Senior govt officer claims trial to misusing RM200,000 in Felda programme funds
Azlan Johar pleaded not guilty at the Shah Alam sessions court today to misappropriating RM200,000 meant for Felda community programmes.
SHAH ALAM : A senior government officer has claimed trial in the sessions court here today for allegedly misappropriating RM200,000 in government funds meant for Felda community programmes.
Azlan Johar, who previously served under the Prime Minister's Department, was accused of dishonestly handing over the sum to his elder brother for the latter's personal use.
The alleged offence took place at Jalan Medan PB 2A, Seksyen 9 in Bandar Baru Bangi.
The charge was framed under Section 403 of the Penal Code, which provides between six months and five years in jail, a fine, and possible whipping, if found guilty.
Judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud granted Azlan bail of RM25,000 with one surety and ordered him to surrender his passport until the case is resolved.
Case management is scheduled for July 23.
Separately, in the same court, a managing director for an umrah tour firm also pleaded not guilty to a similar charge involving RM128,399.19 belonging to another travel company.
Anas Naem allegedly committed the offence at the Affin Islamic Bank branch in Jalan Elektron U16/J, Seksyen U16 here. He was also charged under Section 403.
The court granted him bail of RM25,000 with two sureties and ordered him to surrender his passport. His case management is fixed for June 25.
Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin appeared for the prosecution, while Azlan and Anas were represented by lawyers Zainal Omar and Kausar Khairi, respectively.

AGC denies ‘flawed prosecution' claims after Najib's DNAA in second SRC case, delays due to overlapping cases
KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 — The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has dismissed as baseless allegations that it carried out a 'flawed prosecution' in the second SRC International Sdn Bhd case involving Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. In a statement, the AGC reiterated its firm commitment to upholding the rule of law and stated that it would continue to fulfill its responsibilities under the Federal Constitution with integrity, fairness and respect for the judicial process. However, the AGC acknowledged the decision by High Court Judge K Muniandy to grant Najib a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) on three charges of money laundering involving RM27 million in funds from the company. 'The case was registered in the High Court on Feb 7, 2019, and scheduled for trial on five occasions: June 2020, July to August 2021, March to April 2022, September 2024 and April to May 2025. 'However, all trial dates were postponed due to the Movement Control Order caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, requests by the defence, or applications by the prosecution itself,' the statement read. According to the statement, the prosecution's requests for postponement were due to the ongoing trial of the first SRC case, which proceeded at the High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court until its completion on March 31, 2023. At the same time, the trial proceedings for the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case had also begun while the first SRC case was still ongoing. 'Both cases involved overlapping material documents required for the second SRC trial. 'As these documents were critical to the second SRC case, the prosecution had no choice but to wait until they were available, which was until the 1MDB trial proceedings were completed. 'It must be emphasised that the material documents are available but are currently being used as evidence in the ongoing 1MDB trial,' the AGC said. The AGC further stated that the prosecution had requested additional time to gather all relevant material documents to be presented as evidence in the second SRC trial. 'This delay was not intentional but was to ensure the integrity of the documents as evidence in the trial is preserved,' the statement read. Earlier today, Judge Muniandy, in granting Najib a DNAA on the three charges, stated that the case had been pending for six years since 2019, without any witness testimony being presented, having faced multiple postponements, which indicated that the prosecution was not ready to proceed with the trial. On Feb 3, 2019, Najib claimed trial to three charges of money laundering by accepting illegal proceeds amounting to RM27 million through his three AmPrivate Banking accounts at AmIslamic Bank Berhad, AmBank Group Building, Jalan Raja Chulan on July 8, 2014. The former Pekan MP was charged under Section 4 (1) (a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001, which is punishable by a maximum fine of RM5 million or imprisonment of up to five years, or both upon conviction. Najib is currently serving a jail term in Kajang Prison for the misappropriation of RM42 million in the SRC International funds case. On Sept 2, 2022, he filed a petition for a royal pardon, which led to the Pardons Board halving his jail term from 12 to six years and reducing the fine from RM210 million to RM50 million on Jan 29, 2024. — Bernama

Siblings of alleged abuse victim placed in grandparents' care, say Perlis authorities
KANGAR, June 21 — The elder brother and younger sister of an 11-year-old girl believed to have been abused by their biological parents are now under the care of their paternal grandparents, while the victim is still being treated at the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital (HTF) here. Perlis Social Welfare Department (JKM) director Ku Chik Ku Mat Esa said the department would take steps to obtain an interim custody order and identify suitable family members to care for the children. If no suitable guardian is found, they will be placed under JKM's care. 'Perlis JKM has sent a counsellor to meet the victim's siblings, a 12-year-old brother and a one-year-old sister, who are now with their paternal grandparents and are in good condition,' he told reporters after the Perlis state government's monthly assembly, here today. Ku Chik said the 11-year-old girl is currently under the care of HTF Paediatric Unit, where doctors are treating her injuries and assessing her cognitive development. Meanwhile, he said the department would also be meeting other family members to assess their acceptance of the situation and any trauma they may be experiencing. On Thursday, Bernama reported that police detained a married couple at a house in Arau early yesterday morning on suspicion of abusing their 11-year-old biological daughter since 2023. The couple has been remanded for six days starting yesterday for further investigation. Arau district police chief Supt Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi was quoted as saying that the 37-year-old couple was arrested at 1.30 am after Perlis JKM received a complaint from a member of the public. Man dies after suspected beating over motorcycle noise dispute in Tanah Merah, say police
TANAH MERAH, June 20 — A 60-year-old local man has been confirmed dead, believed to have been beaten in Kampung Buloh Ipoh, here, yesterday. Tanah Merah district police chief, Supt Mohd Haki Hasbullah confirmed the incident and said further investigations were still underway and details of the incident would follow. 'The victim's body has been taken to Tanah Merah Hospital for a post-mortem,' he told Bernama today. Meanwhile, a villager who only wanted to be known as Solah, 40, said the incident occurred following a fight between the victim and the suspect. 'Before the incident, I had a chance to chat with the victim because his house was right in front of mine. He looked normal and managed to reprimand several villagers. 'I only became aware of the incident when I saw the presence of many police officers and residents at the scene of the incident which was about 100 metres from his house,' he told Bernama at the scene of the incident. According to him, he rushed to the location and was shocked to see the victim dead with facial injuries. Solah also said the victim lived with his 78-year-old mother and has never caused any problems with villagers. 'I understand the incident stemmed from the victim's reprimand over the noise of the suspect's motorcycle.
