Benzema's last-gasp winner puts Al-Ittihad top of Saudi Pro League

Benzema's last-gasp winner puts Al-Ittihad top of Saudi Pro League

Arab News06-02-2025

Karim Benzema left it late, but gave Al-Ittihad a 2-1 win at Al-Taawoun on Thursday that sent the Tigers three points clear at the top of the Saudi Pro League.
The Frenchman's 95th-minute strike means that Al-Ittihad now lead Al-Hilal, although the Riyadh giants have a game in hand.
Al-Ittihad's in-form Abdulrahman Al-Oboud put the visitors ahead after 21 minutes, pouncing quickly on a rebound.
Coach Laurent Blanc thought he was taking his team back into the dressing room at the break with a lead, but 10 minutes into added time at the end of the first half, Musa Barrow equalized for the Buraidah club.
Faycal Fajr floated over a corner from the left that found Barrow unmarked at the far side of the area. His low volley took a deflection from Danilo Pereira to go past Predrag Rajkovic and into the back of the net.
The nine-time champions then poured forward in an attempt to get the win, but it proved to be a frustrating second half with a penalty decision overturned by VAR and the woodwork intervening.
However, five minutes into added time, Benzema grabbed his 14th goal of the season to move just one goal behind Cristiano Ronaldo at the top of the standings.
Houssem Aouar burst free through the middle and then slipped a clever pass into the left side of the area for the former Real Madrid marksman to send a left-footed first-time shot into the back of the net and send the traveling fans into raptures. It was a dramatic end to the game and perhaps a crucial one in the title race.
Al-Hilal will go back into pole position if they beat Damac on Saturday.

Preview: Al-Hilal Launch Club World Cup Bid Against Real Madrid

Saudi giants Al-Hilal will officially commence Italian coach Simone Inzaghi's era when they face European powerhouse Real Madrid in Group H of the FIFA Club World Cup at Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday. Real Madrid also head into the tournament under new management. They recently appointed Xabi Alonso following his departure from Bayer Leverkusen. Inzaghi departed Inter Milan just weeks ago following their heavy Champions League final loss. His successful four-year tenure included one Serie A title plus four domestic cups. Al-Hilal appointed him swiftly after their second-place league finish behind Al-Ittihad. Inzaghi must reclaim the Saudi title next season starting now. Formidable Challenge for Riyadh Side Real Madrid present an incredibly tough opening test for Al-Hilal, since the Spanish giants boast a record fifteen European Cup triumphs. Al-Hilal remain clear underdogs facing the mighty Madrid squad. Nevertheless, their potent attack netted ninety-five league goals last season. They recall scoring three times during the 2023 final loss. Real Madrid endured a trophyless domestic season under Carlo Ancelotti who subsequently departed early for the Brazil national team job. Alonso returns to his former club after leaving Bayer Leverkusen, seeking his first trophy immediately adding Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Madrid-based side aim for their sixth Club World Cup title. Team News and Tactical Notes As for Al-Hilal, Inzaghi will likely implement his favoured 3-5-2 formation, which may require some adjustment from the Riyadh-based side's squad. Bono should feature between the posts, as the former Sevilla goalkeeper will be shielded by Kalidou Koulibaly, Hassan Tambakti, and Ali Al-Bulayhi. Aleksandar Mitrovic will be one of Al-Hilal's main attacking threats, as he scored 28 goals in 36 competitive appearances in the 2024-25 campaign. Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, David Alaba, Eduardo Camavinga, and Ferland Mendy have all travelled to the USA despite their injury issues. However, the quintet are unlikely to play a role in Wednesday's contest, though defender Antonio Rudiger is doubtful after undergoing meniscus surgery in April. Brazilian forward Endrick is not expected to play in the tournament after sustaining a hamstring injury last month. However, Alexander-Arnold and Huijsen are both set to make their highly-anticipated debuts following their arrivals from Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively. Alonso also revealed that his French star Kylian Mbappe is doubtful for the game due to illness, which could be a huge blow for the Spanish giants, who would hope to replicate his form from his first La Liga campaign. Possible Starting Lineups: Real Madrid: Courtois; Alexander-Arnold, Nacho, Rudiger, Garcia; Valverde, Tchouameni, Bellingham; Rodrygo, Vinicius Jr., Guler Al-Hilal: Bono; Tambakti, Koulibaly, Al-Bulayhi; Cancelo, Kanno, Neves, Milinkovic-Savic, Al-Dawsari; Malcom, Mitrovic Real Madrid and Al-Hilal previously met in the competition's final in Morocco in February 2023, claiming a 5-3 victory, with doubles from Vinicius Junior and Federico Valverde. Los Blancos will now look to add a new trophy to their growing silverware cabinet, as they also aim to increase the gap with their arch-rivals Barcelona, who claimed the tournament's title three times. Meanwhile, the Riyadh giants will enter motivated to exceed past performances and possibly lift their first ever Club World Cup title. Short link : Post Views: 8

Thmanyah wins Saudi football broadcast rights for five years

The Saudi Pro League, the First Division League, and the Saudi Football Federation announced today, June 14, the awarding of exclusive broadcasting rights for Saudi football tournaments in the Middle East and North Africa to Thmanyah Publishing and Distribution. The rights include coverage of the following competitions, King Cup, Saudi Pro League (Roshn League), Saudi Super Cup, and First Division League (Yelo League). Thmanyah will broadcast the matches from the 2025/2026 season through 2030/2031. The matches will be broadcasted freely via newly launched satellite channels and subscription-based packages that offer additional benefits, delivered through an integrated digital and television experience. The concerned parties confirmed that the selection of Thmanyah, a subsidiary of the Saudi Research and Media Group (SRMG), came after both local and international competition. This was based on criteria such as technical capability, content and distribution quality, and alignment with strategic goals to enhance media presence and financial sustainability for the tournaments.
