer distortions. Much of this movement is driven by contrast. While political gridlock and policy unpredictability continue to define key developed markets, Asian economies are showing signs of coordination and forward planning. Central banks in countries like India, Indonesia and the Philippines adjusted rates earlier, took measured fiscal decisions and maintained external buffers. These policy choices are now being rewarded by markets. The investment case across Asia is also built on more than just macro discipline. Valuations remain compelling. Equity multiples across emerging Asia trade at steep discounts to long-term averages and to their global peers. This is drawing in funds that are tired of crowded trades and thin upside in overvalued sectors elsewhere. Portfolio managers are rotating into regions that offer both room for expansion and more clarity on direction. This is being reflected in the numbers. The latest data from global fund manager surveys shows allocations to emerging markets at their highest point in nearly two years. Within that, flows into Asia have dominated. From direct investment to sovereign debt to ESG-focused products, Asia is attracting capital across the spectrum. Supply chain realignment is accelerating this move. The tariff regime reintroduced by US President Donald Trump—targeting several Asian nations with steep import duties—is prompting strategic reassessments. Rather than pulling investment out of the region, the shift is reinforcing its importance. Firms are diversifying across multiple countries, with Vietnam, India, Malaysia and Bangladesh becoming core industrial hubs. Regional integration, more than global decoupling, is now the dominant theme. India is growing its influence quickly. The economy continues to post strong GDP growth, supported by rising domestic consumption, digital infrastructure expansion and steady market reforms. Vietnam is another standout. Manufacturing exports are rising, capital investment is climbing, and institutional interest is scaling up. Across Southeast Asia, demographic depth and upward mobility are building a long-term consumption story that's already underway. Attention is also turning to less conventional destinations. Central Asian markets like Uzbekistan are gaining serious interest. Investment banks have highlighted its external debt as a strong pick, underpinned by rising gold revenues, a smaller fiscal gap and upgrades to sovereign credit ratings. The country's economic profile—low debt levels, strong resource backing, and an increasingly modern regulatory framework—is turning it into a surprising beneficiary of broader market reallocation. Investors are also taking notice of ESG-linked opportunities. Asia's emerging economies are becoming core components of new green and social bond funds launched by some of the world's biggest financial institutions. These products are driving institutional re-engagement with regions that were previously underweighted. Asian issuers are proving that ESG-linked capital can be matched with credible projects and policy backing. Currency risks, policy friction and election cycles will remain part of the picture. But investors are recalibrating how they assess such risks. Price dislocations, cleaner balance sheets and increasing regional coordination are tilting the scales. Capital isn't chasing novelty, it's moving toward resilience, scale and depth. And emerging Asia offers that in ways few other regions can. The region's markets are liquid, its governments are investing in infrastructure and technology, and its economies are participating more actively in the realignment of global trade and finance. Investors are no longer benchmarking Asia against old models; they're assessing it on its own terms. And this reweighting is gaining speed. The shift in capital is visible, deliberate, and likely to accelerate. Asia is asserting itself as a primary arena for global investment, with momentum, increasing policy clarity and structural demand on its side.

Hong Kong Originals: The 85-year-old flask brand that bears witness to rise and fall of city's manufacturing era
As Hong Kong's economic boom faded and manufacturing moved to China, some long-established, family-run companies preserved their traditions as others innovated to survive. In our new series, HKFP documents the craftsmanship and spirit behind the goods that are still proudly 'Made in Hong Kong,' as local firms navigate the US-China trade war. Few guests staying at the Camlux Hotel in Hong Kong would know that a giant glass furnace once lay beneath where they are spending the night. The Kowloon Bay hotel was formerly the factory building of Camel, an 85-year-old local metal kitchenware brand. The company moved into the premises in 1986 and vacated the property in 2013. Four years later, Camel opened a hotel in its place as part of a government revitalisation plan for the industrial district. Speaking to HKFP at the hotel on Monday, Raymond Leung – Camel's third-generation director – said his grandfather, Leung Tsoo-hing, founded the company Wei Yit Vacuum Flask Manufactory in 1940 after seeing a demand for vacuum flasks. Back then, electricity was a luxury, and few households had fridges and kettles. An insulating container thus emerged as a common household item for keeping drinks hot or cold. 'Being Chinese, being Asian, we drink a lot of hot drinks,' the younger Leung said, adding that his grandfather – who had been exporting vacuum flasks from Hong Kong to Penang, Malaysia – 'wanted to create his own brand of thermal flasks.' The brand name 'Camel' was chosen to reflect the flask's function and the company's resilience. Camel became one of the few manufacturers to make flasks with an inner glass wall allowing the container better insulation than those with just a metal body, said Leung, 47. Over the years, Camel has sold vacuum flasks, coffee tumblers, water bottles, food jars and more, discontinuing some products and launching others as consumers' preferences shifted alongside the changing times. Its products are not only available at shops and department stores in Hong Kong but are also sold in Southeast Asia. Camel is the only vacuum flask brand still being manufactured in Hong Kong, Leung told HKFP. Throughout its 80-plus-year history, Camel has gone through landmark moments in Hong Kong's history, including the Japanese invasion during World War II, which halted its production, and the post-war manufacturing boom. When Leung's grandfather created the first vacuum flask prototype in the 1940s, its parts – from the glass walls to the rubber connecting pieces – were sourced in Hong Kong. Today, like many of the city's homegrown brands, part of Camel's production takes place across the border in mainland China – a move that is neither new nor avoidable, the director said. Former manufacturing hub Hong Kong saw its manufacturing heyday from the 1950s to the 1970s, with factories – concentrated in areas such as Sham Shui Po, Mong Kok, Kowloon City and Western – producing everything from clothes and toys to watches and electronics. Its rise as an export-oriented economy came amid World War II's destruction of industrial bases in Europe and America. Hong Kong seized the opportunity, resuming production and supplying goods to the world. The director's father, Philip Leung, studied engineering in the UK and later completed a postgraduate degree in glass technology. He returned to the city in the 1960s, when he was in his late 20s, to help with the family business. 'He wanted to bring back the knowledge from the Western world,' Raymond Leung said. Under Philip Leung's leadership, Camel ramped up its manufacturing, expanding its production of metal flasks, ice buckets, and plate covers to supply hotels around the world. In the 1980s and 1990s, Hong Kong's manufacturing industry began losing its edge to mainland China, as the latter modernised under the government's reform policies. Many companies in the city relocated their production across the border, attracted by cheaper labour and other costs, but the Leungs stayed put. While minor parts were sourced from mainland China, Camel products' main components were always made in-house. But over the decades, it became clear that it would not last. In 2006, Camel turned off its glass furnace, which was operating on the third floor of what is now the Camlux Hotel, for good. The company was unable to find enough people to operate the furnace after some of its workers passed away. 'Because it's a furnace, you can't turn it off. It has to run 24 hours, otherwise the glass will solidify,' Raymond Leung said. 'We didn't have enough people to fill a day's shifts.' 'It would've been a natural end to Camel, but we discussed it as a family, and my father wanted to persevere,' he added. 'So we had to source the glass from the mainland. [It was] better than just quitting,' he said. The company now checks the glass and all its other raw materials before assembling the products in its factory in Hung Hom. Meanwhile, at Camel's other factory in San Po Kong, workers are in charge of cutting large pieces of metal and moulding plastic. Moving on Leung said Camel's reality was no different from many brands, whether in Hong Kong or abroad. 'Even something like BMW and Mercedes, which are synonymous with Germany, it's very rare you can make a complete product without some kind of [overseas] supplier,' he said. The director, however, says the company still tries to promote Hong Kong 'as much as possible.' Over the past two years, Camel has hosted design competitions inviting the public to submit Hong Kong-themed illustrations. The winning designs were printed onto Camel's signature flasks and added to the company's product collection. Last year's first-place prize went to a red, white and blue design – a nod to the traditional Hong Kong nylon canvas bags – that featured the city's icons, including a pawn shop sign, a cha chaan teng cup, and the city's tram. 'Doing the competitions is a way for us to engage more local talent,' Leung said. People have asked Leung if Camel, with such a long history, would reissue some of its 'nostalgic' products – like the big flasks for households that were common in the past. The director said he 'wasn't completely against' the idea, but he preferred the company to innovate new products instead. In recent years, Camel has launched coffee tumblers and sports water bottles inspired by new trends in the market. 'You can't always go back to your archive,' Leung said. 'You have to move on.'
