ED searches on educational institutions linked to Parameshwara leads to political storm

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday launched searches at 16 locations in connection with the gold smuggling case allegedly involving Kannada actor Ranya Rao. Some of them are premises of educational institutions reportedly linked to Karnataka's Home Minister G. Parameshwara.
However, sources in the ED did not name any individuals. 'An educational Trust has diverted funds and made a payment of ₹40 lakh towards the credit card bill of Ranya Rao, allegedly on the instructions of an influential individual. No supporting vouchers or documentation were found to substantiate this payment,' an official said, refusing to name any individual.
'Targeted attack'
Meanwhile, the searches at the institutions linked to the Home Minister led to a political storm, with many Congress leaders alleging that it was targeted attack on a senior Dalit leader of the party.

Similar reactions came from other senior leaders, including Jairam Ramesh and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
Illegal foreign exchange
ED sources, meanwhile, speaking on the general nature of searches at 16 locations carried out on Wednesday, said that they included those of 'hawala' operators who 'facilitated illegal foreign exchange movement for gold procurement.'
'Several such persons have admitted to dealings with Ranya Rao,' said an official, adding that the buyers conceded that they bought gold allegedly from her and sold it to jewellers.
The locations related to 'accommodation entry operators', under suspicion for providing fake proofs of financial transactions and consultation incomes in Ranya Rao's accounts, were also covered. 'They have confessed to routing funds to Ranya Rao's accounts, without any genuine business transactions,' the official said.
It is alleged that one company had purportedly shown Ranya Rao as a supplier of construction labour and paid her 'a few crores of rupees'. She also allegedly indulged in money laundering through other companies.

Bengaluru/Raichur: Law minister HK Patil has written a detailed letter to chief minister Siddaramaiah expressing deep concern over the govt's failure to act on thousands of illegal mining cases that allegedly led to a loss of Rs 1.5 lakh crore between 2007 and 2011. In a seven-page letter dated June 18, Patil criticised the "administrative apathy" in handling these cases and called for stern action against the culprits and recovery of lost public wealth. He reminded Siddaramaiah of the 320-km foot march to Ballari in 2010 against illegal mining when the Congress was in opposition. Patil, who headed the cabinet sub-committee on illegal mining during Siddaramaiah's previous term (2013–18), noted in the letter that only 7.6% of more than 12,000 registered illegal mining cases have been investigated so far. "In just 2 per cent of these seven per cent, which means in only 0.2 per cent of the total number of cases, verdicts have come and cases have seen a conclusion," he further added. In Raichur, Patil on Saturday said, "I have brought it to the notice of the CM about what has to be done. The letter is written in the interest of the state and its people. The chief minister has seen the letter and has taken the matter seriously." Ambulance Driver Harasses Nurse, Drags Her By Hair At UP Hospital: Cops

Bhadohi: A 22-year-old nurse was molested, beaten up and dragged by hair by an ambulance driver at a private hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi, police said on Saturday. A case has been registered against the driver, identified as Rohit alias Mohit, who is on the run, they said. On June 5, the nurse was on a call when Rohit came to her and started molesting her. When she protested, he grabbed her by her hair, started beating her, and threw her on the ground, Kotwali SHO Sachidanand Pandey said. The accused also harassed the nurse by putting his hand inside her clothes and doing obscene acts, he said. On hearing the nurse's screams, doctors and other people present at the hospital came and saved her. They scolded Rohit and sent him away, the SHO said. Rohit regularly comes to that hospital with patients, the SHO said, adding that efforts are on to arrest Rohit. A case has been registered against him under sections 76 (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) of the BNS. According to police sources, both the nurse and the accused belong to the Dalit community.
