Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has claimed that humans will be able to 'colonise the galaxy', starting 2030, with artificial intelligence (AI) being the driving force behind this revolution. The 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry winner said AI tools will turbocharge human productivity and lead us to far and away lands in the universe.
Mr Hassabis said the 'golden era' was only five years away, with AI models set to bring about a renaissance in human existence.
"If everything goes well, then we should be in an era of radical abundance, a kind of golden era. AGI can solve what I call root-node problems in the world, curing terrible diseases, much healthier and longer lifespans, finding new energy sources," said Mr Hassabis in an interview with WIRED, referring to human-level AI, popularly known as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
"If that all happens, then it should be an era of maximum human flourishing, where we travel to the stars and colonise the galaxy. I think that will begin to happen in 2030," he added.
Quizzed if the abundance will still lead to unequal distribution as is the condition today, Mr Hassabis said AI will make "things feel like a non-zero-sum game".
AGI's future
While AGI may help humanity unlock new frontiers, Mr Hassabis has previously talked about society not being ready for it and that the technology and its perils keep him up at night.
"It's a sort of like probability distribution. But it's [AGI] coming, either way it's coming very soon and I'm not sure society's quite ready for that yet. And we need to think that through and also think about these issues that I talked about earlier, to do with the controllability of these systems and also the access to these systems and ensuring that all goes well," said Mr Hassabis.
He has also called for the establishment of a UN-like umbrella organisation to oversee AGI's development.
"I would advocate for a kind of CERN for AGI, and by that, I mean a kind of international research-focused high-end collaboration on the frontiers of AGI development to try and make that as safe as possible," he added.

The Airshow also reflected Europe's push for sovereignty amid doubts about U.S. security commitments, with Vago Muradian, founder of the Defense & Aerospace Report, quoted by Reuters saying, "The big story of this show is sovereignty in the wake of some of the statements by (Trump) questioning U.S. commitment to Europe and to NATO." Founder of SoftBank Group, Masayoshi Son, has proposed plans to set up a massive AI and robotics manufacturing industrial zone in Arizona. The endeavour could likely cost a whopping $1 trillion if it reaches its full scale. Reportedly, the project was earlier known as Project Crystal Land and aims at building infrastructure for AI systems and robotics. According to reports, Son has discussed the project with Samsung, chipmaker TSMC, and the Trump administration. Dubbed the Arizona AI megaproject, it aims to set up a Shenzhen-like manufacturing hub for robotics and AI. This aligns with US President Donald Trump's vision of bringing high-tech production back to America. Project Crystal Land envisions a futuristic industrial park specially designed to build AI-powered industrial robots and accelerate AI technologies. The project aims to rival China's Shenzhen, which is widely known as a hub for innovation and manufacturing excellence. As of now the AI arms race is intense, with the US and China in the fray, and this project could likely catapult the Grand Canyon State into the global arena as a centre for high-tech production. The project is in line with the multinational investment holding company's aggressive strategy for investing in AI. This comes after the company pledged a $19 billion investment to the ambitious $500 billion Stargate AI infrastructure project flagged off by Trump along with Son, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Larry Ellison of Oracle earlier this year. As part of its strategy, SoftBank Group recently pushed $40 billion into OpenAI and acquired Ampere Computing for $6.5 billion. Project Crystal Land, if materialised, would include research and development labs and production facilities focused on Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), processing of advanced semiconductors, tech workforce housing, and a likely integration with smart grid infrastructure. Reportedly, SoftBank is eyeing involving TSMC in its grand initiative. TSMC has been instrumental in fabricating processors for NVIDIA. The Taiwanese company currently plans to invest about $165 billion in total in its US projects; however, reports indicate that this is unrelated to SoftBank's proposed project. Similarly, Samsung Electronics has also been approached for the project. Reportedly, discussions between SoftBank and federal and state government officials are underway to gain support for Project Crystal Land. Son has reportedly met US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and other officials to mull over likely tax incentives and regulatory nods that may support the development of thesemassive complex. The discussions follow Trump's vision to revive American manufacturing capabilities and bring jobs back to the US. However, the success of this project would largely depend on a favourable regulatory environment and gaining support from the US government. Following the reports of the proposed collaboration, SoftBank' shares soared as much as 2 per cent, and TSMC's stock witnessed a hike of 1.9 per cent. When it comes to financing this mega trillion-dollar project, SoftBank will likely follow a model that is similar to oil pipeline funding, essentially reducing its upfront capital needs while at the same time using the company's present $23 billion liquidity and its stake in Arms Holdings as collateral. Reportedly, its project-based approach will enable SoftBank to gain additional funding without stressing its immediate financial resources.

Federighi humorously answered using a memorable analogy: "We don't want to build sporks." Speaking to MacStories' Federico Viticci in an interview, Federighi explained Apple's philosophy behind not merging the two popular Apple products. "Someone said, 'If a spoon's great and a fork's great, then let's combine them into a single utensil, right?' It turns out it's not a good spoon and it's not a good fork. It's a bad idea. And so we don't want to build sporks," Federighi said. This analogy clearly explains Apple's belief that merging the two devices or operating systems will compromise the strengths of the devices and will also make the product less useful. Federighi further explained that Apple's main aim is to make both iPad and Mac excel in their respective areas and the company does not want the iPad to displace a Mac. He also said that this time the iPadOS 26 introduced many useful and improved features such as new windowing engine and desktop-like features, but these features are designed to cater to the needs of a broader range of iPad users. The main focus is to improve the capabilities of an iPad without compromising on its identity. Federighi also talked about the growth of multitasking functionality in the iPadOS. He described evolution as a multi-year journey of experimentation. He added that if Apple had introduced traditional Mac-like menu bars on the iPad, developers might have designed their apps differently, which could have compromised the iPad app ecosystem. While the two platforms can "be inspired by elements of the Mac" and vice-versa, Federighi firmly believes that a full merger would lead to a messy, confusing, and ultimately inferior user experience .
