Chris Pollard takes two key Duke players with him to Virginia
Not a great start to the post-Chris Pollard era of Duke Blue Devils baseball. Star player AJ Gracia and Kyle Johnson are both heading to Virginia to join Pollard with the Cavaliers. It stings when you lose any player to the transfer portal, but it feels like a double dose when they go to a fellow ACC rival.
Gracia hit 15 home runs this past season and drove in 54 runs while batting .293 and drew 57 walks. Last season, he ended the year with 14 home runs and 58 RBIs. He was a career .299 batter for the Blue Devils, and now he takes his talents to Charlottesville.
Johnson is a Virginia native and will return to his home state with the Cavaliers. The two-way player finished the year 4-4 with 43 strikeouts to 26 walks. His ERA was a bit high at 7.19. He added four home runs and 19 RBIs as a hitter for Duke this past season.
Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball reported the news of Gracia and Johnson following Pollard.
The Blue Devils have yet to name a replacement for Pollard as the new head coach of Duke baseball, but many believe it will be Josh Jordan, who is currently the assistant coach at LSU. He was a long-time assistant under Pollard with the Blue Devils from 2012 to 2022. He helped LSU win a national championship, and many hope he will bring that level of aspiration to Durham.

ESPN analyst Jay Bilas reveals what he likes best about projected No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg

Cooper Flagg is on the verge of becoming the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA draft, and the National College Player of the Year recently earned praise from ESPN analyst Jay Bilas. Flagg led Duke to the Final Four, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks on 38.5% shooting from 3-point range. He became the 22nd player in program history to be named a consensus first-team All-American. The 6-foot-8 forward established himself as the overwhelming favorite to be the No. 1 pick because of his size, athleticism and ability to affect games on both ends of the court. Bilas, speaking on the "Awful Announcing" podcast with Brandon Contes, named his favorite trait about Flagg. The one thing that stands out about Cooper Flagg, to me, above all others, and we can talk about the attributes -- physically, athletically, how he shoots it, how he handles it, how he passes it and how he defends -- but the thing I like about him best is he is not one who is interested in numbers. What he does is he makes the right play on that play and then he winds up stacking the right play over and over again and then by the end of the game, he has compiled really impressive numbers. Flagg entered the season with tremendous expectations as the consensus top recruit in the class of 2024. He was highly touted as the likely top pick in the draft and lived up to the hype after becoming the face of the sport this past season. The 18-year-old led the Blue Devils in total points (709), rebounds (277), assists (156) and blocks per game. He is highly regarded for his ability to process plays in real-time and his decision-making with the ball in his hands, while also constantly adding new skills to his arsenal. After trading away cornerstone Luka Dončić, the Dallas Mavericks hope Flagg can step in and be their long-term solution. Should Flagg indeed hear his name called first on Wednesday, the ACC Freshman of the Year will become the sixth Blue Devil to be selected as the top pick. "I think he is the best freshman Duke has ever had, and that is saying something given the freshmen that Duke has had over the last 30-40 years, maybe even beyond that," Bilas said. "He is barely 18 years old right now, and the polish and maturity he shows... People talk about will Dallas trade the pick, I just can't imagine a scenario where you trade that because he is the future for them."

Bill Belichick claims CBS secretly aimed camera at Jordon Hudson during interview

Yes, if Bill Belichick had simply taken a job at Duke, there's much we would never know. But because he opted to take a job with a public and not a private institution, his communications with North Carolina officials are fair game. On Friday, WRAL posted an item featuring quotes from some of the documents it has obtained through public-records requests. They focus on the aftermath of the disastrous CBS interview, which included Belichick's girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, instructing him not to answer the question of how they met. Belichick previously has accused CBS of editing the interview to create a 'false narrative' regarding Hudson's perceived effort to control the conversation. In a message to Beth Keith, a senior associate vice chancellor in the office of university communication at North Carolina, Belichick claims that CBS surreptitiously recorded video of Hudson during the interview of Belichick. 'Secretly, CBS had a camera focused on Jordon where Lead producer Gabe instructed her to sit,' Belichick wrote to Keith. Belichick also explained that Hudson attended the interview because Simon & Schuster publicist David Kass was not present. Earlier this month, someone from Belichick's camp (possibly, Hudson herself) leaked various allegations to about Kass's role in the interview debacle. Belichick persists in his claim that questions unrelated to his book were not supposed to be asked during the interview with Tony Dokoupil of CBS. 'For approximately 35 uninterrupted minutes, Tony asked questions about the book,' Belichick wrote. 'Then, the questions shifted to other subjects that were not related to the Art of Winning, which we had outlined as off-limits with my book publicist.' The communications with UNC also include an explanation from Belichick as to how he and Hudson met — and as to why she shut down the question. 'I met Jordon randomly on a flight to Palm Beach in 2021,' Belichick wrote. 'That is no secret. Jordon was not dodging the specific question regarding how we met, but rather was preventing the interview from continuing to probe into personal matters.' It really would be useful to see the full interview, so that the reasonableness of Hudson's apparent 'enough is enough' interjection could be assessed. Why won't CBS post the full interview? It would leave no doubt as to what happened during what should have been a slo-pitch softball session, and as to how often Hudson interrupted. While this isn't another example of Belichick or Hudson kicking a sleeping dog and pushing a dormant story back into the news cycle, the release of the communications received now by the media is a natural consequence of Belichick taking a job with a public institution.

4 Teams Have Won an NBA Finals Game 7 on The Road. Will the Pacers be the 5th?

On Sunday night in Oklahoma, the Indiana Pacers have a chance to accomplish a feat that only four other teams in the history of the NBA have done: Win an NBA Finals Game 7 on the road. After winning Game 6 to force a Game 7 in Oklahoma City, the Pacers kept their championship hopes alive. If they go on to win it, not only would they win the first NBA Finals in Indiana Pacers' history, but they join a short list of teams that snatched the trophy out of the hands of an opponent playing in front of their crowd, in the security of their arena. Which four teams have won an NBA Finals Game 7 on the road? Cleveland Cavaliers (2016) One of the greatest comebacks in NBA history was capped with a Game 7 win on the road. The Cavaliers trailed the Golden State Warriors three games to one, but were able to pull out victories in Game 5 in The Bay and a Game 6 at home. That set up a winner-take-all showdown in Oracle Arena. Not only had the Warriors achieved the best overall regular-season record, 73-9, but they were 39-2 at home, making it improbable that the Cavaliers would take two in a row from them in front of their crowd. But, the Cavaliers defied the odds and, behind Kyrie Irving's clutch jump shot and LeBron James' chase-down block, beat the Warriors to win Game 7 of the NBA Finals on the road, and celebrated Cleveland's first NBA Championship in front of the fans wearing yellow and royal blue. Washington Bullets (1978) The 38-year gap between teams winning Game 7 of the NBA Finals on the road shows just how difficult of a task it is to complete. Home teams went 7-0 between the Bullets and the Cavaliers' victories and, in that time, the Bullets changed their name to the Washington Wizards (officially in 1997) and their opponent in the 1978 Finals went from the Seattle Supersonics to the Oklahoma City Thunder. But, back to '78. The Bullets dominated the Supersonics 117-82, giving them momentum for a Game 7 in Seattle. But that final game was a dogfight, in which Wes Unseld scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Bob Dandrige scored 19 points and Charles Johnson came off the bench to complement an entire team effort with 19 points of his own. The Bullets would win the game and the series, 105-99. Boston Celtics (1974) The Celtics actually had a chance to close out the Milwuakee Bucks in the Boston Garden in Game 6, but couldn't get it done. John Havlicek hit a jumper to send the game into overtime, and put-back his own miss in the first overtime to force a second OT. The lead changed 11 times in the second OT, but Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had the final say with his patented sky-hook, which gave the Bucks a 102-101 win and set up a Game 7 in Milwaukee. In that deciding game, Havlicek struggled but Bostons' other star, Dave Cowens, stepped up with a 28-point, 14-rebound performance to lead the Celtics to an NBA Finals Game 7 win on the road. Boston Celtics (1969) One of the classic championships in NBA history between two of the premier franchises was decided with a Game 7 on the road. For the first six games of the series, it went as planned with the Los Angeles Lakers winning Games 1, 2 and 5 in The Forum, and the Celtics winning Games 3, 4, and 6 in the Garden. But, in Game 7, the Celtics eked out an improbable road victory. Not even a 42-point performance from Lakers' guard Jerry West was enough to stop the Celtics from spoiling the Hollywood ending. Could the Pacers become the fifth team to win Game 7 of the NBA Finals on the road? A theme for each of these four road shockers is that they were close games. While the Pacers blew out the Thunder in Game 6, it would be surprising if they did that again at the PayCom Center, in front of Oklahoma City's feverish crowd. Indiana doesn't need to win in blowout fashion, though, and they've shown they can win in a variety of ways — improbable comebacks, buzzer-beaters, defensive rockfights, offensive shootouts. All of the above would suffice. To win, Indiana needs to take care of the ball and not let Oklahoma City's defense dictate the pace. If they can establish their fast-paced, ball-movement style without turning the ball over, they'll have every chance to beat the Thunder and become the fifth team in NBA history to hoist the trophy following a Game 7 victory in their opponent's arena.
