Alexander Straus to become Angel City head coach at end of May
Bayern Munich's Alexander Straus will become the next head coach of the National Women's Soccer League side (NWSL) Angel City, sources with knowledge of the deal have told The Athletic.
Straus' Bayern exit was confirmed by the German team on Thursday morning, with the Norwegian to remain in charge until the end of May. A Bayern statement said the decision to part ways 11 months into the two-year extension Straus signed last year was at his request 'to pursue a new challenge.' Bayern players were told on Wednesday and the squad was moved by his departure.

Angel City fired previous head coach Becki Tweed in December and subsequently conducted an extensive search for her replacement. Sam Laity has been serving as interim head coach since Tweed's departure.
The club's sporting director Mark Parsons said on The Athletic's Full Time with Meg Linehan podcast in February that the search had been narrowed down to four candidates in what had been a 'very detailed and thorough process.'
Angel City declined to comment when approached.
Straus was hired as Bayern head coach in 2022 and led the team to back-to-back Frauen-Bundesliga titles in 2022-23 and 23-24.
Before joining Bayern, the 49-year-old coached SK Brann in the top flight of his native Norway, winning the league twice.
Bayern are currently on course to win a third straight league title and are eight points clear of second-placed Wolfsburg. They have three league games remaining this season and can win the title if they beat Freiburg at home on Sunday.
Angel City have enjoyed an undefeated start to the 2025 NWSL season and are fourth in the standings after two wins and two draws. The club played its inaugural season in 2022 and made the playoffs the following year, before finishing 12th and missing the postseason in 2024, which saw Tweed leave her role.
Parsons has overseen the coaching hiring process since he joined Angel City in December as the club's sporting director following the departure of general manager Angela Hucles. Hucles parted ways with the club in December, two months after the NWSL sanctioned the organization for salary cap violations earlier last season. That included a $200,000 fine and a three-point deduction from its 2024 standings for violations of league rules in the 2023 season that resulted in Angel City exceeding the salary cap in 2024.
Hucles, along with club president Julie Uhrman, were suspended from all player transaction duties through the end of 2024.

Why did Jonathan Tah choose Bayern Munich? Let him tell you
Jonathan Tah's move from Bayer Leverkusen was a long time coming, but for the Germany international, it was an easy decision. 'I wanted to move and ultimately chose FC Bayern because I feel I can take another step here. I'm very ambitious; I want to keep getting better. With this successful, big club, with the current team that FC Bayern already has, and with coach Vincent Kompany, who wanted me and was a defender himself, I can get even more out of myself at FC Bayern. That's why I'm in Munich,' Tah told Sport Bild journalists Tobi Altschäffl and Heiko Niedderer (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). 'And for me personally, titles are of course important: I've developed a taste for it in Leverkusen and want more – at the DFB and at my new club.' Advertisement Tah seems to be making a smooth transition. If he can continue his solid play, he could even win over some of his Bayern Munich fanbase detractors. Looking for more thoughts and analysis of the dead end that Bayern Munich has seemingly hit with both PSG's Bradley Barcola and Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams? Kovac and Kobel critical despite Dortmund win
Borussia Dortmund picked up their first win of the Club World Cup on Saturday, narrowly defeating South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns 4-3 in a tense contest in Cincinnati. Although the Bundesliga side took all three points, the mood post-match was far from celebratory. Advertisement Head coach Niko Kovac and his players admitted the performance left much to be desired, with soaring temperatures also playing a role. 'I'm sweating like I've just come out of a sauna," said Kovac in an interview with DAZN. 'It was tough going for both teams, but the opposition are used to it. We certainly didn't give our best performance, but that wasn't possible today. There were too many simple mistakes and things definitely didn't run smoothly. The important thing was that we won the game. Nothing else matters.' Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel did not hide his frustration after conceding three goals. "We can't concede three goals, especially not like that. On the positive side, we scored four goals. But apart from that, there isn't much to say. Our positioning wasn't great. It was similar to the first game: we spent too much time ball watching. We didn't create enough options. Whoever had the ball usually had a hard time. We put ourselves in a difficult position. Of course, it's easier when it's 15 degrees and drizzling. But football is also played in the summer. That's part of the game. We have to be able to deal with that.'

Exclusive: Xhaka pushing for Milan move as Leverkusen resist
Granit Xhaka wants Milan with all his heart—he sees it as a bus he can't afford to miss at this stage of his career, especially as he's no longer a youngster. Bayer Leverkusen's hesitations, having already dismantled the squad by letting go of their most sought-after talents, stem from the fact that selling the midfielder would be another heavy blow to their outlook. But Xhaka has made his choice and doesn't intend to go back. LEVERKUSEN, GERMANY – APRIL 12: Granit Xhaka of Bayer 04 Leverkusen is seen during the Bundesliga match between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and 1.
