Platense claim1st Argentine Apertura title

Observer03-06-2025

SANTIAGO DEL ESTERO, Argentina: While many football fans drooled over the prospect of an Apertura final between giants Boca Juniors and River Plate, the title will instead be contested by Huracan and Platense, two hungry sides chasing history in a rare decider.
After decades spent in the shadow of the country's heavyweights, Huracan are chasing their first league title in over 50 years, with Sunday's final set for the Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero.
Platense secured their first top-flight Argentine Apertura tournament title on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Huracan thanks to a second-half goal from Guido Mainero.
Platense's first major trophy since promotion in 2021 followed a brilliant run as giant-killers, led by the coaching duo of Sergio Gomez and Favio Orsi.
"It's crazy, but we were convinced we could do it. The only thing I would have liked is to celebrate it with my father, it is a very big emotion. It cost us a lot to get here, but to be champions we had to beat them all and that's what we did," coach Orsi told broadcaster ESPN after the match.
Regarded as a dark horse, the Argentine side, who have spent over two decades oscillating between the lower divisions, ended Racing Club's six-game unbeaten run in the round of 16, shocked River Plate in a penalty shootout at the Monumental Stadium, and edged past San Lorenzo 1-0 in the semi-finals.
In a tense match at the packed Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades, Huracan dominated the early stages. Agustin Urzi drove them forward in the first half, while Eric Ramirez came closest to scoring with a header from a Matko Miljevic cross.
UNDERDOGS
Platense, who surprised many by sneaking into the knockout stages with a sixth-place finish in Group B, broke the deadlock shortly after the hour mark.
Mainero's unstoppable long-range shot, capitalising on a rebound from an Ignacio Vazquez header, went past Huracan goalkeeper Hernan Galindez and ultimately secured the win.
"I couldn't believe it when the ball went in, it was amazing. It's thanks to the group, to the team, to these people, to our fans, it's pure happiness. We are a humble group and I think we deserved it for everything we did in the tournament," Mainero said.
"I dedicate this goal to my wife and my daughters who are there when things go wrong, of course also to my father, my brother and some friends who came today."
Huracan failed to find an equaliser, and Walter Mazzantti's injury, which halted the game for a few minutes, ended their hopes of winning the domestic league for the first time in over 50 years.. — Reuters

Inter Milan, Dortmund claim first wins at CWC

PHILADELPHIA: Inter Milan came from behind to beat Urawa Red Diamonds and knock the Japanese side out of the Club World Cup (CWC) on Saturday, while Borussia Dortmund held off Mamelodi Sundowns to win a seven-goal thriller. Fluminense rallied in the second half to beat Ulsan 4-2 and knock out the South Korean side while Monterrey and River Plate ended goalless. At Lumen Field in Seattle, Ryoma Watanabe got an early opening goal for Urawa Reds, who were backed by a noisy contingent of their supporters. But captain Lautaro Martinez — who got Inter's equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Monterrey of Mexico in their opening game — repeated the trick to level matters with a clever overhead kick 12 minutes from time. Valentin Carboni was then the unlikely hero as he grabbed the winner two minutes into injury time. The 20-year-old Argentine had not played a competitive game since early October after suffering a serious knee injury while on loan at Marseille. Borussia Dortmund's Serhou Guirassy scores their second goal. — Reuters Carboni had not made an appearance for Inter in over two years, but he was on to hand to sidefoot home when the ball fell to him in the area. "Our opponents play with their hearts and to counter that as a team we need to play with more pride, be humble and know how to suffer," Martinez told broadcaster DAZN. The result left some Urawa fans in tears and Inter level on four points with River Plate with the two teams meeting next. River Plate were let down by their finishing in a scrappy, foul-ridden encounter with Mexico's Monterrey, who sit on two points. Esteban Andrada, Monterrey's Argentine keeper, made a series of saves while River's forwards were unable to put away the few chances that came their way. Monterrey could still make it into the last 16 if they beat Urawa and River or Inter win their game. Fluminense's Juan Freytes celebrates scoring their third goal. — Reuters BELLINGHAM STRIKES Earlier Jobe Bellingham got his first goal for Dortmund as his new club overcame stifling heat in Cincinnati to beat Sundowns 4-3 and move to four points from two matches in Group F. The South African champions had taken a surprise early lead through a fine solo goal from Lucas Ribeiro. However, Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams handed Dortmund their equaliser on a plate, passing the ball straight to Felix Nmecha, who stroked home. Serhou Guirassy gave Dortmund the lead with his 35th goal since the beginning of the season. English midfielder Bellingham, who this month followed older brother Jude's footsteps in joining the German side from Sunderland, started for the first time for Dortmund and made it 3-1 just before the break. Khuliso Mudau's own goal made it 4-1 before the hour mark, but Sundowns salvaged some pride by reducing the deficit through Iqraam Rayners and Lebo Mothiba. "I'm sweating like I've just come out of a sauna," said Dortmund coach Niko Kovac when asked about the conditions in a game which started at midday local time. River Plate's Facundo Colidio in action. — Reuters "It was tough going for both teams, but the opposition are used to it. We certainly didn't give our best performance, but that wasn't possible today." Sundowns will still go into their final game in Group F with a chance of qualifying for the last 16. "The boys made a wonderful performance... it was a hell of a match. I'm not happy but very proud," said their Portuguese coach, Miguel Cardoso. South Korea's Ulsan gave Fluminense a real scare in their Group F clash at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, leading 2-1 until the 66th minute before the Brazilians ran out 4-2 winners, eliminating the K-League champions in the process. Colombian striker Jhon Arias put Fluminense ahead with a 27th minute free-kick but goals from Lee Jin-hyun and Um Won-sang gave Ulsan the advantage at the break. Nonata levelled for the Brazilians in the 66th minute before Juan Freytes put Fluminense ahead in the 83rd minute, slotting home after a scramble in the box. Keno added a fourth in stoppage time to leave Fluminense on top of the group, level on 4 points with Borussia Dortmund ahead of their final game against South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns in Miami on Wednesday. A win or draw for the Rio club in their final group game will ensure their passage into the last 16. — AFP

Sergio Ramos gives Inter a scare in Club World Cup stalemate

PASADENA, United States: The 39-year-old Spanish great Sergio Ramos scored as Monterrey held Inter Milan 1-1 in a hard-fought Fifa Club World Cup (CWC) Group E opener in Pasadena on Tuesday. Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez scored a well-worked equaliser to cancel out Ramos's opener for the Mexican side in front of 40,311 fans at the Rose Bowl. Inter, playing their first game since being thrashed 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, were left ruing their failure to turn their dominance of possession and territory into goals. But the draw was a boost for Ramos and Monterrey, who face Argentina's River Plate in their next game on Saturday. "When you don't get all three points you're never entirely happy," Ramos, the former Spain and Real Madrid defender, said. "But one point is better than no point. "They were a tough opponent and have just played in the final of the Champions League. We were a little bit nervous but in the second half we stayed organised and kept the ball better. "Now we need to think about the next game." Inter coach Cristian Chivu said his team had struggled to break down a Monterrey team who sat deep for long periods. "We played well in the first half even though we went behind," Chivu said. "We could have attacked better in the second half. It's not easy to play against a very low block." Chivu, in his first match in charge after the departure of Simone Inzaghi, denied the Champions League finalists had underestimated the Mexicans. "We respect every team we play and we knew what kind of team they were, we tried to do our best," he said. "Sometimes you get the best out of it, sometimes you don't. We created a lot of chances. Football's not won on paper." ALL INTER The Italians were in complete control almost from the kick-off, Benjamin Pavard the first to threaten with an eighth-minute shot that flew over the bar. Matteo Darmian should have done better in the 22nd minute but shot over after clever work down the left from Nicolo Barella. Yet despite the early onslaught, Inter were rocked in the 25th minute when Monterrey scored from one of their few forays into the Italians' half. Midfielder Oliver Torres swung a corner in from the right and Ramos — who had lost Francesco Acerbi on the edge of the six-yard box — steered his header into the bottom corner. Inter were soon back on the offensive and only a point-blank save by Monterrey goalkeeper Esteban Andrada from Sebastiano Esposito prevented an equaliser. Martinez also went close after 36 minutes, and Inter had a strong penalty appeal when Pavard's header struck Ramos on the arm inside the area. VAR found in favor of Ramos and Monterrey escaped. Three minutes later Inter drew level with a wonderfully worked free-kick routine. Albanian international Kristjan Asllani shaped to shoot from 25 yards out but instead flighted a delicate chip behind the Monterrey defence. Brazilian international Carlos Augusto timed his run to perfection and squared into the path of Martinez, who tapped in for 1-1. Monterrey almost regained the lead against the run of play on 64 minutes, Sergio Canales unleashing a low shot that cannoned off the post. Inter had a Martinez goal ruled out for offside moments later as the Italians continued to threaten. But it was Monterrey who came closest to grabbing a winner in stoppage time when Colombian midfielder Nelson Deossa got behind the Inter defence but could only shoot into the side netting. — AFP CLUB WORLD CUP RESULTS: Group E In Seattle River Plate (ARG) 3 (Colidio 12, Driussi 48, Meza 73) Urawa Red Diamonds (JPN) 1 (Matsuo 58-pen) Group F In East Rutherford Fluminense (BRA) 0 Borussia Dortmund (GER) 0 In Orlando Ulsan HD (KOR) 0 Mamelodi Sundowns (RSA) 1 (Rayners 36) Group E In Pasadena Monterrey (MEX) 1 (Ramos 25) Inter Milan (ITA) 1 (Martinez 42)

US, Saudi, Costa Rica and Mexico win in CONCACAF

LOS ANGELES, United States: The United States ended their four-match losing run with a resounding 5-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in their opening game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Sunday in San Jose. Mauricio Pochettino and his team, which is missing several Europe-based regulars, had faced plenty of criticism after recent friendly defeats to Turkey and Switzerland. In desperate need of a change in mood around the team, a year out from the World Cup they will co-host with Canada and Mexico, Pochettino fielded an attacking line-up. Against a Trinidad team, coached by former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke, it proved to be just the kind of stress-free comfortable win that the Argentine coach was seeking. The USA were on top from the outset with two early chances for striker Patrick Agyemang and it was the striker who helped create the 16th-minute opener. Agyemang won the ball off Trinidad defender Alvin Jones, found Jack McGlynn on the right who kept his cool and clipped the ball to the back post where Malik Tillman collected and then slotted home. It was a tough day for Jones, who then gifted the USA their second goal with a back-pass that went straight to winger Diego Luna who broke away and then unselfishly squared to Tillman for the PSV Eindhoven midfielder's second. Trinidad were showing why they have fallen down the FIFA rankings, slipping to 100th and fourth in the Caribbean, below Curacao, lacking any kind of solidity. The lively Luna created the third, a minute before the break, when he cut in from the left and his low shot deflected off Agyemang and beat the helpless Marin Phillip. It was easy going for Pochettino's side in the second half with Trinidad managing to threaten once when Tyrese Spicer put a low ball across the face of the goal but the sliding Dante Sealy was unable to connect. With the game fizzling out, Pochettino made a triple substitution and that added some late urgency to his side's attack. Sub Brenden Aaronson cut in from left and squeezed a low shot past Phillip's near post and then another man off the bench, Haji Wright completed the convincing victory when he broke down the left and drifted inside before placing the ball in the far corner. The USA, looking for an eighth Gold Cup title, face Saudi Arabia and Haiti in their remaining two games in Group D. SAUDI ARABIA WIN OVER HAITI Saleh Al Shehri's penalty kick in the 21st minute held up as the winner as Saudi Arabia shut out Haiti 1-0 in CONCACAF Gold Cup Group A, play on Sunday night in San Diego. Al Shehri drew a foul in the penalty area on Frantzdy Pierrot in the 18th minute, then converted a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner to lift Saudi Arabia (1-0-0, 3 points) in the opener for both teams. Haiti had an opportunity to pull even in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time, but Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Nawaf Al Aqidi (four saves) denied Dany Jean in the center of the goal on a right-footed shot from outside the box. Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide finished with three saves. MEXICO DOWN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC Edson Alvarez registered a goal and an assist to help Mexico post a 3-2 victory over the Dominican Republic in CONCACAF Gold Cup Group A, play on Saturday night in Inglewood, Calif. Peter Gonzalez and Edison Azcona scored goals for the Dominican Republic. Mexico struck in the 44th minute when Orbelin Pineda sent a cross to Alvarez, who sent a header into the net. Mexico made it 2-0 in the second minute of the second half when Jimenez scored on a right-footed shot. The Dominican Republic got on the board in the 51st minute when Gonzalez sent a left-footer into the net. Two minutes later, Mexico countered on a corner kick taken by Alexis Vega. Alvarez headed the ball, and it glanced off Montes' head and went into the net. The Dominican Republic tallied again when Azcona's right-footed shot caromed off a defender to cut its deficit to one. COSTA RICA SINK SURINAME Costa Rica upended Suriname 4-3 with a penalty-kick goal in the 13th minute of stoppage time in CONCACAF Gold Cup Group A, play on Sunday night in San Diego. Capitalising on a foul in the penalty area by Suriname's Dion Malone, Manfred Ugalde converted the winner on a right-footed shot to the bottom right corner. It was Ugalde's second penalty-kick goal of the game after he scored in the 19th minute to give Costa Rica 3 points. — AFP
